The Oregon Trail is an educational computer game that involved the player traveling from Independence, Missouri to the WIllamette Valley in Oregon. It was designed as a simulation of the journey of 19th century pioneers. The user plays the role of wagon leader, and buys food and supplies for his party. At the start of the game, players can choose a profession for their leader, each with its own unique bonuses (Banker has extra money, Farmer is better with food supplies, etc.). Along the way, party members can also contract diseases such as malaria or dysentery, and the player can choose to rest in frontier towns or take a chance and keep going. There are also rivers that the player must decide how to get across: paying a native for various services, or fording the river yourself. There was also a hunting minigame, where the player used ammo to hunt for meat.
When the player's surviving party members reach their final destination at Willamette Valley, points are tallied up based on the health of remaining party members, cash on hand, time, and chosen profession.
