15 Minutes of Story
So, I've been a fan of Blendo Game's stuff in the past. I have put an absurd amount of hours into Atom Zombie Smash, and enjoyed my time in Flotilla. I more recently discovered that another Blendo Game, Gravity Bone, was available on free from the studio's website, and after playing it, decided to throw down the $5 to play Thirty Flights of Loving.
I'm not sure it was worth it.
First thing's first: 30 Flights is really short. I played through the game once normally and again with "developer commentary" on, and it took just a bit over a half hour combined. I know it shouldn't be a factor, but as someone with a small amount of free money, I have to think about time value. While I had fun with 30 Flights, I'm not sure I had $5 worth of fun.
That said, 30 Flights is fun. It isn't a game, really...more of a short story told from a first person view. It's a pretty wild ride, shifting from quiet moments to in-your-face intense moments with jarring smash cuts that fit the tone of the game well.
If you are curious about the game, I'd recommend giving Gravity Bone a spin first, which is available free at the Blendo Games site. If you like it, go ahead and play 30 Flights...but I'd recommend waiting for a sale. Even if I enjoyed it, $5 for 15 minutes is a hard sale.
