@steelknight2000@jagubrah@ohnooh: Left foot braking is a technique that front-wheel drive drivers can use, a lot of times, to help drag the car around a corner while keeping understeer at bay by controlling the weight shift while keeping revs up. I'm not sure I understand the physics behind it, myself, having only read about it and seen some videos..

It gets pretty complicated when you've got a standard. You've got to manage heel-toe and left foot braking. But it can get you around corners faster.

I'm not sure if it helps with rear wheel drive cars?

@drewbert I know it's a huge time sink, and it can get super exhausting, but I would totally be down for you guys to do more full race features with different titles. This was so much fun to watch.

You know...iRacing has a driver swap feature now. :D

@oddparticle: Do you mean left-foot breaking specifically in clutchless-vehicles like an F1 car? I know about left-foot breaking in an auto, and right-foot heel-toe in a manual, but I've never heard of left-foot heel-toe in a manual. Which is what Danny seemed to be describing?

EDIT: By "clutchless-vehicles" I mean a vehicle with a semi-manual transmission, i.e. manual gear selectors, but an automated-clutch.

@jagubrah:I think he was just referring to using two feet in a manual vs single in an auto. So he felt more comfortable using his left foot here. That's not to say left foot braking is bad in a manual, it has it's uses though not so much on the road.

I'd like it if F1 didn't suck so much these days, it was really excited a few years ago with the new tyres going off. We had a few close years (despite Vettel winning) but then everyone kept crying about the tyres even though they delivered a better closer F1. Now we have boring tyres that last and crap engines making it Formula Merc.

The Fanatec Clubsport V2 (I think it is) is the Wheel you'd want to get that's still at acceptable consumer prices.

Is it just me, or is this video stuttering every 7th of a second?

I don't notice stuttering, but for me there are odd flashes of pixelation every few minutes. Seems like encoding errors.

Yeah, the entire image exploding into some 1998 MPEG-4 keyframe nightmare has happened regularly in most GBWest videos since E3. They must have changed something about the setup. :/

Yeah, this video seems like it was recorded several days ago, so before whatever fix they've implemented. The Smite quick look was unaffected by these glitches as far as I could tell.

This was great! Has me really excited to pick this game up when it releases next week

I'll also add my name to the list of people who would love for this to become a more regular feature, even half or 3/4 of a race would probably be long enough to do the trick

This was a lot of fun. I'm only just getting into racing (thanks to Alt+F1) this was still really cool to watch and had me on the edge of my seat a few times. It gave me a greater appreciation for each aspect of the race that you guys talk so much about and not just who's coming in first. I've been trying to understand it and this helped a lot.

Hopefully you guys can do this again in the future, it was great fun.

This was pretty badass. No idea why whoever was running the stream decided to shrink the game window down so we could see multiple shots of Danny and Drew. That sucked compared to the headshots overlaying the full screen game view.

Hope you two decide to do more of these!

Well in regular cars downshifting actually helps you break. At least that's how I was tought to drive. Of course you don't want to use it in a high speed situation more like, when youre already stopping for a traffic like and rolling towards it.

I'm not sure if it helps with rear wheel drive cars?

What you're describing in the first sentence is trail braking, and It's actually really simple. Transferring weight to the front wheels reduces understeer (read: going too fast to turn at the rate you desire) in the same fashion that the front wings on an F1 car allow it to steer better at high speeds. Forcing the front tires into the road = better grip = better steering.

Dirt Rally's FWD cars are a ton of fun when you master this (especially in the snow and ice of Monaco!). There's no real need (or there shouldn't be) to do it in a RWD car because those naturally oversteer instead of understeer due to the way power hits the road. 4WD cars should be balanced to the point where you don't need to do it, but depending on your driving style you may tune the car to produce more understeer instead of oversteer and start trail braking more, especially on tarmac where oversteer is less powerslide and more power wasting drift.

Left-foot braking is normal in race cars; nowadays most of them don't use a clutch except for starts. It's easier once you get used to it because you have twice the amount of input control.

Here's a video about it from the site called SAFEisFAST, where they have a bunch of videos aimed at kids who are trying to become racing drivers (interviews with mostly IndyCar drivers); kind of interesting because you can learn from it as a sim racer too:

Loading Video...

You can left-foot brake even when you do need to use a clutch, too; here's a rally driver using his left foot when he doesn't have to downshift and his right foot when he does:

Loading Video...

Also, if you like this type of video I'd recommend checking out some people doing iRacing on Twitch. It's like this but about 10x more intense because it's other human beings and you can't rewind :)
