Re: the removal of split-screen & the load it makes for rendering.

Yes, games have to come out and can't cost infinite money to develop but really a modern 3D game has to have a highly developed LoD system to cull/swap out polygons when they get too small (otherwise you're telling the GPU to render polygons that are sub-pixel scale with the detail levels of modern models). So setting the LoD distances differently can mean two half-screens (which, in terms of pixel shader load on the final output are identical load as the pixel count of the screen doesn't change - it can actually go down if you've got black bars to stop the aspect ration being so extreme or put in a map/permanent time counters/UI in the blank zones to free up the HUD area) with very similar performance load to the single view.

And, that's only true for consoles. I'm betting F1 does reasonably well on PC (because Europe) and there the only thing you need to render more is a better PC. "Split-screen requires at least an i5 CPU and a GTX750Ti or better" isn't a great way to do it but F1 2015 minimum specs is a GTS450. This game, to allow it to run on a range of configurations, has more GPU scaling than even the LoD stuff discussed above. And that's all available to the devs to make split-screen totally work for PC. It's not free but it's also not an art pipeline or even most of the render tech issue. The art pipeline is already making all the stuff you want to build a slightly lower detail split-screen view.

Agreed, they sound pretty cool at low revs. What this video doesnt show is that its really low soundlevel (pretty much wouldnt be able to hear anything 100m away) and apart from the first few seconds in the start they will all just have the same low tinnitus whine the rest of the race.
