brad is actually not terrible at spelunky

He has plenty to learn about the overall game and elements of survival, but overall he is ok.

Posted by acev

the music in pc spelunky is pretty good too, just throwing that out there

Posted by m2cks

Not gonna lie, when he got to the bees my heart rate shot up. Fucking hate bees- just in general. Ugh.

Posted by smitty86

I just have to say.....this week's content has just been really, really outstanding work. The bar for 2013 has been placed very high to start.

Posted by Caliginous

Watching Brad play this was awesome. I hope he eventually beats it on the live stream, #teambrad 2013.

Posted by Puzzler20

I love that at the beginning Vinny was Sidetalking

Posted by megalowho

Thanks for all the crazy live content this week. 2013 gonna be that year

Posted by musclerider

Immediately after watching this I booted up Spelunky and managed to get this achievement after 6-8 tries even though I've never beaten the game before. Then again I might've had the luckiest playthrough of all time since I went into the final boss with the cape, spike shoes, jump shoes, climbing gloves, a parachute, sticky bombs, the shotgun, 15 bombs , and 20 ropes.

Next time on Breaking Brad: FTL

You know you want it Brad! Come get it!

Posted by Dizzyhippos

Will they please put this out on steam already

Posted by VikG

Thanks Guys!

@Abendlaender: FTL would be really fun to watch, just with all the random stuff that could happen with advice from co-pilots Vinny & Drew

2013 is already looking good :)

I love Spelunky! That, and Rick Dangerous....

Man brad is pretty bad at spelunky :L

Posted by Robaota

I should buy this game right?

I don't know much about this game and it certainly seems to be quite hard. But with that attitude of Brad, basically only paying little attention, he won't make it anytime soon.

Posted by Roy42

I'd enjoy watching a full video with Chris on the couch to offer advice.

Posted by NoelVeiga

I may get some crap for this, but this BB exposed why I don't like Spelunky much very starkly. Brad didn't get any better at it over time, he got more info about the game in the last 10 minutes just talking about it than seemingly in his whole experience playing the game and random crap killed him a bunch of times while he was doing not much different from what had kept him alive until then.

The time limit for the ghost is also detracting from exploration and the time for a retry (and the randomization) mean that methodically exploring is annoying and inconsistent. It has none of the reliable results and strategies in FTL or Binding of Isaac AND none of the quick restarting and checkpointing from Super Meat Boy.

It's not a terrible game by any means, but it's just not as gripping as FTL, Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy, Legend of Grimrock, XCOM, Dark Souls or any of the other games that played around with persistence and randomization these last couple of years.

Posted by Bollard

It took Brad 9 minutes to get to the Jungle, he's clearly never getting this achievement.

Posted by NaDannMaGoGo

@NoelVeiga:

In my opinion FTL is the fricking worst at this. I mean how much more annoying does it get than "whoops, so this event caused me to lose a crew member instead of gaining one early on - time to restart!"

Posted by mangopup

@NoelVeiga: Agreed. Complete randomization with no constant means that any strategy gets thrown out the window leaving you with nothing but relying on reactions and luck.

You mean someone hasn't? They must not even be human.

Yeeeah, you're not wrong, that happens in FTL a bunch. At the same time, that's not a catastrophic issue in FTL. Your run is wrecked not because of the random events, it's only cut short if you get cocky and attack a ship you can't beat because your damage output is less than their ability to block your damage and not the other way around. You can figure out at least what you're striving for. A Kestrel run with all guns? All missiles? Focus on your shields and hope nobody shows up with a ton of ion cannons? That's strategizing that works recurringly, despite you getting the gear you're looking for or not.

But sure, you're not wrong. If they surfaced at least a percentage or a text string saying "it could be a trap" versus "it's very likely to be a trap" it'd probably be better.

Also, I can see an FTL 2 having a ton of improvements on that front and others, from 3D graphics to more events, visual customization, additional mechanics on each of the events and so on to make it more skill based without losing the randomization. Spelunky is... well, Spelunky, it's probably the best version of itself already, unless they change the core structure of it.

This was great. I hope there's a follow up.

But how about trying to finish without shortcuts or something first? That's something that could actually happen.

Spelunky is the perfect trial by fire for such a segment. Part 2 makes sense. #TeamBrad

Posted by tehrevel

Brad got so very close to getting through the jungle about halfway through this. If he'd not panicked or just jumped into the bee nest instead of going around (a reasonable thing to do in most cases but the queen bee had floated over to that part making the nest ironically safer) he probably would have been fine. The bees (even the queen) are pretty easy with a boomerang or even a well timed bomb and then you get a load of health. If he'd managed that he'd have gotten into the ice level with the climbing gloves and a cape, lots of health, ropes and bombs and probably would have done pretty well. Then he'd die in a second in the last non secret world because that place is harsh but still. Glad Brad stopped playing before that guy managed to explain the key run, finding out what that was would probably be very demoralizing.

I think his main problem is not using bombs/ropes, there are lots of times when he has 4 of each and does some risky move to get somewhere instead of just using one. Hopefully he figures out that ropes can trigger arrow traps since those are his main time waster/cause of death, throwing stuff is better but sometimes there just isn't anything to throw and dropping a rope to trigger one is better than losing two health.

Love this game. Love Breaking Brad segments. This is gonna be amazing.

Edited by SatelliteOfLove

It's the panic that does him in. It's where it gets funnier, too.

Posted by SirDancelot

@Robaota: Yes. If you enjoy some punishing gameplay with tight controls, it is a very rewarding game. I've poured hours into it and gotten to the last boss, but still have yet to beat the game.

I imagine Vinny as a kid was exactly the same as Vinny now but shorter.

Giantbomb bringing it in 2013!! Keep it up.

Posted by Jigenese

How do I keep track of how many human sacrificies I've done? - Seems like a terrible problem to have...

Posted by LucidDreams117

I'm getting a weird sense of deja vu going on here... I seem to remember watching a video last year where brad was trying to do this in the 8 minutes. It was with Jeff. Someone tell me I'm not just making this up.

Posted by Tondo

God damn. Was already gotten over my Spelunky addiction but this made me go back once again :P

This past week has been one of the best for Giant Bomb videos in a long time. Keep it up guys. What a way to start 2013 !

Posted by Kevin_Cogneto

44:00 is where you went wrong, albeit through no fault of your own. If you'd known about the black market at the time, you could've used the Wadjet eye to get to the black market, and you had plenty of money to buy stuff -- you could've bought the Ankh, which is really helpful for obvious reasons. Or you could've bought a shotgun and maybe also a cape or a jetpack, either of which would've been a great combo since you already had the climbing gloves. Either way, you would've been in great shape.

In my opinion, getting to that black market is not optional if you want to beat the game with no shortcuts, it is essential. Get there with a decent bankroll and you can really equip yourself for the rest of the game.

Yeah, I've gotten back into the game over the past week or two, and all this Spelunky content is inspiring me to keep playing and beat fucking Olmec.

And agreed, surprisingly awesome content this week, even though half the crew is missing and it's the first week of 2013. See what awesome things can happen when Vinny is in charge? :D

Same here, I've gotten to Olmec about a half-dozen times, and haven't won yet. I actually beat him once...but was stuck in a pit with no ropes or any way to get out, and couldn't get to the exit door. That was a bummer, to say the least. But hey, now I know! I suppose that's what Spelunky is all about, learning something new every time you fuck up.

Hmm, turns out Meat Boy does exist here.  And damn, he's creepy.

I thought of trying to run through this, then I realized how savage the true ending is to get.  Jet packing around shooting a flaming head while avoiding spikes, vampire bats, and falling debris?  Yeah...

Maybe it's just me and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but it seems like light crew + Vinny always puts out better content than having all the normal crew around...

Man, that image of Vinny holding the laptop up to talk to it is too funny.

Any hope I had of beating that game just immediately evaporated. Unreal. I can't even get past the temple stuff.

Keep in mind, this YouTube video is the secret hard ending, not the regular one. The regular ending is difficult but doable, and the achievement Brad is going for is just the regular ending. The Hell and Back achievement for beating the secret ending is something different.

Breaking Brad wooo!!!!

Having no Jeff or Ryan is really making for some AWESOME content.

I think I need to buy this game

Posted by golguin

I say more Spelunky Breaking Brad content. I would also like to see some Dark Souls type of Breaking Brad thing with Patrick since he enjoyed ZombiU.

Posted by Hawkerace

I'd play spelunky if there was a 1980's level.
