Why are they revealing this now? It is so long until fall :( AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

As much as I'd wish to be excited, considering I liked Alpha Centuri plenty, I'm still barely more than slightly interested. Maybe the intervening years have just set in the jadedness, but all I'm imagining thus far is something that could just be a Civ 5 mod/expansion.

We admittedly don't know much yet, even with the interview, but I'm not convinced of this becoming anything vastly different or complex in the ways I'd like. Replacing ACs unit construction with what sounds like a slightly modified Civ 5 unit promotion system for example. And I doubt we'll be seeing ACs dynamic terrain/altitude/weather altering either.

Civ 5 and X-Com were fine games but just significant steps back in complexity and depth. But I guess unfortunately for me, they managed to make more of a push into the mainstream because of that. And that's where the money is. So I'm sure this game will turn out 'alright' again. Just maybe this time can we avoid gutting even more of the complexity and then selling it back in expansions?

And thus do I bid "fare-thee-well" to any free time I have once this comes out.

I really liked Alpha Centari, but what I really loved was the very diffrent and very OP alien races in Alien crossfire. I loved how they basicly hacked the game to get a civ to start on water or got 2 Civs to have compleatly diffrent playstyles then the other 12 civs

I loved Alpha Centauri, but in a lot of ways it was a very different game from Civ. Vehicle/ship customization, much more water options, factions with defined viewpoints, an overarching plot, neutral aliens that played an actual role in the story and game.

I'd be curious how many of those departures they keep up with, if any, or if this is just going to be Civilization in space. Though either a new Alpha Centauri or just space mod for Civilization sounds great to me.

Has Alpha Centauri aged well? It's one of those games I've always wanted to play but never got around to doing.

@pkmango7: Its ugly but it still plays great. I pull it out about once a year.

It has a couple of holdovers from Civilization II that you'll find anachronistic if you're used to the newer Civ games, but it absolutely holds up.

I have never played Alpha Centauri, hop onto the civ train with Civ V, after some months I was wondering about a Civ game in space. Endless Space came out, was cool for a while, but I never stuck with it. This is exciting.

Also...is the XCOM squad going to be the starting unit, that's the logical step right?

It's going to be hard to get into if you're not familiar with games from that era, but most people believe that it's aged very well. If you're interested, I'd recommend watching a Let's Play first. I believe GoG has it.

SCIENCE VICTORY

This trailer made me almost cry.

I know Alpha Centauri immediately comes to mind but the pitch for this game sounds a lot more like that old Sierra game Outpost. Especially that initial choice where how you outfit your ship and where you aim it at determines the planet you land on. Color me super excited, I always thought that was missing from space 4X games

I'm going to play a game of civ 5, win a science victory, then use what happened in that game for my decisions I make for a Beyond Earth campaign...

Hey guys, I think this will be pretty cool. I mean, I'm no "game reviewer" or whatever, and this is a pre-rendered trailer, but hey- these are the guys. I bet this game will be fantastic. You have not failed me yet Firaxis, so I'm gonna say it's a safe bet.

I just hope they change some of the stuff from Civ V and bring it back closer to Civ IV.

Why are people surprised by this? It's been done before in civ, most recently with iv. The hex's give it away as a v expansion.

This seems totally like an unofficial Alpha Centauri 2! :-D (Which they can't call it because of rights but I still think this secretly is)

@uberjannie: Be thrilled it's only six months! Most games that are not yearly, CoD/AC, are revealed YEARS in advance! :)

@bigd145: No you are wrong. They use hexes now, period. It's not a V expansion - they have already said this is a brand new stand alone game.

If anything it's unlikely that Civ VI will be seen for a great number of years as this is basically the next major release Civ game.

What do you mean the hexes give away it´s a V expansion? This is a stand-alone game. The use of hexes hardly says it must be an expansion for V just because that game used them. That doesn't make much sense.
