FPS boss fights always look pretty dumb. He's 60 feet tall, why is he putting down a spark that is the key to killing him, why is he opening his chest etc etc etc.

Okay, sure, but why does the giant monster in an action game lean in close so that you can stab him in his head.

At a certain point these questions will destroy all video games.

Thanks for explaining that -- I was watching this in the background while I cleaned house, and for the life of me couldn't figure out why they kept talking about "ads".

Is "ads" supposed to be short for "adversaries"? That sounds a bit pretentious -- no one says "we're gonna go fight some adversaries" unless they're trying to be a Tolkien-esque passive-voice copycat (as in, "Forsooth! Let us shooteth these most foul adversaries in their facial areas!"

I propose they call bad guys "ens". For "enemies". Or "efs". For "foes". Or "baggies". For "bad guys".

As they explained it, it stands for added ones. Not enemies that roam around the world or guard a place and once you shoot them they're gone, but enemies that get added during a boss fights. So if you say "Ads!" everyone knows that new enemies spawned and that they need to be shot. It's just a really short way of conveying information which is what people want during 6 player co-op experiences due to a possible overloard of voices.

ALSO, while I'm annoying as hell already, let me continue to be, "adversary" is most definitely a word derived from latin and therefore a word that Tolkien would explicitly NOT use since the world of LotR is set on our earth before Rome. He stated he wanted as few latin words and as many german ones as possible.

So there you go!

Add is probably the least offensive and most useful general MMO/Game term. You can so go much deeper/more obnoxious, 'Proc' seemed to be entering more general use for a while and that was sort of terrible.

When did people stop saying "mobs" or is that something completely different. For me, mobs were always AI fodder or a general term for enemies. I've never heads ADS before I started watching Brad play Destiny, and even when I played Destiny myself and did raids in a group I don't remember anyone ever using the term either.

@humanity: Mob is still used but there's more urgency to calling out an Add phase because otherwise the players might not realize than an entire group of thralls that were not a part of the fight before are now about to swarm over and explode in your face.

It seems to me the term would be more prevalent in Destiny than even in other MMOs because every encounter in Destiny basically has to have an add phase as a means to prevent players from running out of ammo.

The spark isn't his. He doesn't control that. He's opening his chest to kill everyone. Every powerful move has its weakness.

Seems to me your criticism has nothing to do with FPS bosses but just any boss in any game ever. Weaknesses always exist and great game bosses are built around figuring them out and exploiting them.

@zevvion: I think it's much more noticeable in FPS games but yeah, I guess it depends on how well it's masked. This fight looks pretty bad about it.

Thanks for the detailed explanation (even if it DOES make me disappointed that it's not even as remotely complicated as I made it out to be.)

However, I'm pretty sure that, in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, various notable people called Sauron "THE Adversary" as a way of not directly naming him, didn't they? It was a more subtle version of Rowling's "The Big Bad Boss Guy Who is So Scary We Shouldn't Say His Name".

ANYWAY, good for Brad and Jeff for sitting around for 8 hours to play a single mission in Destiny. I suppose this literally equated to "We're not going to do anything but play videogames for work all day." ;)

@humanity: It's "adds", as in additional enemies, not ads. It's specifically for when more mobs come in during a boss fight, usually called an add wave. Used a LOT in WoW, so it bleeds over.

@humanity: In the FFXI community, which is the only MMO I've had real long-term experience with, "adds" are generally used to refer to enemies that accompany a boss or a boss-like encounter. However, "mob" is usually a term used to refer to any monster out in the field. But the term "mob" gets thrown around a lot and is used in many varying situations.

That's insane. I've played WoW for a long time and I've never heard of adds. I really don't care for that word.

A- don't create words that sound like other words, we have enough of that already. I mean, same goes with mobs. Who does that? Why?!

B- do we really need that distinction? I guess it's good to know that they've spawned in a boss fight... I don't know.

C- It sounds dumb. So does mobs though. Loot also sounds dumb. Invent better words that don't sound like 12 year olds made them up. Even though that's probably the case...

I've used the term ever since '00 in EverQuest. If you're in a group fighting stuff, saying "mobs!" could have multiple meanings. If you say "adds!" it means more monsters are about to join the fight and healer/tank should be aware of that fact. As for creating words - shortening words is pretty essential in MMOs where you may need to convey a lot of information, fast. Writing 'additional monsters!' will take longer than just 'adds!'. Though once VoIP became commonly used, I guess it's easier to convey that information - but since those are the established terms since forever, there is no harm in using them there as well.

And you do realize, that the word 'loot' was not made up by people playing RPGs?

@twolines: "adds" means additional enemies that joined the fight as opposed to enemies that were in it from the start - a useful distinction in several scenarios. "mobs" means mobile enemies as opposed to stationary. That's useful to call out, especially if your team is trying to avoid starting a fight or needs to avoid some mob(s) for some other reason.

The point is, the abbreviations are useful and meaningful.

That raid ending is totally a callback to Zone of the Enders 1. I just wish they would have given Oryx same sort of dialogue, that would have been 10/10.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFM6f1tvos0

Oh man I totally forgot about that.

And now I remember how amazing Zone of the Enders 2 was and how we'll probably never get another one.

Thanks Jeff for making yourself sick for our amusement is was amazing watching you get sicker and sicker as the night progressed ... hmm maybe you were Oryx and the team was killing you? I mean you are big boss man for the site I think ... ;)

Anyway wish sometime I could be in a 12 hour figure out how to do this raid but unlikely as I am never up at the top level of an mmo when new raids come out and I enjoy RP to much and single player strategy games (and life outside of video games) to make it happen.

I am not sure if anyone else would find it interesting but I would find watching you figure out a raid interesting the 12 hours everyone went in blind.

Also sad no dialogue or ending movie I mean that was pretty much the end of the game at that point so should have been one ...

Most of these terms, like 'mobs' and 'adds' and such, date back to at least DikuMUD in 1991. We used them in text-based MUDs in the early 90s. Rooms, mobiles (then mobs), and objects were what made up your database core. Also aggro, adds, etc.

I spent most of the 2000s not playing games 'cuz of IRL concerns before getting back into it around 2009. It was really weird to hear basically every game/every gamer using those terms--but it makes sense, since the earliest MMOs were just MUDs with graphics and on a bigger scale, then it evolved from there. But yeah, most of those terms date back to before there even was a Web, even if just to a very nerdy few.

There are legit lore theories on why he's doing all of those things (some are more than just theories). I don't want to get into too much detail, but he essentially wants you to kill him in a specific way to set specific events in motion. So yeah, pretty much everything about that end fight actually makes sense from a lore perspective. The Taken King lore is pretty incredible. If only Bungie let you read the lore in the game...
