E3 2013: Arguably the Best Part of AC3 is the Focus of Assassin's Creed IV

No space whales or fire whales here. Just regular whales. And that's...that's pretty awesome still, actually.

Great choice in music and I am pretty pumped for the setting. Have to admit I haven't played and Assassin's Creed game since Brotherhood and I think I am OK with that decision.

This looks really fun. Aside from the assassinating part. Why do they need that?

This would be better if it were just called Black Flag and they lost the whole Assassins Creed thing

I mean AC1 and Rev were a lot worse than 3, so yeah it could? But I doubt they would leave all of those really underdeveloped elements of 3 so unpolished in this kind of sequel.

I am very interested in the game, but I am not getting my hopes up for it at all. It seems like it's taking all the best features from 3 and making an entire game around that, which is very cool. But, the series has been wearing out its welcome for some time now. They should take a year or two off and come up with something really spectacular.

No way. Assassin's Creed had repetitive, mandatory side missions, but they led to assassination missions that are still some of the best missions in the series. The whole city was after you after those, with bells ringing, guards chasing, and only one place to hide. So intense. And Revelations was boring, really boring, but not terrible.

AC III, on the other hand, was a fucking travesty. It was released months too early, just this broken, buggy mess where everything from game-crashing bugs to bad mission design is getting fixed for months after release. The missions were all terrible, the ending was a disappointment, Desmond's missions were totally underwhelming, Connor was bland, the story was boring, and it just wasn't fun. Again, that's on top of being an unreliable (and that's being generous) piece of software.

I have no faith that AC IV will be any better. AC III killed all trust or goodwill I had to the franchise. Revelations was boring, but AC III was an insult. I paid full price for it. I have never felt more disgruntled with a video game purchase in my life, no exaggeration.

@whatisdelicious: Not to me? It never glitched for me a most of the missions were fun, especially if I didn't give a fuck about the full sync shit. The mechanics in 1 were too clunky and only really 3 of the major assassinations were memorable set pieces(the drink poisoning one, the slave trafficing one, and the assassin lynching) and since the fighting was so bad from a gameplay perspective it still doesn't really hold up for me. Oh yeah and if you fell in the water you died/drowned/had to be respawned on land. I mean, the Desmond missions in III were meaningless 5 minute drivel, and stuff like the underground tunnels seemed to be missing mechanics (like what the hell did they even do?) but the core game of running around and stabbing guys was always good for me.

Maybe because I replayed 2 and Brotherhood right before 3, and 3's just a much faster moving game, like for instance running with Haytham/Connor is just quicker and you can move side-to-side(not really strafing) more rapidly and just straight-up walk-up hidden blade assassinations are much quicker. After playing those two games, I didn't expect as much because my mind was refreshed and kind of saw through to the problems those games have

@dan_citi: Which platform were you on? Maybe it wasn't as bad. I was on PS3 and I was constantly running into glitches, bad frame rate, game-crashing bugs, and broken AI. Like this happened while I was playing. I sent that guy to kill two guards literally four times (I wish I'd recorded the first three attempts) and he could never do it because his AI was just broken.

And I just hated playing as Connor. The guy was bland, didn't care at all about the Assassins' mission or creed, and had all those boring missions as a kid like hide-and-seek that dragged on way too long. Such a bummer when it switched from Haytham to Connor. And Desmond was drivel, yeah, but it was drivel we'd been waiting to play for 5 games. So deflating.

I played on 360, didn't have any memorable bugs. Sometimes things got finicky, but every AC game has. Framerate got iffy a lot, never distracting, only really bad when there were tons and tons of people on screen walking down some wide street in NY, or during that last huge chase scene as Haytham than had the big explosion in it. Then again my only Skyrim glitch was some quests hitching up and I just saved and loaded and it was fine, I don't run into any game breaking or bad glitches in games often, except for Sonic 06 but that game was a travesty. I do remember the mission where the Frechman got drunk and raged through the city being frustrating, mainly because I felt the game didn't give me the tools to really control the mission at least to the point of getting full sync, which I quickly abandoned anyway.

I liked Connor fine is his laid back naivety, and his disconnection from the Assassin brotherhood stood out, but not exactly negatively for me. It sort of represented the blurred lines between the assassins and templars which was a big theme in the game. I think the kid stuff should have been a side mission like those flashback missions in AC:Brotherhood, I enjoyed them for what they were, and I understand they have to ease into Connor's character, but the pacing was really bad. Haytham however was an awesome character to play as and always interesting. It was exciting how much of the game you played as him, Connor was just barely passable with a few moments I guess. I definitely didn't hate him and liked how he saw through bullshit, but could definitely see how someone could be cold on him. Desmond's stuff was so bad (in alll of the games) because it is so mechanically bland and sparse, and fells so foreign and unpolished compared to the rest of the game. Unless they were actually going to make some crazy awesome near future AC game, Desmond was just a wash from the start. I mean, in AC1 the Desmond "gameplay" may as well have been a cutscene or a load screen.

Hopefully pirate guy is more like Haytham.
