I started playing eve 4 months ago and the key to enjoying the game is patience, being in a good corp and a love for internet spaceships.  It will take you a few weeks of playing to start to understand everything and then it is not too intimidating. Make sure you do the tutorial.  Also this is not a single player game. To really get the most out of this game  you need to be in a good corporation either a learning one (Eve University) or a corp that is focused on what you want to do in the game.

I personally suggest joining Eve university (
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Applying_to_Eve_University) their sole purpose is to help new players.  They have their own wiki full of useful information and they also have classes were experienced players help the new players.  *Disclaimer: I am a member of eve uni and they did help me when i first started playing. Also if you apply it will take you about 2 weeks to get into eve uni so do the tutorial while you wait.

I believe it would be a train wreck, and the community would resent it even more than the Matrix people did. Broadcasting what you are doing in EVE is like playing poker with your cards facing out.  GB would become its own clique and the other clans would have nothing to do with them, or try to destroy something every episode.  It wouldn't represent gameplay at all, it would be like a poorly scripted "reality TV" show.

I have actually played a lot of eve and I have to say that my experience was much more boring than this video describes. These sorts of political intrigue type things really don't happen to much in game and would require a lot of personal effort. In my experience most of the game involves you joining a corp that is genuinely supportive of each other and then just doing missions and mining and building and such really boring activities. I suppose there are powerful warlords or whatever but you'll never be one of them nor will you be a powerful trader in my experience. But perhaps I'm just a victim of the noble lie in the eve universe as well idk.

That is 100% the case for every other mmo. At least this one gives you the possibility to do such things.

I cant count how many 3-4 hour long roaming fleets i have been on where absolutely nothing happened. And the fights that did happen on some fleets last minutes out of those 3-4 hours.  But then again Eve Uni likes to "crowd tank" so not many people come out to play.

This actually happened a while back, it was either BOB or Goon Squad that got destroyed because someone disbanded the alliance after letting someone of a rival Corp have his log-in information.  It was an epic day, and a sad day indeed.

I'm tired of EVE.  I'm really close to unsubscribing. I
played it for about 3 months, but it's too time consuming.
If you play other games, EVE gets in the way.  I can't
spend all my time in EVE grinding or depending on
others.

And when somebody blows away your ship & pod kills
you, it's a serious waste of your fucking time & all the
cash you either have to spend to buy your ship & hunt
down all the parts you used with that ship, or even the
plug-ins that were in your body..they're destroyed, you
gotta buy new ones.  Fuckin' pain in the ass.

I wish I had more time to play it.  I change games too
often.

when I played EVE I was quite intrigued, but as others have noted, it is very time consuming and the cool stuff, as awesome as it is, is few and far between. With that said, i still think CCP made something different, unique, and worth observing, if not playing every so often.

I thought Goon Squad was disbanded because their leadership started bitching at each other or something like that? Or was that Goon Fleet? The whole Goon-something thing they have going on is confusing sometimes haha. I don't remember, but that was an epic day indeed.

I'm glad EVE exists, it needs to. I played it for about six months back in 2006 and gave up when I realized I was paying for three months of EVE just to get my mining barge skill to its highest level and use the ship/gear I bought a long-ass time ago. That was ridiculous.

I think it's interesting that they used the 'infiltrate enemy corp' angle when every time that EVE has come onto people's gaming news radars, it's because of stuff like it. It's always been possible in the game, but now they're making an ad for it.

The sad part is that in order to really complete a scenario like that and gain that much trust and skill, you literally need to play for years. 2-3 years at least for the skills alone. EVE Online as a game is a misnomer, it's something you trick into playing like a game, it's not a game on its surface.

Yes, their graphics are amazing, that's not what's wrong with the game by any means.

I would be much more ok with this if they made the basic gameplay more fun instead of generic WoW skills hotbar action. Sure all the systems are unique, but If I was having a ton of fun flying around and in combat I wouldn't care if I didn't change anything :P

Just like in real life only a few people would succeed with that heist. That is the beauty but also the problem with EVE. Unlike other games it doesn't make you feel powerful unless you are powerful. If I wanted a game where a few megacorps make tons of money while the most of us just spend our time doing monotonous mining then I could rather play a game called Real Life. I joined a big alliance once, but after a few days another alliance gobbled up it's territory and trapped me and my stuff far out in unsecure space. I lost 80 % of my assets and it took me weeks of monotonous mining to get back to where I was. That's not fun IMO.

I think that in EVE fiction pilots are encased in a pod filled with some kind of liquid, and that's why they are naked.

Doesn't seem like a really fun way to fly a ship though.

This!
Unless you get in a good corp, then you might have some impact, but in the grand scheme of things, you're still nothing but an insect.

Still hope they make VTES/VTM good tho, cos I'd love me some vampire MMO, might be the only to get me back into MMOs.

@ultimathule: It does when being suspended in a gel that reduces inertial force. Although most of the ships are supposed to be crewed :/

@Axxol: The newest expansion/patch is one step towards "Walking in stations" where avatars will get more customisation and clothes. In station clothes that is, still naked in space though :)

I have the same relationship with this game. I love to hear more about it, but I haven't played a second of it. I tend to like to just hear long-time players tell their stories, even if it sorta makes me sick in the gutti-wuts to think about paying for it myself.

I've spent well over a year playing EVE off and on. While I love the fiction and aesthetic styles, the game is just boring unless you get pretty heavily into PvP and even then, it's kinda boring.
I'd love to see a non-MMO game set in that universe.

People always underestimate how much a new player can do even a a huge battle. If not damage dealing then slowing other ships down and disabling them in other ways. You can  be an asset to a corp in a couple of weeks of play

EVE is constantly evolving. CCP listens to its users and has a special user group called  Council of Stellar Management (aka CSM).  The game we are playing today is only just the beginning. Last few years CCP has redone the whole back end of the game. Now when its all pretty much done they will be launching a new GUI and ability to walk in the space stations (not in that exact order). In other words its a ride you want to catch now because you will miss so much if you don't. I should know, i trailed it in December 2007 to come back in 2010 with my account still alive. Today with the help of tutorials and my corp i have been having a great time in EVE. However i have missed so many free expansion packs that now i have even more things to try and understand. The size of the EVE universe is so huge that it takes at least a month to slowly start taking it in.

EVE is like the golden city of Inca's. Full of treasures but very hard to find. However if you do manage to find it you wont regret it, ever lol. If you do try EVE just remember that everything is in drop down menus. This game was first launched in 2003 so its GUI is not the best. As you play keep a note of the Overview, Your ship controls, and the journal. Overview especially has to be customised as on default will actually hide a lot of information from the user to try and keep things simple.

Also lets not forget the console FPS Dust 514 that's coming out in 2011. With this game you will be able to fight on planet surface while at the same time the capsular will fight in the orbit around it.

EVE an awsome MMO that you only have to buy once. WIth PLEX you can even keep on playing it for free. With constant free expansion packs the game will never stop getting better :D

I have played EVE off and on for a few years and recently quiting for good (probably) not so long ago. I have gone from newbie character in an Ibis i.e Caldari starter ship to the 0.0 alliance political scene.

In my opinion in a lot of ways EVE is a terrible game, however in the other ways it is unrivaled by anything else. There was a lot of things in EVE that were boring for me such as running missions i.e pve, mining, industrial etc. and i quit the first time i tried it but i came back to it later and once i got my first killmail of another player i got a great buzz from it and kept on playing. The politics that surrounds EVE is something I still find fascinating and look over forums from time to time to keep up with whats going on.

If you want to start out and make yourself a worse person my suggestion is first thing to do is run all the tutorials. This will give you an idea of what flying around space is like, a very basic overview of some mechanics, make some money, what the difference is between what you can do in the game and most importantly will let you die for the first time, which is something you will probably be doing a lot of especially at the start.
Next thing is get yourself into a good corp. The thing is its very difficult to tell the difference between a bad corp and a good one when you first start playing so my suggestion is to join one called Eve University who specialize in training new players with audio classes and archived mp3s aswell as reading guides.
Avoid sec level 0.0 (lawless) and 0.1-0.4 space (here be pirates, only protection you have is sentry guns) like the plauge unless you are going there for a reason. If you manage to end up there espeically in 0.0 you will most likely be dispatched veryyy quickly. 0.5- 1.0 space is 'protected' by concord which basically means consequences of extremely fast certain death for anyone that does shoot you here so most of the time you are just fine here.
And remember the golden rule: Never fly something you can't afford to lose! You will lose it eventually. The only time you can not potentially be shot right now is when you are sitting in a station. Although when the Walking in Stations i.e Incarna expansion is released you probably wont be safe there either :3

Yes, I agree, the concept of EVE has always seemed interesting, and even did a 14 day trial, but the progression of the game is too slow (for me). EVE should go in the direction of the new WoW philosophy catering to the predominant demographic of casual gamers that can only give an hour or two a day, while maintaining the appeal that keeps the hardcore players still interested (e.g. fast leveling, faster travel, less grinding. [all compared to vanilla WoW to current WoW]). The most recent WoW patch and expansion is the future of MMO gaming, something mainstream, and that allows people with families, work, and life, to still enjoy for a few hours every other night.

What Eve Online needs is a movie.

Also, in Eve you are not constantly hailed as a Hero or Saviour of All etc like in most other MMOs. You just start out as one of the small worker-ants (with the possible dream of being the king of all ants).

@AddyMac:  nah mate I'll (very simply) explain. Say just you ( a newbie) and a powerful player are out hunting and you both engage with a enemy ship. Your powerfull ally has large guns that can't track the faster enemy ship so your powerful friend would die on his own. However, he is with you and what you can do is scramble the enemies engines to slow his ship enough for your ally to track and kill him. So there you go, very useful in just a few weeks.

This sounds like Shadowbane, but with ships. And a lot more time-consuming.

Maybe once I'm done with school it'd be something to look into.
