@LoveYouSomeEric: I would, because it's the same thing, though french and german game design is largely the same as american game design anyway (I would probably say Russian is a better theoretical example)

statement is still shitty, racist or not

@codenamechaz: People on Twitter are basically calling him a racist, that would piss me off too. And it's not like he's wrong. The majority of games coming out of Japan these days are just freaking horrible.

Japanese developers have said as much. People are just shooting the messenger.

Haven't seen this level of racism since the Oregon Trail Quick Look.

Game looks brilliant, though. ;)

@Animasta: If you are hung up on the nationality of the game developers used in my hypothetical, you may have missed the point of my argument. That's not the important detail.

His statement may well be shitty (which is debatable), but "shitty" does not necessarily mean "racist." One cheapens the meaning of "racist" (which has a specific meaning) by using it in circumstances where it does not apply. Saying he doesn't like modern Japanese games does not rise to the level of disparaging an entire group of people based on their ethnic or national origin.

@NoelVeiga: Personally, I wouldn't say it's racism, it was just an unfortunate way to express that opinion.

There's nothing wrong with thinking Japanese games, on the whole, have been disappointing recently, or that game development in Japan has become stagnant.

But to whittle it down to "your games suck, bro", and to direct it at a Japanese Dev asking an innocuous question to you, when you're sitting on an official GDC panel and just showed your trailer to your upcoming game... well... I would say that at the very least, it was a poor choice.

Personally, I'd say it was massively insensitive. And while it wasn't technically racism, his choice to direct it at the people rather than the games themselves was unfortunate, at best.

Not to mention it certainly doesn't look great for him as a representative of Fez.

A guy asks him for his honest serious opinion. Whats he supposed to do? Be disrespectful and lie by fluffling things up?

He stated his opinion, and also backed it up with his reasons, whether they are agreeable or not.

What benefit does it serve to the Japanese developer to get a dishonest answer? Better a controversial opinion than a misleading one I'd say.

Crush on the PSP did it first, only it's not pandering to retro fascists so it didn't sell. And I guess it might have had something to do with it being on the PSP. Maybe. Probably.

(It's $5 on the PS Store if you've got a Vita or a PSP)

@Homelessbird: Meh. It's one of those things were you're talking one to one with a guy from a different background than you are and you just want to have a chance at having this confrontation, I guess. I know, I've been there myself. I mean, I can't speak for him, but if you have a strong opinion and are given a rare chance to run it by a person immersed in it more directly than you are I see the temptation to take that opportunity.

I wasn't there, but just from the transcript I don't see him being "an asshole" for it. Maybe rude. Rude is a word. Rude kind of describes that.

But just for the record, the current tally is:

  • Guy directly harassing woman out of a gaming tournament - worth defending but controversial
  • Guy saying things about blowjobs and girlfriends to promote his game - totally worth defending
  • Lady criticising the quality of the previous guy's game - she's a bitch
  • Guy expressing somewhat harshly an opinion about a game development culture that several prominent members of that same culture share openly - he's an asshole

I feel that gaming as a community needs to rearrange its priorities.

EDIT: For the record, not having played any Fez I don't see why it's so hyped, but I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised. This is not about his game in any way. I'm not "a fan". At least not until I get to see what everybody was raving about before this happened.

Are you talking about the gaming community as a whole?

Personally, while I was dismayed that people felt like defending Aris during the whole Cross Counter controversy, I saw just as many, if not more, condemning him.

Although I personally thought the David Jaffe thing was blown out of proportion, I saw a lot of people criticizing him there as well.

I'm not sure what your third point is referring to.

As I expressed before (and I think, nominally, that you agree with me), it was the way Fish chose to express himself, not necessarily the content. He used his platform to talk down to somebody who didn't necessarily deserve it, and painted a whole group with one brush - that's gonna rile some people up. And again, it seems like there are people on both sides of the argument.

I agree that there are many people that are looking at the wrong aspects of these particular issues... but I'm not sure it's an endemic community problem. It's a community - there are gonna be all kinds.

Sigh. His opinion has a break in logic, because he said, "All." He certainly can't have played every single one of them. Otherwise, his opinion is perfectly fine, even if he was an "asshole" about it. Also, this looks like a Japanese game, which probably means he doesn't hate the japanese industry; He's just bitter about what it once was, and how long it's taking the Japanese to get back to the groove of making awesome games that don't just copy past games instead of iterate.

@NoelVeiga: When did we defend Aris' behaviour? If anything it was totally the opposite. Also those last two points were not about the fact that they were criticizing a game or set of games but the manner in which it was done, which if your supposed to be a professional in the industry does matter, something which Jaffe's comment also falls under and should be called out on (although I still maintain it was sexist moreso misogynistic, but that's neither here nor there). At least that's my opinion on the matter.

Yeah, you know what? I AM talking about the gaming community as a whole. As a group we have a tendency to crusade whenever things apply to somebody else and get extremely defensive when things apply to ourselves, often with equal lack of basis on both ends of the spectrum. We also tend to mistake people for their work output and vice versa. That happens. That's an endemic, systemic issue with the group of people who play games and also go online to discuss those games. Like all issues of its type, it doesn't apply to 100% of the individuals, but it is widespread enough to affect even those that aren't part of the problem.

As for whether I agree with you, yes, I don't disagree that he wasn't particularly diplomatic (again, based on text reports, I haven't heard him say this). I just wonder if it warrants any of the bile in this thread in return.

Oh, my third point is about Leigh Alexander getting a ton of shit for tweeting that she thought that Twisted Metal "sucked".

Hmm... well, I'd certainly agree with some of that - you are accurate in your criticisms of the way the gaming community at large responds to things.

I guess where I disagree is that I see that type of discourse as being more symptomatic of the Internet as a whole (and perhaps symptomatic of the times). Which is not to say that the gaming community shouldn't bear any responsibility - it should! As a group that has such a pervasive presence on the Internet, I would love it if our community were leading the way. I don't hold out hope for that, though.

I would agree that maybe some of the response in this thread is extreme. But that's kinda what you get with an extreme statement.

That and because of his statements about Fez never coming to PC because he wanted to "preserve the sanctity" or some crap of the "console experience", even at the cost of sales, because the game was made to be played with a controller.

I could never really find a direct quote from Phil saying no to PC but if that's true then man the guy is an idiot for saying it. Not releasing to another platform purely because of something like that makes no sense, but hey if the guy doesn't want to make any more money beyond one platform then fine, he won't have it.

I find it astonishing that Fez continues to release trailers like this. Has nobody pulled Phil Fish aside and said "Look, dude, the trailers for your game are just art porn/music porn, and the only way people even know what the fuck your game is like is if they've watched shitty camcorder footage from E3"? Because looking at the comments, I'm not alone in criticizing these trailers for being useless at communicating the game's pretty neat gameplay and premise.

But hey man, I guess if he wants to do a fucking terrible job at showing off what his game actually is, I can't stop him.

Since when did GiantBomb start showing trailers of non existent games? 5 years since this got announced, its becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of the Indie world.

The game is now finished- it's not a case of messing people around.

I don't blame an ostensibly one-man game for taking so long. He's had the concept for a long time of switching round the dimensions which is in itself interesting and so got coverage even years ago but he confesses himself that he just didn't have a game structure for it worked out until in the last year or so I think. These things can't always be magicked into existence quicker, especially when people are often imperfect in their organisational skills.

sounds alan moore ish ,, also that statement is flawe as i use a xbox360 controller for just about anything that isnt a fps on pc .. heck meat boy basicly required you to have one, but thinks hats more due to the developers not bothering to tighten up the keyboard controls ...

mabye when fez was first anounced waaay back in the olden days , the steam indie market wasnt thriving how it is today , he could have easily seen the most "profit"on xbox , releasing on pc was just a way to get more exposure from pirates really.(good old world of goo)

Nowadays places like steam are much much much more attractive and profitable to indie developers , the only logical reason for his avoidance of steam now is stubbornness , he made his statements at a moment when they were valid criticisms , but now they just look stupid , PC indie gamers are THE #1 audience for this game right now .. and im sure alot of them share my simple sentiment .

I DONT ( and never will ) OWN A XBOX360 BUT I STILL WANT TO PLAY YOUR GAME ... FFFUUUUUU

On the one hand, I've been excited about this for a while. I find indie games more interesting than mainstream fare like Mass Effect--I think I've just played so many games that the more unique the better. On the other, I found out today that by purchasing this game when it goes on sale I'd be giving money to a pretentious hosebag who pissed all over the Japanese games industry, for no good reason. I'm torn.

Wow people like to whine.

Guess what? Most games that come out of Japan suck. I'm pretty sure some Japanese developers have said as much.

And if you're calling him a racist for saying that...then you're an idiot. If I say that that KIA cars suck does that make me anti-Korean? If I say that Chinese steel sucks does that make me anti-Chinese?

Anyone calling Phil Fish pretentious for pointing out what most people consider to be a well-documented fact need to take a look in the mirror before shitting out stupid insults for no good reason.
