As far as I'm concerned this is still the greatest piece of content GB has ever produced. Hopefully the podcast partnership with 8-4 will give them some more contacts in the region and lead to more content like this. I know Korea is really far from Japan but it's closer than San Francisco. A man can dream cant he?!?

Now that Giant Bomb has bushels of cash, they should absolutely have Brad go out to some more eSports events to report on their continued growth. The first MLG tournament of the year is next week. ;)

Yes, cramming that many people into the condo would make it a challenge to live there, but thankfully Korea has amenities that make it possible to have a social life in spite of not having much privacy at home. That's why PC Bangs (IGRs), DVD bangs (private DVD movie rooms), noraebangs (private Karaoke rooms) exist -- so you can go on a date w/o dealing with the people you live with (such as your parents). "
This is almost exactly my experience of the culture in Japan, having lived there for a year. It's why Love Hotels exist!

I found it odd at first -- the idea of going somewhere else to find this entertainment we'd usually get at home -- but I was fascinated by the idea and gave a couple of IGRs a go. However, PC gaming in Japan is a very different and uniquely impenetrable beast. Seemed like there were few western style games on offer, but I did catch some guys playing Counter Strike once. Don't know if Starcraft has quite the audience in Japan, or if Starcraft II is delivered the same way through IGRs, but I'd be interested to look for it next time I'm out there.

One more thing about the Asian idea of "Public Privacy", the only thing that really breaks the illusion of privacy for me in all those kinds of set ups is whenever there's smoking. That, above all else, probably spoils it the most.

Excellent job on the video, very informative and revealing. I've been looking forward to seeing this since you discussed it on the podcast last week and it definitely didn't disappoint.

I was actually surprised at how clean the house appeared, I hate to say it, but when I've heard of these types of houses in the past there has been a certain stigma attached to them. In my head I've always pictured them as being dirty and dingy and just having overall poor living conditions.

It's nice that at least in this instance that stigma  has been proven incorrect.

@Baconator:
The top level kespa licensed progamers are usually contracted for X (1-3) amount of years, the average salary is around the average salary of the average Korean, which is close to what the average salary in the US is, however the best of the best can earn literally millions during their top years. Lee Young Ho and Lee Jae Dong, the two best players at the moment, earn more than $15k a month from their salaries and tournament winnings add a few hundred thousand a year on a good year on top of that. Depending on contracts they might get bonuses based on their results in the proleague (team league ran by MBC and OGN, the two tv channels that broadcast SC). Progamers pay very little in taxes because they have official progamer licenses, so this makes the occupation very profitable.

The players can get money from other sources as well, including commercials and various events they appear in. Lee Young Ho recently appeared in the G20 introduction video for South Korea, which shows how big of a name he is in SK.

Of course I wouldn't next to the shit loads of Blenders, Mixers, Slicers and all that crap (of which some is useful), I don't even have space for a rice cooker, but on the other hand, you know, to condescend on you like you did on me, us euros know how to cook our selves, we don't need shit loads of appliances that do stuff for us as easy as boil water with rice - really it's rice (even a 5 year old could cook rice as a chef), you could've jump on me for if I said fryers are useless, I could understand that since it eases you know the mess with frying in a pan and the oil popping out all over the place, but even a fryer is kinda useless if you know how to cook properly yourself and by that I mean not drowning the food in oil and wondering where all that fat on your stomach came from 10 years down the line.

I wonder how much you make as pro gamers who's part of a team. Do you get a regular paycheck and a fat bonus if you win a tournament?

I'm actually only partly joking. If you look at pro Street Fighter players, they have a hand speed most normal people cannot fathom. I'm a decent Street Fighter player, but I'll never get to that level because I'm just not fast enough.

It's makes me laugh watching this.
Obviously the best strategy is to marque select everything and click on the enemy.
It's not rocket science. I choose not to crush these professionals as I don't want to cost anyone their job.

I like how he says "free time" as if playing video games is actually, you know...a job.

Additionally I also love how he acts almost like they're actually athletes.

i have a lot of respect for these guy's . they put in 12/13 hrs a day on 1 game and that is hard work !
i think it's great that they invite players from other country's to live in korea and get on a pro team.
what suprised me was that none of them had any personal shit in the rooms, apart from clothing .
that's a bit wierd ....

I can't help but notice that the vast majority of derogatory comments here could be applied to most American jobs. I completely understand where you guys are coming from, but realistically, *many* people have far more unpleasant and physically demanding jobs than playing StarCraft for a living. It's a really nasty job, to be sure, but it's most definitely not the worst. Besides, you can't knock these guys for deciding to exchange some personal luxuries for a life of fame.

Man, I can't believe some of the comments hating on these guys.

Compare it to, say, a 12 hour shift admin job in America.  12 hours of tedious work plus travelling times to/from work every day, but people are happy with it because they get a solid wage.  There's no real highlight to the job, nobody but your boss sees your work, but hey, it pays bills and gets you a decent amount of savings, so as a job, it's fine!

In the job these guys have, they're doing the same 12 hour shifts, but they're playing sweet videogames all day, they don't have to worry about travelling times and costs, they're provided with a free home to stay at (even if they do chores, man, it's a free year-round hotel with high speed internet access and TV!), and every year they casually go out and get televised/internet broadcasted as near-celebrities for their tangible skill seen by millions. That's WAY better than that typical 12 hour admin job.
