I was working at Bizarre Creations on Blur at this time, and was asked if I'd attend the press days to help show off the game and answer any technical questions they might have. I knew Ryan and Vinny were going to Europe, but didn't know it was Liverpool until the morning of the second day when they walked into the conference suite we'd booked out. Was so much to show off the game I was working hard on to two of my favourite entertainers, and sitting down and playing split-screen multiplayer with Ryan was a real treat.

Things got better when, as the event started to wind down, beers were passed out and I decided to play it cool and briefly introduce myself to Vinny and mention that I was a fan of the site. Of course, Vinny being Vinny, he insisted that we grab a beer and I spent the next hour or so enjoying a couple of drinks with him (Ryan joined us for the second) and talking about games, their trip, and everything else that came to mind. Ryan mentioned that he had to find a souvenir for his then-girlfriend, who I'm pretty sure became his wife last week.

Feel heartbroken, and know that after I head home from work this evening I'll be raising a glass to Ryan and all the fun times he and the GB crew have brought me. Meeting him and Vinny was the highlight of the two-and-a-half years I spent working in Liverpool.

Gonna miss you, duder.

EDIT: oh wow, that's me standing next to Ryan and looking into the camera at 5:21. nice to know there's evidence that I met a really great guy.

Was enjoying the video so much I forgot why I was watching it. :( Fuck it, this is a terrible, terrible situation. It's one of those ones where you go to do something else, forget for awhile and then it dawns on you again. You immediately dismiss it as not being true but then remember it is. I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning thinking it was a dream and then be hit by the full shittiness of it again. Life is so fucking strange. Everything ends.

My thoughts are with everyone who knew him personally, especially his widow.

Even after today's horrible, crushing news, this video just makes me laugh. What a likable, entertaining man the world has lost. It is truly tragic, and my thoughts are with Ryan's wife, his family, and the Giant Bomb crew. As terrible as this news was for me, someone who never met Ryan, I can't imagine how devastating it must be for the people who knew and loved him.
