Here's That Crazy Ass Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Everyone's Talking About

Yeah that makes sense. I was secretly hoping that Phantom Pain is the story about how Big Boss met the Liquid's era FOXHOUND members.

Right now I just want to know the release date and whether it will be on current or next gen consoles.

Yeah, I just looked it up and apparently a rep for Konami...or KP...had confirmed that it's literally two different games. So, chronologically...we'd have to play Ground Zeroes and then play Phantom Pain.

I think Phantom Pain would be the precursor to Metal Gear 1. It doesn't look like Phantom Pain will feature a 20-something Solid Snake, so it looks like it'll be before that and Outer Heaven / Zanzibar.

Absolutely painful to watch.

From what I heard during the conference, it seems like MGS 5 is a duology (?). First part is Ground Zeroes, which take place after Peace walker (Big Boss / Naked Snake arc). Second part is Phantom Pain, 9 years after Ground Zeroes, which I believe to be precursor to original MGS on PSOne.

Also, I've read other places that some people were confused about why Ocelot looked so much older than he did in MGS3.

This game should be taking place about 20 or 25 years after MGS3. Just something I think some might want to know.

Even though I'm confused as shit. Was Ground Zeroes ever a thing? Is it still a thing? If both GZ and PP are MGS5, then which one is part 1 and....you know what? Fuck it. I don't care. Just release it (or them, whatever) and I'll buy it and play it.

Kojima Productions is a developer that I just like. Everything I've played with their fingerprints on it, I've enjoyed. So, they've earned my (consumer) trust in the madness that Hideo Kojima brings.

@thefantasticfillip: Wow, thanks for that. I've played all the main line games, and I thought I knew the story... but it turns out I only was vaguely aware of half of it.

Maybe I should finally get around to playing MGS3 and MGS4. I've owned them for YEARS...

This trailer got me really interested to see how this bizarre story will attempt to unfold.

MGS4 totally ruined the MGS franchise for me. I know there are tons of people out there that loved 4 but me personally, I hated it because Snake (after all these years) still moves like he was animated from popsicle sticks and the 87 and 1/2 hour movies Kojima puts in there.
You're either a game maker or a movie director Hideo, you can't and you need to stop being both. Pick one and totally drop the other.
So why would I even bother to consider playing this next game?

Well it's kinda like a train wreck to watch everything unfold, the characters are bat shit insane and I've played every MGS game up to this point so why stop now.
Having said, I will not be there day one. I'll pick it up much later down the road when it becomes less expensive.

I refuse to reward Kojima's movie making with my hard earned money with a day one purchase.

@Norusdog: I hear you, dude. I want to love Metal Gear (played them all), but I feel like the further we go, the more stuff I have to pretend isn't there to enjoy the good parts.

The pseudo-mystical stuff at Shadow Moses was one thing, but dudes summoning bees and crazy flaming whales? Come on, Hideo. Seriously man.

Do we know how long it's been since PW at the start of this game? If you remember the GZ trailer he was using some tech that I wouldn't place in the mid-70s. Basically, I want this game to set up MG1 and finally take this series full circle and it would probably need to start later than 74 and 83.

I still can't decide if I want this to be my first Metal Gear or not. I thought MGS4 looked interesting, but everything I heard about it made it seem like the story would make even less sense to me than it did to those that had played the previous games. I wonder how accessible this will be.

Great music choice. Too bad I find Kojima's universe to be incredibly convoluted. Still, awesome trailer, and I do like the MGS games I've played.

@max_cherry: This game is a direct follow up to some of the events in Peace Walker, so no, that won't happen. In the Ground Zeroes trailer, they mention several things from that game, and this seems to be based off the true ending of PW. The Ground Zeroes portion takes place in 1974/1975, and the part after he wakes up will probably be around 1983.

Ah, you see, it's probably all answered in Peace walker.

I only played MGS1, MGS2, MGS2 Substance, MGS3, MGS3 Subsistence, and MGS4 all multiple times and I DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS. But I like it and this trailer was enchanting.

God I love Metal Gear, no matter how crazy and messed up the storytelling might be. You just got to love Kojima for doing what the hell he wants and that it sells copies. This looks crazy!

It was pointed out in the Neogaf thread regarding the first showing Phantom Pains. The Burning man with the glowing eyes resembles Volgin.

Diamond Dogs is also the name of David Bowie album that was released in 1974.

This is a shot in the dark but could there be a chance that the man with the bandaged face could be Frank Jaeger? I didn't play Portable Ops and don't know what happened to him after San Hieronymo. He eventually meets up with Big Boss in the 80s.

After what is shown, I looking forward to see how MGS5 turns out.

I... okay, look. I love me some MGS. I think the series is pretty crazy - it does some real cool action Hollywood stuff mixed with just the right amount of crazy anime japanese stuff that makes me not take it too seriously, but really love it. With that said... I thought this trailer was awesome. It's Kojima alright.

But Hayter... I dunno man. He is _such_ a part of the character, whether he be Solid Snake or Big Boss, he is THE voice of Metal Gear. I don't know how Kojima could not have signed him back on... does that mean the Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka is not on board?

I know what I'm going to say sounds trivial and completely ignorant, but I'm probably going to skip this one now. After how many years and how many games they just go with another dude? No thanks. That will be far to jarring to me. That voice is iconic and it shouldn't be fucked with.

Granted I get that they used a different guy for Big Boss in MGS4 but it doesn't matter. It's just... dumb to mess with something like that that people can clearly identify.

Metal Gear Solid is the best.

I think what screws me up is that there is like 6 of the same character who all look exactly the same in MSG. So I don't know who is who on screen so any attempts to try to follow what is going on is met with my brain exploding. On the plus side the writing is always overly complex as if to imply something absolutely crazy is going on, the editing and sound stuff is always great and it looks pretty. So while a lot of may end up as nonsense from a substance perspective, at least it has style.

My biggest issue with MSG is that they have never really been all that fun to play. This looks like it tries to bridge some of the gap at least from the parts of gameplay footage I saw.
