Here's What This Year's Call of Duty Multiplayer Looks Like

Team killstreaks, double jumping exosuits, and all kinds of other future-type business look to set this year's Call of Duty apart from the previous entries.

At least this CoD isn't the same ol' John Cena. Whether it works or not, I'm glad they're doing new things. I think it looks like it'll work, though!

I hope this game has player vs a.i, otherwise I never see myself doing anything close to what the people in this trailer are doing.

I kind of feel bad for the guys at Respawn because everyone had these amazing hopes for the fathers of Call of Duty to come and revolutionize the FPS genre and here comes another Call of Duty and it looks to do everything Titanfall did but better and flashier.

Compared to Titanfall this looks awfully stiff. The guys at Respawn obviously put a lot of time and effort into making sure the movement in their game felt smooth and well paced; this just looks like a lazy attempt to add some verticality to an otherwise boring formula. In fact, if you throw in the map hazards (taken from Battlefield) and the nanosuit-like stuff (taken from Crysis) you've basically got a game that's trying to compete with all of the competition but doesn't actually doing anything better or unique.

@icyeyes: I'm guessing sledgehammer/ activision PR just sent @jeff the same video as the one they put up on youtube.

I seriously don't think he would take the time to take a video off youtube to put on Giantbomb, no matter how minimal the effort.

I think making it slower than Titanfall is a good thing. A few people have said in this thread that one of the best things about CoD, and the reason it's so successful, is that's it's very dependable, with yearly releases tweaking it slightly. Sometimes pushing it forward, sometimes sideways, very rarely backwards. The unique thing you think they're missing is, in my opinion, the CoD gameplay. It's still there. Had they fully adopted a faster gameplay style, then that's turning the franchise on it's head. Bad for business because that's not what their core fans want. This adopts a good middle ground with the verticality reminiscent of Titanfall, while maintaining the traditional CoD feel. Honestly, we'll have to see how lazy it is when the game comes out. But at first glance it doesn't seem lazy to me, it seems like they've got it right where they want it.

Man, they're really going for it this year, huh? I'm excited.

I mean, for the first time since like, Modern Warfare 2, it seems like they're just wildly introducing every crazy idea they could think of, regardless of whether it might break the game completely.

That's great.

I am a little concerned about the apparent move toward random "loot drop" unlocks though, as it almost certainly means more F2P-style hooks to go along with it.

(Also, how weird is it that CoD, the series that takes place on Earth and always claims to be based on the real-life military, now appears to have crazier future-guns in it than Titanfall? I'm not sure what that means.)

Good lord the tsunami looked horrible! In fact, most of the visuals in this seemed pretty damn crappy. I guess it's the constant issue of creating a game for last-gen and current-gen systems. :/

I'm all for this trend of increased-mobility in first person shooters. I enjoyed the realistic period, but it's high time those games were blended with the freedom of movement that more classic 'arcadey' shooters of yesteryear offered. Seems like Titanfall might have helped usher in a new series of neat shooters.

Also this is looking waaay more promising than the Ghosts multiplayer reveal - that ended up being the first CoD in years that I didn't buy, but perhaps they'll sell me on this one. I did say when Titanfall came out that I'd like a game with that level of mobility but without the Titan mechanic, and I never completely fell out of love with CoD so much as tired of its mechanics somewhat. If this manages to freshen things up, I'll absolutely give it a shot.

Seems like they're just as lackadaisical about their Danger Close as ever with those drone missile attacks - although I'm all for a controllable Ion Cannon, so that's cool.

That was actually rather impressive. Looked really fun, fast and daft. I mean, I'd still be terrible at it, but this has actually made me interested in CoD multiplayer for the first time in a while.

Black Ops 2 was real real good, so if it is that with SciFi shit I am all in because unlike Titanfall I know a CoD will have some meat to it, and hopefully the SP campaign is great and they have a Bunch of challenge maps.

@nethlem: Easy tiger,

Read my comment again, I'm not sure what you thought I meant but more mobility, double jumping, air to ground attacks and jet packs firmly peg this as a similar approach to multiplayer shooting as Titanfall.

The difference being this looks like it might be better balanced and a little more varied. Titanfall wasn't what everyone wanted it to be. This looks better than run of the mill Call of Duty and the comparison is valid.

The look of this excites me, the look of Titanfall doesn't.

What more is there to say?

But at first glance it doesn't seem lazy to me, it seems like they've got it right where they want it.

Their yearly releases (between different studios) with "slight" changes lacked direction and focus, that's why the franchise has lost what actually made it unique in the first place: The twitchy fast pace with an semi-realistic setting.

Since Modern Warfare 1, Call of Duty has been pretty much considered the "arcade version of counter strike". Basically Counter Strike for Quake and Unreal players who didn't want to bother too much with recoil mechanics playing into movement, but rather favored movement heavy twitchy aiming. Twitch aiming is involved in both, but in very different ways: Counter Strike in that regard is closer to an ARMA while Modern Warfare ended up being closer to Quake/UT.
That's why the 60 fps for CoD multiplayer had been such an "bullet point", CoD had always been about twitchy fast gameplay, movement included.

Titanfall feels like a nice evolution in that regard, as it has integrated verticality back to the genre comparable to Quake rocket jumping levels (if not even surpassing them), it's extreme freedom of movement at a very fast pace. The game is also build and balanced around these ideas (agile pilots vs titans).

I see nothing like that in this trailer, what i see is a lot of "You know this awesome thing from some game? We have that too!"

Jump jets, mechs, nano suits, battlefield style "levelution", tons of strange gadgets and abilities, guess there's even some half-arsed scripted destructibility event thrown in there somewhere.

They've thrown it all in there, like ticking of boxes on a list, thus it does not feel coherent and looks underwhelming in it's details (like the movement, clunky jump jet use, lack of side action in longer gameplay segments). Of course they can tweak a lot of that till release, but will it give the game some coherent vision in any way? Or a design philosophy to set it apart from the crowd, make it actually worthy of the "Call of Duty" name?

I don't know and right now i don't really see it happening with Advanced Warfare.

I still play arena shooters because of the massive mobility they let you have. Why CoD took so long to adopt the double jump and side-step is beyond me.

If you wanna unreal tournament up CoD multiplayer...maybe I'll actually buy this one.

When the music started, I thought, "is this actually happening?" Are we still using that lazy score in 2014? Why won't it die? Is it just a one-button preset in Avid Pro Tools at this point? Why do I ask so many rhetorical questions?

As for the actual game, I think I'm just getting too old to care about these things anymore. At some point during Modern Warfare 2 I could feel everyone start to leave me behind, and the next day I was yelling at some kids to get off my lawn.

(I don't even have a lawn)

Well, we can finally swim. That means you can fall into bodies of water and swim about, which may be an interesting change from the fall off the edge and you die of the past games. The jump jet stuff is very Killzone, but I can see why people will just say Titanfall.

As with all CoD games it is very fast paced and using all the tools is how you win...keep moving, keep shooting , keep expending special weapons.

Still looks like you die in 2 bullets which is unfortunate, but this could still be fun if A) the create a class stuff is well done (unlike Ghosts), and B) the killstreaks are fun to use (unlike Ghosts).

@guncannond:

Your comment is the smartest i have read about a COD game in a long time. Its just jealousy from other franchises that make the "same" comment, and are blinded by nostalgia. No matter what anyone says, the brand COD is one of quality, excitement, polish and fun. Isnt that all we want from a game franchise?

Not to be an ass, but you have a military hero as an avatar.

This game looks decent. I still play a lot of Black Ops 2 just as a mindless release that I don't have to pay much attention to so a shiney new CoD that doesn't suck is welcome.

I'm one of those people that still buys Call of Duty every year, probably because I've gotten good enough at it that it's still entertaining and my friends are still into it as well.

Looks pretty rad, although it's hard to judge multiplayer trailers when they're scripted like this.

At first I was like, "Yes." And then I was like "No." Up until last year I loveddd me some COD, but now they're just trying too hard. Hopefully the kill streaks are better than they were in Ghosts!

Not sure why people keep insisting this is "copying" titanfall when both games probably started development at the same time, if not the earliest of ideas for this before titanfall.
