Cool, I guess? Maybe one day somebody will explain the hook these games have to me.

The gameplay hook is most similar to an MMORPG. So, lots of quests to kill X monster with a chance to drop Y material. Craft better weapons, level up, rinse and repeat until you are fighting the giant crazy monsters. You do this online, in instances with up to 4 people.

The reason I love Tri over the PSP games, despite having a fraction of the content, is because it fixed the hitbox issue. I can't imagine them undoing that.

Fucking hyped for this. Hope the 3DS version has all the same content as the WiiU, which it seems like it will, as I'm definitely not getting a Wii U haha.

While this does look interesting... just a shame I'm not going to get a Wii U just for this game. Now if only Capcom would localize and bring over Monster Hunter Frontier.

It's weird to say this because I haven't been diehard about a Nintendo product since the SNES but the Wii U is shaping up real nicely. Who knew?

If I were getting a Wii U anywhere near launch, I'd probably finally pick up a Monster Hunter. Capcom should dump in some new lights though. These assets with a proper HD console lighting engine would look gorgeous - doesn't even need shaders and materials. These visuals are colorful and beautifully painted. But the lighting is like some weird halfway point between a PS2 game with tons of Bloom lighting (like Shadow of the Colossus) and an actually well lit HD console game. They shouldn't half ass it; they should redo the lighting entirely.

Maybe for the next one, Capcom will partner up with Spark Unlimited or some other western studio again. And they can finally make a proper, built-from-the-ground-up HD Monster Hunter, with smoother controls and a better online experience. An online experience like Borderlands, where you can drop in and out of other people's games all the time. Maybe get some sort of mount that can carry 4 players. Stuff like that.

Might pick this up for 3DS. If Capcom comes up with controls that don't give you "Monster Hunter Claw" for the people out there without the second analog stick attachment.

What I want is a MH game that looks like (or close) to the opening cinematics of each game. Huge environments with no loading in between and 6-player co-op. villages that feel alove with NPC's. And none of those shitty low-polygon models for everything! But this is Crapcom we're talking about so it will never happen...

Maybe so, it's been a long time since I've played anything on a PS2. But just in the past year I've played the Jak and Daxter HD Collection, Sly Cooper HD Collection, ICO/SotC HD, and Ratchet and Clank HD Collection. And, I stand by what I said: this game looks exactly like an HD remastering of a PS2 game.

Yeah, it's a bummer they're still sticking to these art assets but from what I understand it's not going to be a full priced game. That's something, at least. I mean I don't care either way since I love Monster Hunter, but yeah.

@SagaciousJones: When I saw Patrick was gonna try this I hit reply to link him to Social's tutorials, only to see you had beat me to it.

I have to disagree with you on what's the biggest hurdle for new players, I'd say that it's not knowing that you can dodge-cancel out of attack animations. When I learned how to do that I went from getting wrecked by EVERYTHING, to actually being able to play the game.

@patrickklepek: The biggest hurdle to getting into MH is learning how the weapons work. Each has very specific play-styles and attacks which are often completely inscrutable without external tutorials.

I recommend watching some of these very nice tutorial videos whose essential lessons will carry over from Tri to Tri-G:

http://www.youtube.com/user/SocialDissonance/videos?query=tutorial

This advice goes to anyone interested in MH. Knowing how the obscure mechanics work will make or break your experience and the games usually completely fail to teach them to you! That guy's profile also explains how the armor and skill systems work, which are also fairly complicated.

Edit: Those videos assume you've played through the in-game tutorial and are familiar with the basic mechanics (moving, menus) and mission structure. If you don't have the game running in front of you to play along with, don't try to figure it out by just watching.

Man, this should be a franchise that I so love but every version I've ever tried and every piece of media I've ever seen just feels like it's so half-assed :(

Much in the same way everyone's been dreaming of a full-on 3D Pokemon adventure.

@Shrekeh: Making an argument about graphics quality of a console with the example of a Wii to 3DS to Wii U port hardly makes sense. Also, please use paragraphs. Your post is a pain in the ass to read.

@Shrekeh: its an up res of a 3ds game you cant really expect to much from that can you?

seems to be on par with what capcpom did with the ps3 verson of portable 3rd
