Nintendo's Not Holding Another E3 Press Conference, But...

Nintendo has gone full Willy Wonka. I'm just waiting for the Mushroom Kingdom equivalent of oompa loompas.

I would have felt differently a few years ago, but at this point, I don't care a whole lot about E3 conferences. I enjoy the hype and spectacle, but half of the biggest showings are tiny vertical slices of proof of concepts that are years from release. I'm a fan of the way Nintendo is keeping a lot of their announcements close to their chest and showing them via Nintendo Directs once they're actual products with imminent release dates.

I have no idea if it makes good PR or business sense to stay so low-key, but I personally think their current Nintendo Direct system is a much more sensible and respectful (of my intelligence) way of showing games.

And I know this probably won't happen, but I want the winner of that Smash Bros tournament to play against Reggie as himself, which causes Nintendo to announce that Reggie is a secret character in the new Smash Bros! Final Smash: PLAY THE GAME!

I am genuinely curious to see how Nintendo demos Tomodachi Life at E3.

@megasheep: I don't know, would you guys like it more if tobuscus was shovelling hot, meme laden garbage down your throats? That's pretty much what the alternative to this is in video game based comedy.

I couldn't be happier for Mega64. They've come such an insanely long way from posting WMVs to download and watch to this.

If nothing else, this is at least a pretty funny video.

If this video is reminiscent of what Nintendo has to offer at E3, I weep for them. I understand why they didn't want to go toe to toe with Sony and Microsoft last year, but you would think this year they at least try to show like they are even in the same ball park as the other consoles.

Super disappointed that Nintendo doesn't do a proper E3 conference. I look forward to the big E3 circus so much, it's a shame Nintendo doesn't participate in the excitement. A pre-cooked video presentation just isn't the same.

Yeah, me neither. I like video games and all, but just because it's video game based humor, isn't enough for me I guess.

But more importantly, what a horrible way to get information out. It was pretty hard to understand what that guy was saying while he was pretending to be sweaty and out of breath.

@draxyle: They already did that video with Miyamoto years ago. I find it more surprising that it took this long for the less important people at Nintendo of America to do something with them.

MEGA64 do pretty great skits. I've never seen them do a really bad one and they have the balls to actually label themselves as pure humour, which y'know is pretty hard to pull off. First time I saw them was in the Shenmue skit and it cracked me up. I'm glad respected people like Reggie and Kojima agree to be part of their videos, they deserve it.

Nintendo is the last company I would expect to bring on Mega 64, though I guess just about every other major company has made a video with them at one point.

You can tell they were forced to keep this one PG though, quite unlike the Ken Kutaragi video (which is understandable).

Props to Reggie for taking part in that.

Hmm, I'd argue them not putting on a conference last year actually hurt them. I can see why they didn't with Sony and Microsoft overshadowing them but this year it shouldn't be exactly the same. Least that my opinion.

From what I saw at E3 last year it was just sad and embarrassing. If they want a smaller, more intimate setting, they should probably learn to do it right.

I know it's a slim chance, but I'm willing to bet money that Nintendo will reveal a game featuring Mario.

I prefer this Nintendo.

I also prefer them streaming tightly produced packages at E3, instead of putting on a cringe-inducing press conference that's 70% filler, 20% awkward speeches, 9% pausing for forced applause and 1% interesting games.

Also a Smash Bros. Tournament is a great idea. Competitive video games are a hot thing right now and streaming a live annual tournament every year would be fantastic. They used to have the Nintendo World Championships which were E-sports before E-sports were a thing basically, but they stopped doing them. I've always thought they should bring something like that back to get some more recognition with the hardcore gamers

Say what you will about Smash Bros. (I'm looking at you Jeff) but A LOT of people take that game seriously
