FUCKING SWAMP TENTACLES!

Seconded

Patrick is really loud in this video, much louder than Vinny and then he gets louder to talk over top of Vinny. I love the guy, and I normally defend him, but this video gave me a headache.

The issue with saying "rogue-like" for every game that has perma-death is that perma-death isn't really a defining feature of rogue-likes. They have it, certainly, but if that is that is all you need to qualify, most games of the 8-bit era are rogue-like.. you die and can't load a save.

If you plan on buying this, do it through their website, they give you 2 Steam keys and 2 Chrome keys, so 4 for the price of one.

To be fair, there are other sharing characteristics. Like the randomness of the world, and how there are lots of little hidden mechanics that reward experimentation. Not saying this is a roguelike because it isn't, but it's not just the perma-death that it shares.

@RanmaRanma: If you hover your mouse over the video, at the bottom right, you'll see a little icon of a speaker. Depending if you're using HTML5 or the normal player, you can either slide the little bar to the left or click on the red bars until more turn gray. This will make the sound lower.

Alternatively, in the bottom right corner of your task bar (if you're on Windows, you'll have to google for yourself if you're on a Mac or Linux, I'm not an expert at those OSes) should be another little icon of a speaker. You can click it and a slider will appear. Moving the slider further towards the bottom will also have the effect of lowering the video's sound. Make sure to raise the volume at a later time if other sounds appear to be too soft.

I just watched the entire video and Patrick's voice volume was pretty much the same as Vinny's. If there's any discrepancy, you can explain that by the mixing being off on the sound board (Damn you, Scanlon!!), the presenters' proximity to the microphones, or several other factors.

I like you, and normally defend you, but reading your post gave me a headache.

This game seems pretty neat. I might check it out.

is this the sequel to Don't Shit Your Pants?

Posted by Oi_Blimey

Looks really interesting. I bought it... sigh.

@jozzy: Yes, please :)

Time to roguelike: 2:50

Never starved in this game, I've been killed though by a lot of monsters. On day 18... still going strong

Been playing this for a few weeks, it's pretty rad.

Yes, but set in a different universe with an (mostly) new cast. Honestly not really that connected, I think if you get far enough into this one you discover that the dude you see REALLY briefly at the beginning of this game also stuck the guy in the room in DSYP. But really it seems like more of an excuse to attach a quick sequel to such a massive blockbuster.

The visuals remind me of James and the Giant Peach.

Dan Ryckert would like this game--I see quite a bit of Tail of the Sun in this game, even if it doesn't have an end goal.

And, Don't B Nervous Talking 2 Girls

I'm surprised no one has made a montage of all the clips where Patrick call's a game a rogue-like lol

Posted by Discoman

Hey I played this before. It was a warcraft 3 map where you gathered resources and managed your hunger, and sleep meter. I don't want to be a dick and think this is a shameless rip off, but damn the premise seems the same.

life is a roguelike

Edited by mdnthrvst

You know, Patrick, you should really abstain from using the term unless it's absolutely necessary or pertinent. These comments aren't even an argument about it anymore, it's just become so fraught and cliché that merely invoking it, even to immediately reject it, makes it a big, funny distraction. Nor were the creators apparently going for it, unlike Spelunky or the Binding of Isaac, which makes raising its spectre even more dubious. Surely we can discuss this game more productively than by framing it against a niche and inaccessible genre just because said genre has recently gained a measure of visibility (though, with one notable exception, primarily only for games it has influenced, as opposed to true examples of its expression.)

tl;dr stop talkin' 'bout muh roguelikes

Posted by DoctorWelch

Not sure if anyone noticed, but in both this QL and the Baldur's Gate QL Vinny tells Patrick/Ryan to go Northeast, and they instead go Northwest.

Bought myself into this beta a few weeks ago, and this game is still very much a beta. Anyone that's spent some time with the game is able to set up a farm within 1-2 in-game days removing any challenge from the game, and it's in no way open enough to be a sandbox game. Still hope it's gonna turn into something good though, but it's way way too early to judge it for what it is.

i think rogue likes need to have that, and procedurally generated enemies and worlds.

I've been curious about this game, really did the visual style.

Edit: after seeing this I'm sold I'm in when its officially out its like UnReal world with a better UI.

@Sveppi: Sorry, gave it to someone (faster) already.

Posted by Sveppi

@jozzy: No biggie, didn't see anyone in the comments ask so I figured I'd give it a shot.

this is the DayZ standalone.

Posted by prestonhedges

This is one of the few times where these guys compare a game to a roguelike and they are basically correct.

Posted by Rongaryen

Seems a bit simple but, still neat. I wouldn't call it a rogue-like, though.

Posted by thebigJ_A

I love how a tree got bigger right on screen while Vinny was asking "do you think [trees] get bigger?" and they didn't notice.

It's the simple things, folks.

Posted by ikaruga

argh, I can never watch giantbomb streaming video. Please upload all QL to youtube or fix the player

The character's look reminds me of Sweeney Todd

Posted by BlackSymbiote

Where does the name "rogue-like" come from? Specifically, I'm confused on the "-like" part at the end. How is it like a rogue?

Posted by SithToast

@BlackSymbiote: Now a rogue-like usually means, permadeath and random generation of the world.

Edited by KingVincent
Online
Edited by KookKui

@BlackSymbiote: The game Rogue basically blazed the trail for dungeon crawling with permadeath and randomized levels. So everything that has similar tropes is just referred to as "roguelike".

EDIT: Also everyone should check out Tales of Maj'Eyal http://te4.org/ recommended by Snide himself, its a solid roguelike.

Is their an end game, or do you just keep surviving?

Nice QL thanks guys.
