Lighting!

Lightening is Jesus?

I wouldn't complain if Lightning never ever talked

But she talks with the voice of Dr. Liara T'Soni. Who wouldn't want to listen to that?

TELL ME ABOUT THE NUMBERS!

@moseswalker: Always found it interesting how much tastes within the FF series differ. XII is like the only FF I actively dislike, and I really enjoyed XIII, though not as much as some earlier entries. Nobody can ever come to any agreement really. I guess because they are all such radically different from each other.

It gets this confusing because the divergence comes down to the story and characters, which can be very subjective. You rarely see people arguing that they like this FF or that FF solely because of a system or gameplay aspect.

Well, Final Fantasy games do for the most part have a similar core system of turn based combat. It's why FF12 and FF13 to a lesser extent were considered quite divergent, and divisive as a result.

(I would totally argue that FF8 is a terrible game based on mechanics alone.)

TELL ME ABOUT THE NUMBERS!

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN MASON!

Also this game looks like garbage.

Posted by bhlaab

So they decided to make a bad majora's mask? At some point Square Enix should just rename itself Eidos Japan and stop this charade.

Posted by shatted

I have a copy of Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring sitting twenty feet away from me. What a terrible, terrible game. Thanks for reminding me, Jeff.

Posted by Giefcookie

I would play this game, If it was free. How about it Square? No? Fine.

@hollitz: I remember liking 2 and 3 on the Super Nintendo. I don't know if they hold up now since I haven't played them in decades.

I do know that the best JRPG ever made is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. This is a fact. Also, I played a lot of the Final Fantasy Tactics games. I really liked the one on the GBA.

I'm almost done with the remake of FF3 on the DS, it's definitely a bit old school, but I've been enjoying it...except for the fact that the endgame is absolutely fucked. You have to get through the last 2-3 hours without any save points (i.e., a whole dungeon including 4 bosses and the final boss); I already lost once to the last boss and almost threw the game out the window. You'd think since it's a remake they could have at least added a save point in that version. You also get about 9 different airships, so that might make it the best FF game.

Can't argue with you about Super Mario RPG though.

I totally agree about 8, but still really liked it anyways! Everything outside of the mechanics was great to me. Pretty amazing I played through that whole game just being mad every time I had to collect those fucking cards.

Anybody here playing the game? What did they do wrong with the numbers?

Dead silence after CHOCOLINA is another stark reminder Ryan isn't around anymore :(

Asking Jeff and Brad to play a game that requires patience might not have been the best plan. Brad seems like the only guy in the office that's even remotly interested in the genre anymore but he doesn't seem any better than the others at figuring out JRPG gameplay systems.

Oh well, even if they seemed like they were in pain playing this game the entire quicklook they convinced me to buy it when I have some time to play it so yeah, I guess?

I actually think the combat seems really cool. The rest of the game, not so much.

TELL ME ABOUT THE NUMBERS!

seriously. i came to these comments expecting someone to be all bitchy at brad about how the numbers were so obvious and then explain how to find them in a condescending manner, but nooooooooooooo noone can be bothered to do so. I am disappointed in you giantbomb community.

Posted by Splodge

So, is this like a "normal" Final Fantasy game in the sense that there are a ton of different areas to discover, etc? Or is it on a linear track like FF 13?

Wish I had the patience to go back and play FF 8 :( Favorite game of my youth, but after a recent attempt to play it all I wanted was FF 13 style combat in the FF 8 world.

There's too much other nonsense going on. She's wearing a Cloud uniform from the first second and then straight into so much other religious crap while flying through space.

Dearest Lightning, wil you be my waifu for all eternity?

If they played the victory music EVERYTIME you win... I would have been way into that!

This game looks really brown and muddy...and bad.

Holy crap at the aliasing and moire at 14:13

Posted by FreakGirl

Is it just me or does someone else get kinda motion sick during the loading screen as well? O.o

Edited by Jedo

Man, do I hate these games...SO MUCH. The name pretty much outlines the entire problem: nonsensical, no grounding in reality so can't believe any of what I see, so no immersion, and the number at the end is telling you that instead of a coherent entity you get a drawn-out shallow sellout. And those never ending annoying androgynous characters...

Posted by Fairbrethees

I really like the time mechanic in Dead Rising. Haven't played 13 or 13-2 but part of me wants to play this. The rest of me thinks this is a load of donkeyskin vomspit though

Posted by DS23

blablabla dont talk bad about my jrpg blablabla you obviously dont understand the intricacies blablabla u dont even give it a chance blablabla brad seems disinterested blablabla jeff just makes fun of stuffblablablablabala

This is true sometimes, but FFXIII trilogy is just bad.

Oh crap, right. I keep forgetting about the stupid FF renumbering.

I really miss the days when we got Final Fantasy 7-Final Fantasy 10 in like 5 years and all were amazing experiences. When I actually enjoyed Final Fantasy games.

Posted by Daneian

I have a giant soft spot for FF12 but i doubt i could go back to it.

That's the only positive thing i can say about FF13.

I USED to like FF. But I find myself near the end of the game asking "why should I even care anymore?" The stories used to be better, FF13-2 was so very confusing and slow, not to mention spending 50+ MORE hours just to get the "good ending." That doesn't interest me AT ALL as a gamer; I don't have that kind of time in my schedule.

Posted by Efesell

I've been having a great time with this. Some of the best combat and difficulty FF has ever done.

Posted by Flappy

I'm still trying to figure out the perfect time to pop mine in.

Posted by Chris2KLee

Well, they made a trilogy. That has to count for something I guess.

Posted by JMan240

@addfwyn: I actually thought XII was one of the better since the polygonal transition. I liked the Baldur's Gate style combat even if it could have used a little more depth, I liked the more open areas, the hunt system was great, the summoning system was nicely streamlined, the Judges were badasses, Fran and Balthier were awesome, and even thought the story wasn't super duper interesting it was at least coherent - something the series has struggled with lately. I might not remember the story well, but I'd rather chalk that up to it being slightly less spectacular than completely nonsensical.

The constantly changing format of the games wasn't a problem when they were sticking to single releases, and gave them like 5-6 years of dev time. Now, they're doing what a lot of other JRPG devs are doing and just making arbitrary changes to a trilogy and shoveling a boatload of untested concepts into each new game. Hopefully FFXV can fix that.

I can't be arsed, Brad has this problem in every game ever. If even Jeff can't figure it out...something's just wrong.

I'm willing to bet the number was at the quest marker they refused to go look at.

You know what don't care about all the hate this series gets Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels are my favorite final fantasy games ever and Lightning alongside the new Lara Croft are my two favorite female game characters. I adore light she is fantastic.

Posted by spazmaster666

This game hasn't been given great reviews by the critics, but I'm about 10 hours in and I'm enjoying myself. Maybe I'm just too biased towards FFXIII (I enjoyed both of the the previous 2 games in the series) or maybe I just have bad taste.

Posted by mrcraggle

I'm still optimistic for FFXV. I don't know why as the entire XIII series has been an absolute train wreck and IV was a complete disaster.
