Watching Vinny play this is almost like watching a savant speedrun.

I wasn't expecting this game to look as as fun as it does. It's kinda transcendent.

Posted by ZagZagovich

This seems really fun but I won't have anyone to play it with after a few games, and if the online is laggy I might not have anyone to play with at all. Will probably pick it up on sale though, 15$ is way too much.

Posted by Hassun

So much sword throwing, tsk tsk tsk.

Posted by 2HeadedNinja

You KNOW when Vinny laughs and says "whatever" that he really has fun with a game ^^

Posted by Atwa

As cool as this looks, I think it might lose its appeal quickly.

Edited by Vuud

Looks like it has all the same problems as Samurai Gun.

If it were an arcade machine I would dump a few quarters into it, but $15? That's asking a lot.

And I still think graphics like this look lazy. So sue me.

Edited by Reisz

Who's to say which side of the screen is the right side?

Edit: Oh man, Brad is the sorest loser on the staff. So fun to watch, it's amazing how many games are mechanically flawed when Brad's isn't winning.

Edited by Aegon

Did not expect a Fiddler on the Roof reference from this game (at ~34:44).

Picking this up right now. this looks great

Posted by Parsnip

That description almost fits Revengeance quick look as well.

Posted by MeatSim

Vinny is the greatest Nidhogg player that has ever lived!

Posted by TheLegendOfMart

Good lord Brad needs to stop growling and sucking air in through his teeth when he gets beat, its freaking annoying.

Edited by Mezmero

Alright. We'll call it a draw.

Posted by GigEdict

Best way to beat the "run for it" style: just sit there with your sword out not attacking. High stance will stop divekicks unless they are at an extreme angle and low stance will kill rollers.

Unprofessional Friday could use this.

This quick look is amazing! Too bad I have like 40 games in my backlog right now :-(

I'd say it's worth triple that, considering the replay value is infinite, as with any competitive game.

No offense, and the game looks well made - but this would be fun for like a few hours tops.

edit: nvm this looks rad.

Posted by TehJedicake

Why do they think it's cowardly that Vinny was just running to the left instead of fighting... that's the point of the game..

I LOVE watching Brad get frustrated by Vinny's antics

Posted by yeliwofthecorn

With this and the recent Samurai game, the need for a CBSi tournament has never been greater.

Cool idea. Bit pricey for what it is and not a fan of the art style.

Might pick it up in a future sale when I know I can get some friends to buy it too.

Edited by thebunnyhunter

So satisfying to see Vinny wipe the floor with Brad

Posted by gbrading

Looks like a really cool game to play local multiplayer. Great animations for such a minimalist graphical style.

V-bomb~!

all i know is now there needs to be a Nidhogg X Samurai Gunn

Edited by darkest4

This game looks awesome if you have friends to play it with. Seems like they would sell a lot more if they lowered the price a bit.

Brad tried to cheat with his pause screen tactics and he still lost to Vinny.

Posted by BaconGames

If anyone wants to try out a game that is basically a mix of Nidhogg and Super Pole Riders, I recommend Foiled! (exclamation is part of the title). I don't know anything if a future version will be different but even the 2D competitive fencing game space isn't locked down.

awesome QL! Vinny is king of 'hogg speedruns

I might anger some folks with this, but Nidhogg > Samurai Gunn

I wasn't really looking forward to this one as it seemed so similar to Samaurai Gunn from the trailers, just 2 player instead of potentially 4. But yeah, this is like everything that game does but way better.

Fast-paced gameplay that doesn't seem unfairly chaotic. The ability to employ lots of different strategies, instead of just sort of fight or hide. Fantastic music. Super fluid animation. And minimalist pixel art that actually enhances the stages/gameplay better than other styles could.

Well fucking done.

Posted by jmood88

The music played on the cloud stage is great.

Game looks fun. Too bad that the dev's kind of a Kickstarter scammer. A bit surprised they didn't mention that in the QL, actually.

So glad this is finally out. I loved playing it at trade shows and was concerned it was never going to come out.

Edited by Curious_George

This just costs too much for what it is

Agreed. For $15 it should have a lot more maps than this. The core game looks fun but no more than say Samurai Gunn or Towerfall, both of which seem much more content rich than this at the same pricepoint.

Posted by fisk0

It didn't look all that interesting from the stuff I had seen before release, but this quick look made it seem fucking amazing. Prince of Persia/Karateka combat (and animations!) with two players, and the fantastic music did it's share too. I'm happy this isn't local only like Samurai Gun was, because unlike the staff, the situation where I have a bunch of people in the house playing games on the same PC has never ever come up. The single player seems decent as well, so, yeah, I'm impressed by this.

This needs to be the final game at UFGT this year. Mystery game tournament always brings the hype.

Agreed. Keits is good about choosing games though, so we'll see. He always bring the 'good' stuff to the mystery game tournament.

Also, on a side note, if no one else has mentioned it, Nidhogg means "Corpse Tearer" so...thats pretty awesome, right?

Some mythology website, although after some other research, Níðhöggr could also mean "The striker in the dark". Either meaning works well for this game. I'm sure it depends on which translation of the name you use.

Edited by Dan_CiTi

Great game, I think playing single player teaches you strategies like spacing your divekicks and using the high-mid-low sword stuff in more ways as well (high sword for anti-air.) Also, just the straight sword fighting clashing is just done so well.

Posted by Melos

This is a great spectator game, and I'm sure it's a blast to play, but being the cheap-ass gamer that I am, I have to agree with those who think $15 -- even $12 -- feels pricey for the product.

Also, that DnB music in the castle level has a serious Toonami style going on.

New favorite battlecry: "NIDHOGG!"

Posted by Fuwano

This looks like so much fun but with nobody to play with locally I'll be passing on it. Glad to see something this cool get released though.

Nid means shameful, hateful, envious or malicious, and höggr means to stab or strike (both of these words are still in some use in modern Nordic languages). The other meanings seems to be more about the dragon's role in mythology rather than it's actual name - it did, according to the Icelandic Edda - suck the blood from the dead.
