And yet American football is more complex and subsequently tedious. I don't like 'footy' either, but Jeff's dislike for it is about as obtuse as any other of his strong dislikes, so it fits!

Perhaps all it needs is physicality, I'm pretty sure he likes RedCard, as do I, it being the only football game I've seriously played. Then again he's the world's best Blitz player, so, there's that going against this whole 'footy' thing. And of course he's said on many occasions throughout these sports QL's, that he prefers those snappy arcade sport games. So I have no idea where I was going with this, now I feel dumb.

Also I can tell he was trying hard not to show any enthusiasm at the concept of some Pooyan music.

I don't get why Jeff is hating on soccer. The soccer videogames are boring IMO, but the sport itself is great, greater than american football aka "handegg" will ever be. There is a reason why football/soccer is played worldwide, except for america where they still use miles and yards and pounds,,,and play ice hockey lol. In the eyes of the rest of the world, america is the strange fellow.

Baseball and basketball are great sports too, don't get me wrong.

I dislike American Football as much as the next guy but leave Ice Hockey out of it atleast they dont have to pause for everytime they do something or for ads like how am I supposed to take your sport seriously when you stop play for a ad break.

Have you guys ever watched a game of am. football? Seriously, there are not commercial breaks after every play. I admit, there are way too many commercials in football, but not as many as you suggest. At most, breaks between plays can be 40 seconds.

And even with its breaks, football will always be more exciting than soccer to me. To you, it's not. That's fine. It's personal preference. But don't pretend you know the first thing about American football because I can guarantee you don't.

I think the correlation between the dislike of a sport and the dislike of a video game for that sport makes no sense, since it's a totally different activity.

Just like you don't need to be a city planner to enjoy SimCity or martial artist for Street Fighter.

This Quick Look is hilarious, but why do americans usually hate football (soccer) so much?

From my view, Europeans hate football (gridiron) a whole lot more than we hate soccer. It's more disinterest from here, but a lot of Europeans seem to downright hate our football.

No matter how good PES mechanics are, i will still never buy it until they get team.

But the mechanics are terrible, this series is not got much much legs left. I felt FIFA 13 gave them the kill shot this year. Might still sell in Japan though

FIFA fanboy alert. Skilled players can do amazing things with the mechanics of PES 2013.

Yeah run in 8 directions, terrible collision technology and most of all no Ultimate Team or Pro Clubs. Pro Clubs is what made me swirth from PES me and 6 friends have our club with our own name we start in Division 10 and have a season after 10 games you can get relegated, promoted and even win the cup for that division that goes in the clubs trophy case, every 2nd weekend can enter a knock out tournament. I like controlling the whole team but there is something next level of controlling 1 player on the field and having to work with your team to win.

Meh... it's no Road to World Cup '98.

I loved that game. Apart from FIFA10 that I picked up for PS2 for the price of a hot dog it is the only football game I've ever owned. RtWC98 was one hell of a game. I still remember that the menu music was "Blur - Song 2"

@ThePickle: The whole world thinks that throwing game (for some unknown reason you call 'foot'ball) is ridiculous, not just Europeans.

Posted by dr_mantas

HA! Arguing about sports! And about sports video games, even!

Even about how much effort and time our loveable buffoons should put into understanding them!

Oh, arguing about that makes me laugh! Never change, crazy sports fans.

Jeff and Vinny, keep on keeping on.

The big secret: it's called football because it was evolved from rugby football which evolved from association football.

Call it ridiculous all you want, it's insanely fun to watch and follow.

It also has the distinction of being the last soccer game I've played. I was born in Europe, but I've been thoroughly Americanized and watch (American) football every Sunday instead. Something about RtWC just resonated, though.

@df: They've been pretty open about their QLs when it comes to sports games. It's been going on forever now. They did the same treatment to NHL 13, Madden 13, NCAA Football 13 and NBA 2k13. And they were doing the same last year. You can get your in-depth coverage somewhere else.

*looks up controls* X was actually the shoot button? I could have sworn they were accidentally pressing lob from the way players lofted those shots. Maybe that's just a common football occurrence.

It's a common 'football game' occurence is you hold the shoot button down to long.

@kingando420: Was not aware of that! Good to know.

Hahaha loved this QL. I'm totally with Jeff making fun of a game with sub-par UI and mechanics.

I love football, and I think this Quick Look is hilarious. Jeff and Vinny not getting football yet still playing it is really funny. It's not like their lack of enthusiasm for football (a) changes how you feel about it or (b) is going to negatively impact the sport in any way. I'm pretty sure it'll remain a massively popular, multi-billion pound industry.

So chill, you butthurt babies. Jeez.

What language do they speak in Europe? Jokes, it was an exciting time in Football with that beast Brazilian team,

Watched it? I even played it in real life against classmates. I know the basic rules.

We in europe don't have this false pretense of having a superior sport, we just play every sport and form an opinion on it.

Like how baseball is pretty fun to play and basketball too, I didn't like american football too much because IMO better sports exist, like how baseball is more fun and engaging to play.

We play just about every sport (don't think we have any major cricket leagues) here too. I don't know if you're implying that Americans consider football the superior sport, I can say that's not entirely true. While it's far and away the most popular sport here, a lot of people have the same issues you guys take with it. Yes, we have our fair share of soccer opponents, but we have as many baseball, football, hockey, and basketball opponents.

Just out of curiosity, what position did you play?

Soccer/football is a pretty dull sport if you're not invested in it or understand the rules. I love it though. Glad I chose Fifa over PES considering PES still looks kinda rough (especially animation wise).

I am American and I am in COMPLETE 100% acknowledgement that "football" is the totally accurate and correct term for the sport. However, I still say soccer to europeans because I know for a fact that they will whine about it, and it makes me laugh that they get upset over that simple thing.

My budget hasn't allowed for much sports games recently, but I used to play W11 all the time when I was younger. Purely from a production standpoint, I have to say I find PES miles and miles beyond the NBA, NFL and NHL outings. Looks nice. Also, being able to play with a soccer ball from 1900 is awesome.
