There is something seriously fucked up about the fact that I come to GB and then have to watch videos through youtube because the GB player hitches like a motherfucker.

@roughneck117: even youtube hitches like a bastard for me I even have the fastest net con you can buy in my area no less

Fantastic QL, now make Breaking Brad: Spelunky happen.

Posted by shodan2020

This game looks great. This is also probably one of the most entertaining quick looks i've seen in quite awhile. Pissing off the shopkeeper in co-op was hilarious!

Posted by Sarkahn

I'd love to see a Lantern Run style feature with the guys going through this game co-op.

amazing Speed Bat technology implemented at the beginning of the video

It'd be awesome if, for once, Jeff was not negative and critical of 95% of the games he plays or has ever touched.

I cannot count the number of classic games that are universally acclaimed that he says were never good.

I NEED THIS GAME NOW!

Yeah, there's a definite similarity to the co-op of these two games, between the powerups, the time limit, and the survival strategies being simple to do but hard to always keep in mind.

This games visual theme reminds me a bit of Rick Dangerous on the Amiga.

Oh Lord, it's like the successor to the Lantern Run. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

'Universally acclaimed' isn't really correct if there's a clear group of people who don't enjoy it.

I can't stand, for example, the original Metroid game, because it has no map, has monotonous gameplay, and you pretty much -need- to shoot every single ceiling block in the game to find a secret passage that leads to a suit that you need to complete the game at all. It's a pretty terrible gameplay mechanic! Not to mention how you were expected to take damage constantly

That said, people still consider it a 'universally acclaimed game'. That doesn't mean it's not okay to point out its flaws and how unenjoyable you found the experience to be, regardless of its fanbase. In fact, if anything, it's a good thing when a reviewer does that!

Haha. Patrick, showing his gaming knowledge right off the bat - "So it is a Roguelike, through and through." Yea Patrick, it is a Roguelike.....I guess Super Mario Brothers was a Roguelike. What did you hear the word Roguelike when Dave was playing Dwarf Fortress and just had to use it in a sentence?

Seriously, what is with the dissecting of this game. It almost sounded like a farce....like if I spent an hour dissecting and exaggerating the complexities of Rayman....

You're both quite wrong, actually. The platforming aspect has nothing to do with it being considered a roguelike.

DId I say it didnt have some of those elements in there? Dont think so. Just saying that this isnt super original and the 2 of them were wetting themselves trying to one up each other on different colorful adjectives that they think describes the game. Then you resort to namecalling? Thats awesome man. Really and truly is. Well done.

You don't understand, if he dies, he'll lose all that progress!!! That one level he got through!!!!

Posted by BankyEdwards015

@gladspooky: No, I understand that, but even Patrick states in the QL that the great part of these types of games is that you will be right back here in a few anyways. Plus you dont come into a QL looking to actually progress in the game in a meaningful way. These are ment to show what the game is. Have fun with it Brad

It's too bad they ditched the pixel art style from the PC version. I feel like that had so much more character and charm. Still, it's been a while since Binding of Isaac, I might be up for another rougelike.

I think Roguelike is a proper descriptor for this game, it is a side scrolling roguelike - the randomly generated dungeons, loot and enemies, and that you're constantly going deeper (seems like there are actually 10 levels, like in strict roguelikes as well - 3 for each setting + 1 "special"/hell?) are all aspects of Roguelikes. Unless you're super strict and it necessarily has to be top down, using ANSI art and navigated with keyboard, in which case pretty much only Rogue and clones, rather than games that are inspired by the gameplay would count.

Yeah, there's been a surge of great quicklooks recently, though I think the total chaos and randomness (fitting for an Roguelike) makes this one of my favorites.

Gameplay? Spelunky is inspired by the gameplay of the original Rogue? So it's a menu-based RPG? What are you people blathering about? Not only has everyone forgotten what "Roguelike" means, now they're forgetting basic terms.

Spelunky is my favorite bullet hell because the music looks good.

I did describe the parts of the gameplay that Spelunky was inspired by. And Rogue wasn't menu based.

Sure it's not an top down, tile-based and turn-based RPG (it's not the first Roguelike to change the persective, drop the leveling up-part, nor the first to be in real-time), but are those really the defining aspects of an Roguelike? Not the "you have to get to the bottom floor in a (10 levels deep) randomly generated dungeon, retrieve an object and get back again, and if you die along the way, you have to start all over again"?

Wouldn't you say games like Bioshock and Deus Ex are inspired by the style started by System Shock - System Shock-likes if you will, despite the fact that they don't use sprite based enemies or that the crosshair is centered on the screen rather than something you can move around without affecting the camera? Does these differences make them entirely different games despite the core concepts being the same? I see pretty much the same relationship and differences between Spelunky and Rogue.

No it's not just you. He also reminds me of Captain Olimar

...I think this game looks FUN... but I think the whole "limiting your time in a level by spawning in a ghost" aspect is a pretty big turn off for me.

You can actually turn off the tambourine and bell sounds if you want in the settings. Sometime that noise does get in the way of amazing FF music.

That's exactly what I think when I watch him play. He's really too worried about looking bad or playing bad. It's just a game!

Picked up the PC original of this game and I was hooked immedietly! I hope we get an HD Splunky for PC, I'd pick it up on Steam in a heartbeat!

You don't "retrieve an object and go back again" in Spelunky. Also, the games play entirely differently. Elements of Spelunky are inspried by Rogue. Like the modular levels, the level "feelings" and the perma-death. But it does not play like a Roguelike and therefore is not a Roguelike. You know what game it's more like? Spelunker. A platformer.

Protip: Throw rocks, skulls or any other debris you can find into the path of the arrow traps to set them off without getting hurt. Then go pick up the arrow and throw it at enemies.

Glad the XBLA game turned out good. I loooove the PC game.

3 man quicklooks are good fun. Looks like the type of game I'd like to watch people play but would probably be not so amusing to me playing solo. Woulda liked to have seen them do a deatmatch without a billion bombs, looked like it coulda been pretty strategic and fun.

Instead of getting into the nerdiest of nerd arguments that was ever nerded, I'm watching this Quick Look again.
