I'm pretty stoked myself. I have $750 in Visa gift cards from this last Xmas that I threw in a drawer and forgot about in anticipation of a new console launch. One or both consoles will be in my living room at some point, to be sure.

Better yet, probably announcing that Square, Triangle, Circle, and Cross will be playable characters in the next DLC for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (or PSXASBR as the kids say).

Due to having played all my multi-platform games on Xbox 360 over the last 7 years, I'm a little bias despite not trying to be. I only really did so because Sony delayed the PS3 in Europe, after mostly playing PlayStation games since the original console.

That said, I'm pretty excited about this. I feel a little bad that Microsoft aren't getting theirs out first despite all previous signs to the contrary. I've moved over to the PC lately anyway, but I expect to do a lot more console gaming again when the next generation starts. At least there are two dogs left in this race - competition should push them both to be better. I'll get whatever's good.

If you sit your PS3 on top of your PS4, definitely.

The future of Playstation is that Sony is shifting focus away from the console and into the water delivery businesses. Do you need water delivered to your home or office? They'll have very competitive rates. Ask about the free dispenser with Bravia TV purchase offer from Best Buy.

Might stick to my PC for current gaming needs, and buy this console after it ran its course, just like I'm going to do with the PS3 to catch up on the exclusives. Seriously, now-a-days, PC is the superior platform, period. Of course, if the PS4 is reasonably priced with great features, I might change my mind. Definitely no getting a WIIU and I might pass on the newest Xbox as well, since I never owned a Microsoft console anyway.

What you fail to realise is that with operating systems for actual computers they have to do more than just run games that are programmed for their specific hardware, you actually get better performance from the same hardware on a console than on a pc because consoles are free to use all their power on the game. So in actuality what you have is a console that is probably at least 2-3+ graphics card generations faster performing given the same spec.

The actual x86/64 architecture in a modern PC is also an outdated one but unfortunately it's the case of "why fix something that isn't broken" and the adoption rate / manufacture of different architectures in the tech business is currently too low to consider change on top of the fact that nearly all modern operating systems (windows, mac, linux) are all designed around manipulating the x86/64 cpu architecture and would need to be programmed, to some extent, almost from scratch. Xbox360 and Playstation 3 both have architectures that are not x86/64 and both perform better with the same hardware because of it.

@DJJoeJoe: They can't announce the next Uncharted until the PS4 is announced, which is why I think they will announce it along with, or soon after the PS4. Its possible Naughty Dog has multiple teams, one working on Last of Us, one on Uncharted 4.

UC is such a flagship franchise for Sony, it would be a system seller for them with the new console launch.

yeah it was Naughty Dog's b-team that made Uncharted 3, and that turned out GREAT. Except it was actually a huge turd, and I would hope they don't make that mistake again.

Uncharted 3 was fine, it just wasn't a huge leap compared to the last one.  Unfortunately, that makes your game a failure these days.

Not really, I have a PC with a 5850 gpu and a quad core AMD CPU, I wish people would stop talking about gaming PC's like everyone has the top of the line systems.

If the new consoles are cheaper than a new CPU and GPU I will get them instead, console exclusives, not having to worry about mucking around with graphics settings and not having to worry about keeping up with the jones with the GPUs being released each year.

im running a 2600k at 4.5ghz and 2 7970`s overclocked. so yes, there is no need to keep up with the jones" just spend the money the first time and your good for a long time

That's exactly what I am talking about, how much did that PC cost you?

You will feel inadequate will your PC in a years time, as soon as your PC can no longer handle MAX settings, with the UE4 games coming out.

That would be cool, if Naughty Dog was able to launch that game along side the other game they are doing right now (Last of Us) which is basically the same game but different. Seeing as that game has a release date of May next year though... and Uncharted ain't even announced...

Bring it on. Not because I want a PS4 necessarily, but because I want the PS4 to be good so it pushes Microsoft to stop being so fucking arrogant and lazy like they have become in the last few years of the 360.

Regardless, this may be the last stop for me. Attribute it to getting older or whatever, but I'm not liking the trends I've seen with consoles in the last few years. I may be done buying new stuff, if not for good, then anywhere near launch. I'll wind up becoming one of those people who bought a 360 in 2011.

This was literally the first comment I read after I saw Jeff's Twitter post about the PS4 having the same rear-touch controls that the Vita has.

http://www.edge-online.com/news/playstation-4-revealed/

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware. Sony has already earned an enormous amount of goodwill among studios working with PS4 development hardware. Privately, Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup than PS3.

We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Both platforms are driven by eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz, with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilising a more capable solution in AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture, alongside the so-called ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip.

It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

Ultimately, the performance differences between the two consoles will have as much bearing on multiplatform releases as the differences between PS3 and 360 – very little – but Sony will be expecting big-budget firstparty releases such as the PS4 Uncharted sequel to demonstrate its console’s superiority.
