Main character moved to the US when he was younger before returning to Hong Kong, which explains his accent.

@tracert: There are some Cantonese-speaking characters in the game - though I'm not sure how many. The majority of the ambient dialogue is also in Cantonese.

@Begilerath: Apparently, the majority of the characters were voiced by people who were born, raised or are living in Hong Kong. So their accents are pretty believable.

What exactly happened to this game and what sort of revamps did it undergo? When it was crushed by Activision, did they go back and retool a bunch of this game, or did they just find a new publisher and keep going? I'm worried that it was canned by Activision for looking like shit, and so I don't know if a new publisher gave them the time or the resources to retool and make it better, or if they're trying to put it out now to recoup as much money as they can.

No, it's a sequel to True Crime. I'm pretty sure this one won't have random battles, leveling up, and 2000 different minigames including fully fleshed out golf and snooker. I could be wrong though.

Done and done...I loved the True Crime games and it looks like Square Enix is taking this to the next level.

Also love that the trailer v/o is basically the female answer to the Rockstar guy.

Looks like a damn good time. Hand to hand combat is always missing from these kinds of games so I'm glad to see it prominently featured.

The fact there are side stuff as both a Triad and as a Cop makes me very happy. Was worried about this game when it was revealed it was initially not developed as a True Crime game at all.

This sounds an awful lot like Rockstar's recent marketing with their Design & Tech videos. Not that that's a bad thing.

This is fully open world, right? Cautiously optimistic if so. Though I sort of wish they had a full Chinese voice cast with subtitles. Really come to appreciate the Japanese voice acting in Yakuza.

Good God, there is a lot going on in this game. I just hope it can balance all of these varying mechanics and not feature a lot of different types of gameplay that all kinda suck. In any case, this is starting to resemble the Chinese (speaking for the setting) rendition of a Yakuza game, just much better.

It has a lot to live up to to be better than Yakuza 4.

I like that the narrator just dropped that line and left it at that. Extra hilarious.

This game looks like a weird mix of old John Woo style and new John Woo films. I'm still not sure it's going to avoid being a hot mess, but it seems weirdly intriguing.

Yeah but it is set in Hong Kong, English is still on of their official languages and most people there speak both it and Chinese.

If that game an wrap all those mechanics together then I am super psyched for that game.

@mrfizzy: I'm from Hong Kong; realistically, people's English is not that great there. So it's kind of jarring to hear characters speaking perfect English.

Eh, the gameplay wasn't particularly great in Yakuza 4. Even the combat that resides at the centre is clunky and doesn't flow very well, and the numerous piss easy random battles that occur was detrimental to the overall brutality and style of the fighting because how often it all came up.

The story was enjoyable, though highly melodramatic and convoluted. Suffice to say, I really don't think Sleeping Dogs will have to try that hard to top Yakuza 4.

I don't agree. I really enjoyed Yakuza 4's story, especially with its melodrama and the complex (I wouldn't call it convoluted) nature of the plot. And I had no problem with taking out the trash on the numerous random thugs. I really enjoyed the combat system. There was very little that I didn't like about the game, and while Sleeping Dogs may be a good or even great game, it will be amazing if it can match the enjoyment I had with Yakuza 4.

Well yeah, it's the Triads, but I think we're saying it's like they borrowed a lot of game mechanics common to the Yakuza franchise for this title (dating, minigames, arena battles, dynamic battlegrounds). Not an exact copy, but they're taking some pointers from them - they are bringing a lot of other features together with racing, gunplay and character customization. But when the karaoke scene popped up, it was enough to make me do a double take and say "Hang on 'ere"

I don't know about this. I kind of liked the original Hong Kong setting, and I liked the original game set in LA (True Crime: NY was garbage), and the melee action looks good, but something about the shooting seems...off. And it always gets to me when games set in foreign places still have everyone speak English. I kind of hope that the Chinese language is an option, but I know that's probably not feasible. I would say that I'm...cautiously optimistic about this one.

Oh, man, I can use things just like I would in a REAL street fight!? I'll learn to finally make punk bitches suck it down!

Also, if I can do that "motorcycle slide into car that explodes while I shoot from the ground" thing from the end of the trailer whenever I want in the game, this is the best game, and I hope that technology finds its way into Just Cause 3.

Not necessarily a bad thing creativity wise, just wondering how this will turn out.

I hope it's more that direction, because that's what interests me most in this game. I just hope they clean up some things about the game before August such as the sliding the characters do when fighting and some of the jerky animations such as snapping into cover.

@Larsa: Seriously.

The game looks like it has dramatically improved in the short time United Front has had working on it. The demo from Pax East 2012, doesn't come close to the level of transitional animation I am seeing.

All in all, this game bares a strong resemblance to the Yakuza series. I just hope it interests people into either game.

And, Karaoke all day.
