Even though it was only the cut scenes, this trailer was pretty good.

I'll still like VII the best, but Odin in VIII is probably my favorite PS1-era summon. Which made that fight against Seifer so much better.

Patrick, go play through FFVIII again and please try to explain to me how the story isn't anything but nonsense, and the gameplay is anything but tedious or incredibly broken.

Fanboys of this game do an incredibly poor job of explaining what is actually good aboutit aside from it being one of the black sheep Final Fantasies and therefore obviously way better than that evil mainstream FFVII.

@siroptimusprime: I personally never owned a PS1. My experience is with the PSN port of a port. Those 90s FMV cut scenes I never got to experience as a N64 owner are glorious.

VII remains my fave just because it was the first RPG I ever played - didn't even really know games could have deep stories or character development until then, and it restarted my love of reading and writing, too. Can't help but let it have it's place in my heart for all that. VIII and IX were both great, too, loved them each for different reasons.

IX needs to really be on Steam sooner or later as well, and they all need to give you access to the Workshop. Some of those filters for emulated versions are quite lovely, though I guess I can just research to see if I can add them anyway.

FF9 is probably the better game but the card game in ff8 was pretty dope. Way better than the shitty one that was in ff9.

Love you Scoops but I think you misspelled worst. 7, 9, Tactics and 5+6 with load times are all better mechanically and don't have a shoehorned, unearned love story.

Enjoy sitting in random battles drawing magic for 10 minutes per spell. Enjoy sitting in random battles waiting for GFs to finish their 45-second animations. Enjoy watching the bad writers sap out all of the series' goofy Japanese charm to replace it with miserably failing to capture teen angst, unrequited love and sibling rivalry. Enjoy the birth of buckles, belts, insufferable j-pop songs and every other trope that has essentially buried the Final Fantasy franchise.

All my opinion, of course, but try playing the game now that you're no longer 14. You can admire the game for being an attempt to do something significantly different from what came before it but it's a bad story, a bad game and a bad Final Fantasy game.

I agree 100%, this is my favorite PS1 FF game as I had 0 interest in FFIX, and whileFFVII may be revolutionary is quite inferior in every way to FFVIII, IMHO of course.

Final Fantasy VIII is my second-favorite Final Fantasy game, next to IX. I am glad to see this on Steam, even though I already own it through the PSN store. I think I even have my old discs from the original PC version in a closet somewhere.

Still my favorite. The PC version was a little janky, but that's the one I had because I never had a PSone. What a great era for RPGs...

IX is a lot better in gameplay and general fantasy atmosphere, though I really liked the unique feel, characters, and story of VIII. It was just so dang magical for me. I freakin' don't understand all the love for VII honestly, and that came out right when I would've appreciated those games since I was like eight or nine at the time. The giant club hands and blocky character models just never appealed to me, even then.

That reminds me...I bought Vagrant Story on PSN a while ago but haven't ever booted it up. I hear only good things...

@mildmolasses: Agreed! 8 was a huge disappointment for me, almost turned me off the whole series, and i'd been a diehard since the NES. If IX hadn't been so amazing i probably wouldn't even have bothered with X or XII.

I am not falling for your troll bait Patrick! ;) Clearly 7 was the best, followed by 9 (ZIdane is the best main character of the three though) and then 8. I did like the love angle of 8 and the catchy song ("was it real or just my fantasy") but the junction system, having to steal your summons - and if you miss your opportunity you're fucked - , the fact that enemies leveled with you, and, lastly, that tool Squall; fuck you squall you ass hat depressed butt hurt jerk. There were too many fundamental flaws for it to eclipse either 9 or 7. 9 felt like a classic final fantasy crystal chronicles era game with all of the classes perfectly represented. 9 had the best graphics of the 3 (which makes sense) and had a fun spirit about it. 9 also had the best main character in Zidane and who doesn't love Vivi? WHO F'ING DOESN'T!?! 7 nailed the epic scope, the badass main boss (though 9 also had a great one who was just plain batshit crazy) , the amazingly fun Materia system, the ridiculous amount of side quests, the memorable cast (AEIRTH!!!) and the atmosphere. It's why we keep going back to 7; it gave us modern day final fantasy games.
