#Teammajesticdeer

This has a really cool look to it, but hearing that it's procedurally generated gives me pause.

I really like the voxel style 2d/3d look of this. Not sure how I feel about a procedurally generated adventure without knowing more about the gameplay.

I was SO sold until they said it was procedurally generated. It looked like a capy game, but the strength in those has always been the mood, which they clearly slaved to get right down to the last detail.

Yah man, I was super hyped thinking this is exactly what retro inspired games should be. But the strength of the best platformers around lies in meticulously crafted levels. Procedurally generated levels lack that special something.

Are you guys really tired of procedural generation, or do you mean that you're tired of "procedural generation as a design/work multiplier"? I might say I really like it as a way to inject emergent behavior into an already tight design, but I also agree that we're seeing too many early access "endless wandering" simulators. Not sure if I'm ready to call this exactly that, either...

Deers are the worst creatures on Earth. I will not buy a deer supporting game until the deers pay up for all the cars they have run into.

@morningstar: The way animals die that get killed by hunters is generally a lot more humane than how most animals we eat are treated and killed. It's far less humane to buy meat at a grocery store than it is to go hunt a deer and eat it. So if anything, with respect to eating meat, the hunters are more humane and kind than the average joe that goes to the grocery store for his meat.

Of course if you are just hunting for the sake of sport and just let the animal go to waste, then you are kind of a piece of shit. Although to play devil's advocate, maybe by killing that deer and just leaving it there that allowed a starving wolf, that was too weak to hunt, get food for itself and its cubs. Then your "dick move" actually ended up saving the lives of a bunch of wolves. But then there are too many wolves and they eat too many deer so there are no deer left which in turn makes it so most of the wolves die off because there is no more food for them, etc. etc.

Disclosure: I have never hunted before.

Is it bad that I can't take this seriously? It seems like something an MFA student would come up with. Like they think they are going to recreate Bambi in game form except they also want you to shoot fireballs and stomp on giant monsters. Or maybe this trailer is just bad. Dunno, I just felt like laughing at the mix of super emotional music and oldschool platforming.

Aesthetically and conceptually, I absolutely love it. I hope the story and themes live up to their promise. But at the same time, from a gameplay standpoint, I'm not sure I see the significance of casting you as a deer when he seems the same as other platforming protagonists in terms of abilities.

@asherrd: I agree with this stance completely. Hunting for food is fine. Humans have done that ever since humans have existed. Unless you are a vegetarian (which is a valid thing to be, but I am not one), then you cannot oppose hunting for the sake of gathering food.

Hunting to eat - fine. Hunting to "show off" how "Tough" you are? Stupid and infantile. So someone can kill a deer - whoop-de-do. How does that prove how strong they are? That deer never had a chance, except maybe in running away.

Killing a bear with a sword? THAT would prove how strong someone was! That would involve danger. I don't think anyone should do it, but it would actually prove that the hunter was tough, because bears are strong and using a sword puts you in range of them being able to maul you. If someone manages to kill a bear with a melee weapon, I wouldn't like it, but I would actually respect their strength. Killing a deer or a moose with a high-powered rifle? That proves nothing.

Yeah i'm also put off by the procedural stuff, doesn't this style of game live or die by the creativity of the level designer?
If it's done by the other "procedural" method of pre-designed chunks stitched together randomly, that usually leads to repetition.

What a journey the trailer took me on; "Cool concept!", "Oh, more pixel art...", "Maybe it's hand-craft...nevermind.", "Let's just open up Steam and check anyway.", "Haha, $15?". This trend of indie games skating by on just an idea then taking the easiest route possible for every other aspect of game design is disheartening.

@morningstar: A good hunter gives his/her prey the best death an animal can ask for. He/she can give a deer an instant, painless death. In an environment in which a deer would likely be killed by predators, die slowly of disease, or starve, a clean death is a gift.

I will also say that bow hunting is majorly fucked up.

Not to imply that I know, but I wonder if people are underestimating how difficult it is to make a good procedurally generated game. I'm not sure it's the shortcut around manual level design that some seem to think.
