Personally, I don't give two toots if the plot is realistic or not. What I'm seeing here is an interesting invasion story being told in a game that sounds like it's mixing my most favorite title EVAR (Freedom Force) with one of the most interesting sequences from MW2.
Obviously, I'm not expecting the best bloody thing ever, but I'll be damned if it doesn't pique my curiosity!

Why does it matter if the whole near future scenario is impossible, it's a video game, people. I'll wait for some actual gameplay before writing this off.

Great trailer and hopefully the game will be able to impress too, not writing it off just yet

Huh.

Pretty scary trailer.

Sure it'll never happen for any number of reasons, but it doesn't have to be plausible to touch on current day fears.

Anyway, really well constructed trailer, but no gameplay footage, so I refuse to give a shit about this game until I get me some. Hopefully at E3.

Some of that footage looked like a lawsuit waiting to happen but hey, if your not bending the rules, your not trying hard enough.

Honestly though, the apparent effort put into this trailer gives me hope that it won't be complete trash.

The use of the recent killing of South Korean sailors in game advertisement is just downright tasteless, and the scenario is absolutely stupid.  I'm supposed to suspend disbelief, I know, but not by the neck until dead.  Really says something when you can make a story that makes even less sense than MW2.

In the future. It's explained pretty well, actually. Basically they invade a lot of asian countries as well, and they have Korea, Japan, etc. Japan especially makes them an economic powerhouse.
Also, they think that the US will never recover from the current recession (in game fiction. In reality, it is getting better)

@YukoAsho: Seriously! I know Koreans who are legitimately scared that there's going to be a war, and they want to stick it in a trailer for this absolutely ridiculous premise for a game? Of all the countries to go "Japan 1940's" style, it's certainly not North Korea, it's not in their ideology or within their capability.

In fairness,  we don't know what Jong-un is like, ideologically. Juche was only created after Korea was split, so the self-sufficiency therein may only apply in hermit-state conditions. I see no reason why, if North Korea was able to expand, it wouldn't. That's not against Juche, to my knowledge (not to mention, they tried it before).
You're totally right about their capabilities, though. They'd be smashed, immediately.

Using the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan to promote a game is pretty fucking low.

The way I've heard it, Jong-Un is more timid than his father. I understand the point about Juche, however the  peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula under a communist banner defies well, every common sense idea about North Korea. I understand that your point about Jong-Un being a wildcard is valid, but how could North Korea get the upper hand in reunification? Even if they had a thousand nukes that's a quicker way to a nuclear war, not peace. And their nukes as they are now are so massive that deploying them is a logistical nightmare.

@CreativeColossi:  There's also the matter of China, who stands to have its own economy endangered should a war erupt on the Korean peninsula.  The last thing they want is a bunch of impoverished North Korean refugees running north into their country.

Yep never seen this scenario before...except for World in Conflict, MW2, Red Alert 2, Turning Point, etc.

Also I find it really hard to believe that Japan would just roll over for North Korea, the US military would be that ineffectual, and that the rest of the world seems to have nothing to say about this. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far guys.

I must admit that I had not heard of Jong-un's timidity. Perhaps this would make him more open to reform (or vulnerable to coup)? But we agree on the military side of things. There's no way that North Korea could take on the South and the US, alone. Moreover, I think even China would stay out of it if it came to an invasion; afterall, just the Cheonan incident rocked their conviction.

If North Korea was determined to invade, as in this video, China would either:
  • back North Korea and become the enemy of the United States (bad idea!) or
  • take the hit to the economy and live with a unified (South controlled) Korea
If neither leads to a stable situation in the short run, not fighting the most powerful nation on Earth would seem like the better choice.
But as has already been said, the entire premise is ridiculous.

They certainly wouldn't back North Korea, our economies are so tied together that we'd both get screwed, and a unified capitalist Korea (South unified) means a land trading partner hopefully much stronger and much more cooperative than the North ever was.

But yeah it's just all just a ride on the crazy express.

The fact that this trailer and game are making people actually discuss real world politics and  possible scenarios on a video game website must mean SOMETHING. It's pretty fascinating.

What a stupid fuckin' game.  South Korea isn't gonna take
over the world.  Are they serious?  LOL... And nobody is
gonna pass a fucking satellite over the USA.  They will
blast nukes over Kansas airspace. That's the only way
it can get the EMP effect coast to coast.

And if somebody did that to us, North Korea & Iran would
be nuked back to the stone age. Although the US would
be pretty much destroyed at that point.

For a more realistic scenario, read "One Second After".

"North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world. It has an estimated active duty military force of up to 1.2 million personnel, compared to about 680,000 in the South. Military spending is estimated at as much as a quarter of GNP, with up to 20% of men ages 17-54 in the regular armed forces. North Korean forces have a substantial numerical advantage over the South (around 2 to 1) in several key categories of offensive weapons--tanks, long-range artillery, and armored personnel carriers. The North has one of the world's largest special operations forces, designed for insertion behind the lines in wartime."

I really don't care for them using the real incident that happened in South Korea as a part of their video game marketing campaign. It just happened so recently that it's in very poor taste for them to do this. I now have no intention of getting this game because I do not wish to support this behavior.

I'm optimistic. Kaos did a good job whit the feel of the shooting in Frontlines: Fuel of War but the rest of the game wasn't all that good. Hopefully they will improve on that for Homefront.

Seriously dude? North Korea takes over the world? As a Korean-American, I'm glad to see developers start to show some interest in that region, but this plot is retarded as hell. I guess the US stopped giving a shit about a completely Communist Korean peninsula (like hell) and China and Russia decided to let this new Korea just annex the entire Pacific.

There's good storytelling, then there's just idiotic bullshit.

Basically they invade a lot of asian countries as well, and they have Korea, Japan, etc. Japan especially makes them an economic powerhouse. Also, they think that the US will never recover from the current recession (in game fiction. In reality, it is getting better) "
And how did they invade South Korea successfully?  Sorry, but there is absolutely no chance for that to happen under the current world conditions.  Far too many local powerhouses are invested in the existence of a productive South Korea.  You can claim the US is completely militarily paralyzed via an economic down turn.  That in itself is already an almost impossible scenario.  When you try to claim China, Japan, and Russia are all more than happy to let North Korea "unite" the peninsula, trying to play that entire scenario off based on current events and thus implying this is taking place in our world does not work.  This does not follow the poli sci and foreign relations rules of our world.

While the Russian invasion of the US in MW2 was also fairly unprobable when someone actually takes a moment to think about it, at least they placed that story line within a world slightly different from ours, and thus suspension of disbelief is actually possible.
