" This is the result of a bunch of thirteen year old boys developing a video game for thirteen year old boys. I think I'll save my money for something good. "
This.  I'll buy the superior action game this early 2010...God of War 3. "
You complain about Bayonetta being a game designed for thirteen year old boys, and then you praise God of War III? Allow me to facepalm. "
Dude please, God of War 3 features an epic story which rewards Greco-Roman and Ancient Greek historical knowledge, features an epic story, epic graphics, epic everything. You're honestly trying to compare it some weirdo Japanese game featuring a librarian who strips down when she attacks? Really? "
You've got to be kidding me. God of War's so called "epic story" can be summed up as "Kratos gets betrayed and decides to kill everything". Bayonetta might not have a great story, but it has superior graphics(perhaps not technically, but the art style is so much better it's not even funny), superior music and far superior combat.  Don't get me wrong, God of War III is doubtlessly going to be an excellent action game. But when compared to Bayonetta the action feels stiff, repetitive and restricted. "
The story brings into play actual mythology (even if they do take free creative license with said mythology). It doesn't change the fact that if you've taken Greco-Roman History, it will put many of the themes and elements of the story in a different perspective.

Bayonetta has superior graphics? This is joke right. I'm not even going to respond to this, you'd have to be blind to say Bayonetta looked better, either technically or artistically (unless you wanna make your argument pointless and argue the subjectivity of art angle).

Music is better? Wtf is this the twilight zone? I'm sorry but the uppity, J-Popish crap spewing out of Bayonetta made me turn the music off when I played it, it was THAT bad.

The gameplay is probably personal preference but if I wanted the wonkiness of DMC I wouldn't be playing God of War. It might feel restricted and stiff to you but that's probably because you're used to playing Japanese games made by developers who are making a last ditch effort to save their industry...by polluting their games with hyper-sexualized leads who strip down when they attack. The absurdity of this fact makes me laugh everytime I think about it.

The mythology only provides the setting and the characters, and those are damn awesome. The story, however, is crap.

I think you're the one who's blind. God of War looks pretty, sure, but the environments are as monotonous as they could possible be. You're always fighting in either rocky landscapes or temples, all of which look very similar. Bayonetta's art style, on the other hand, is both colorful, intricate and varied. I'm not saying God of War looks ugly, because it certainly doesn't. I'm just saying that compared to Bayonetta, it looks boring.

Music is better? Wtf is this the twilight zone? I'm sorry but the uppity, J-Popish crap spewing out of Bayonetta made me turn the music off when I played it, it was THAT bad.

God of War's music is as generic as it gets. Bayonetta's music, on the other hand, is a wild mix of jazz, techno, R&B, J-pop and choir, and fits the game's fast-paced, chaotic combat perfectly.

The gameplay is probably personal preference but if I wanted the wonkiness of DMC I wouldn't be playing God of War. You know what makes me laugh? That you call improving, evolving and polishing action gameplay to near perfection a "last-ditch effort". Did it ever occur to you that the reason I find God of War's gameplay restrictive and stiff is that I've played something that's faster, smoother and much more varied? Oh well, I probably shouldn't expect that level of insight from someone whose brain apparently can't handle anything more complex than God of War.

I'm not a big fan of the ridiculous sexualizing either. The game could definitely do without it. I am, however, a big fan of the outstanding job the team has done on almost every single aspect of the actual game. Bayonetta is head and shoulders above anything I've ever seen in the genre, and that is something I think you should reward.

I could repond to every last bit of this wall of text or just confirm my suspcisions that you are one of the many who are hanging onto the failing Japanese gaming industry with every essence of your will.

Look, if weirdo Japanese games where chicks strip down when they attack gets your engine revving well, then hey, what can I say. Have fun?

Really though if Bayonetta was better than God of War like you say it would get better review scores and sell better. Go ahead and quote me: Bayonetta won't score nearly as well or sell nearly as well as God of War. Why? Because it sucks in comparison to God of War. Pretty simple.

I have never denied that the Japanese video game industry is dying. This particular developer, however, is not. Every single one of Hideki Kamiya's games has received critical acclaim, both in Japan and in the West. That's right, every single game.

While I expect Bayonetta to receive very high scores, it's most likely true that it won't score as high as God of War III. Why? Well, maybe because it's a sequel(believe me, it matters). Or maybe because the blood and gore appeals to the Western market. Or maybe because the gameplay is more familiar -- evolution(which God of War III doesn't have) means change, and people often dislike change, even if it's for the better.

Or maybe -- just a hunch -- it's a combination of all those.

@Icemael: When an industry dies, all firms within the industry die also. Even though Platinum is doing well if the Japanese games industry did ultimately dissolve they'd have to move to the West. Now I don't have sales figures for their games in the West but I bet they wouldn't be developing with Japanese gamers in mind so much anymore if they came to the west.

Conspiracies aside, God of War 3 will score better overall because it is a better game. To claim that ALL reviewers will only review the game highly only because of the few factors you provided, or to claim that ALL the people that buy it will buy it because of those factors is absolutely ludicrous. We're talking millions of people all thinking this game is awesome but coincidentally they all think it's awesome because it's a sequel, it's stale and it's got lots of blood and gore. Right.

I haven't said that all reviewers will give the game high scores because of those reasons, and I didn't say that it'd be for those reasons only. The game will, no doubt, be great and deserve high scores, but those factors will boost the scores. To prove my point, let's take a look at two other games:

Gears of War 2. It was a sequel, it was familiar, and it had plenty of blood and gore. Its Metacritic average is 93%.
Persona 4. It was a sequel, but very few Western gamers had played the previous games. It wasn't familiar, and it didn't have any excessive violence. Its Metacritic average is 90%.
Now Gear of War 2 is a great game and I love it, but seriously, anyone saying that it's better than Persona 4 must be out of their mind. And that's coming from someone who usually hates both dungeon-crawling and turn-based battles with a passion.

Now, I'd like to give you an idea of what games Hideki Kamiya, the man behind Bayonetta, has made in the past. I'll list some of them for you:
  • Resident Evil 2, one of the most beloved survival horror games of all time.
  • Devil May Cry, the game that revolutionized the genre God of War is part of.
  • Viewtiful Joe, possibly the best beat 'em up ever.
  • Okami, possibly the best game ever.
Add to this that there are people from Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 3 working on Bayonetta, and you should get an idea of what the team is like.

The only notable games God of War III's developer has made are... God of War and God of War II. And they didn't even make the best God of War game. Ready at Dawn's God of War: Chains of Olympus may have been the shortest in the series, but it looked better, played better and had a better story than the other two.
