I only managed to make it work with the left one, but there's some funky stuff going on there. I didn't try too many mouse-intensive games but I did fool around with Factorio for a bit and it seemed to work fine!

@typographenia: They felt good to me, but then it was an absolutely brand-new device so it hadn't been stress-tested or anything. Audio seemed good! Not tinny like some devices get. I'm sure it'll be best with headphones though.

Oh, I wonder how it'll handle something like Battlefield 3. Not that it's a demanding game these days, being close to 10 years old, but since it requires you running a browser and the game at the same time in order to get into matches.

Oh, and no Atari Lynx size comparison? Seems similarly sized given that the Steam Deck's relative size to the Game Gear seems approximately the same to this:

@rorie: How does Half Life 3 run on it?

The battery life is concerning but I'm used to carrying multiple powerbanks on the go. Overall pretty excited about your first impressions. This thing may be worth the struggle of obtaining one, assuming they'll be as thoroughly scalped as every other piece of gaming hardware now days.

I have a machine very comparable to Rorie‘s, and I have the same use case that he does. Excited to hear it lives up to expectations, which have been high from early impressions. This really could be a game changer? I know people want to say “Nintendo is Nintendo, they shouldn’t be worried,” but this would definitely prevent me from buying a “Switch Pro” if I’m their target for the next hardware device.

@rorie Were you allowed to load up your Steam account and try games from your library, or only stuff from their approved list? Seems like you were mostly playing the games we've seen in other previews.

It's so nice to see two of the GB team together. I really hope we don't have to wait much longer for the entire team to reunite.

@adamwadepittman: I love my Switch, but it WILL become like the Wii U and be a Nintendo game machine and the Deck will be my indie machine (when I'm able to pick one up).

this was a nice suprise! thanks guys , it sounds like its a good deal for those that dive in n get one of these. i don't go out/travel really (even pre-covid ) so its hard to warrant this for myself when i have my rig hooked up the the bedroom tv and my fiancee has his in the living room. still the concept of this is what i'd always wanted with the wii u and switch. plus it looks honestly like a more comfortable form factor than the switch's skinny design ( hand cramps). either way the fact that it seems to do what you want is a good sign. if not for the lack of right stick that steam controller was great so this will hopefully do better cause it seems like they really have something here.

also nice to see you guys in person i'm not one to complain about the home stuff but its still a different vibe n all.

@rorie: I love seeing you duders doing this kind of content!! I've seem some people around the internets express concern around how the buttons are placed so high and close to the edge of the device. Did you notice any issues with this or did it feel good in the hands? I can't wait to get my hands on one of these haha!

I know value and use is subjective, but do you feel like the higher tier models are worth the price? They get expensive quick for the ones with decent storage.

Have they mentioned if DLSS will work on this thing?

It's not an Nvidia GPU, so no.

I honestly didn't try, sorry; we didn't have a huge amount of time to fool around with it. I don't even think I remember my Steam password at this point! I think anything that will run on Proton will run on the Deck, though.

- were you able to test how well does the suspend/resume functionality works? That seems pretty important for a mobile device.
- how hot does it get?

Yeah, FSR. It's not really equivalent to DLSS, but evidently it will work on Steam Deck's hardware.

Now this feels like a Giant Bomb video!

Also super excited for the Deck. I'm going to wait to see all the independent reviews on youtube to see about the build quality before cashing in my reservation, but on paper it's everything I want.

Sick, a trip vid! I don't see myself getting one, but I rarely see myself doing many things I eventually do. This thing will serve a particular market for sure, seems solid, but this video was just awesome, good field work you two.

@magicspell: The unit got pretty hot but only on the screen and the top vent. Didn't feel it by the controllers at all.

Honestly I came away from this thinking that the lower-priced ones are going to be just fine for people who get one. More memory is always nice, of course, but it just seems like a solid product all around.
