20% royalties

Not a terrible price to pay for such a high quality engine, but if you put it on Steam that means 50% of your sales are gone in royalties... which could be pretty detrimental to a small indie studio.

you could also check out the Unity game engine as a place to start.  Some scripting required tho to get it to really work out for you.

Yes, there is a manual.

No, it isn't particularly easy to use. It's a professional game engine (it is literally Unreal Engine 3.. only you don't get the source code to play with).

For what you want to do though, I imagine you wouldn't need to go too far past the terrain editor and matinee. Though you would need to dig into texturing etc.

In other words, it's not something you're going to get satisfying results with in an afternoon.

Is there like a FAQ or manual out there for the UDK? Has anyone ever messed with it? Let's say I want to make scenic Oblivion like landscapes and have no programming experience, is it relatively easy to just start and dig in? I don't have any intentions on making a playable game, just cool scenic fly bys and stuff like that.

Also, wasn't epic in hot water in the past with Silicon Knights for not providing the latest SDK to devs and using its own franchise (gears) to promote new features and preventing devs from using it first or providing support?

@Newjack: That part actually came out a while ago in some other footage, most of this trailer is actually old really, from various things. I believe the Beards thing was actually a response to this, not the other way around. Could be wrong though.
