I really hope these get day and date PC releases. I used to get completly absorbed in San Andreas and Vice City; the PC monitor is much more immersive than sitting 6 feet from your TV. I also really liked the GTA IV DLC, as those really seemed to get back to the Vice City and San Andreas formula.

I'm pretty hopeful with what I've heard so far

You are? All I heard up until now is that is it not even sure that there will be a PC version at all.

Great, the PC neglect continues. I'm glad Rock* is really reaching for new heights by releasing their marquee title on, totally not dying, 8 year old platforms.

I can't believe they barely said anything about what they saw in the gameplay demo. Hugely disappointing.

I couldn't really concentrate on what they were saying too much, for being transfixed on Jeff's jiggling naked legs. Woah, I don't know what I'm feeling right now.

Thank you for reminding me to never read the comments.

He is right though. GTA4 strayed from the fun formula while at the same time taking out core elements such as real estate or body shops. To each his own of course but I personally didn't care for the driving physics most of all. Some say they liked the more realistic feel, but if I wanted a realistic driving experience I'd play Dirt or Forza. In GTA games I'm used to handbraking around corners at 100mph in a smooth controlled slide. The story was too serious and meandered about too much to the point of completely losing any focus it may have originally set in motion.

These are all my opinions of course, but I'm sure people who disliked GTA4 aren't in some niche minority out there. I still think that Vice City had the best story where you felt like Tommy Vercetti was doing a majority of the missions for his own benefit rather than because someone was simply telling him to do them. San Andreas suffered the most in that respect as Carl Johnson kept doing favor after favor with no real prerogative - not to mention the entire segment with OG Loc.

Couldn't agree more with this, I thought it was okay when I first completed GTA IV. When I recently went back to play some of it again, I really didn't enjoy it. The arcadey controls and funny soul had been ripped out in place of some gritty narrative and the gameplay suffered.

By the by, I'll spoiler this just in case, but concerning the story and how it'll progress involving the three characters, Rockstar have actually stated that one of the three main characters will become the antagonist, but will still be playable.

Sooo... yeah, this game continues to sound like all kinds of Godly right now.

Whoa :O

Do you have a link where they said this? Sounds nuts.

Here's one of many sources out there you can find. Kinda weird how open they've been about such a pivotal plot point. Maybe the moment it's revealed will happen early on?

My money would probably be on Franklin anywhoo; perhaps he plans to fuck over Michael and Trevor to get himself locked in the big leagues, but will eventually die by tragically sacrificing himself after learning the error of the his ways ect. ect. Then for the end game his dog takes over as your third character.

Even though it's all out there, I still think I should spoiler anywhoo just in case, because like you said, it's bloody nuts.

Thanks, it does seem kind of weird that Dan Houser would reveal that in an interview. I think it would be interesting if by the end of the game all three characters have turned against each other. I will personally side with Franklin's dog.

I can't be more excited about GTA. Give me a good sandbox and i will play with it 24/7. So much time wasted in SA. I can totally see myself driving an eighteen wheeler listening to some sweet k-dust.

Hitchhikers? There will be some grim news next morning on the local tv.

I don't think it'll happen as too many PC owners have consoles to play this on as well. It'll probably be six months after once they have complete exhausted sales as they know they can sell it to the same people again with the GOTY editions.

No, GTA IV is one of the best games ever made.

Confirmed: you have not played many video games.

The "best games ever made" age well. GTA IV does not fit that description. All GTA IV has going for it is strong characters. In essentially every other aspect of "GTA style" games, they have been outclassed by competitors.

One of the best games of that year? Sure. One of the best games ever made? Laughable.

@ironlink: yea same here. it is really annoying...but regarding gta 5 like others have said, im glad it runs smooth, and would love to see some sort of stat boost from masks. if they do that and make it a better game to play(which sounds like they are) and learn from sleeping dogs' melee system, then I will be playing this prolly through 2013 into 2014.

I had alot of fun with 4, the big ass city and awesome physics engine made some comedy gold.

The reason Niko was doing alot of those missions was to get information of the man who betrayed him and his army.

It wasn't bad, they just removed a whole lot of features from the past games and it had a bunch of filler missions and the reviews that were made for it were ridiculously over-praising the game for like...no reason. It was a well made game and the shooting was better and the story was more well done than before but besides that it wasn't amazing or anything.

Not really, RDR had a much more detailed and well realized world, Sleeping Dogs had fantastic driving (hell I have spent a lot of time in that game JUST driving), though the music on the radio in GTA IV is still pretty much the best in class, from Terry Riley to Uncle Murda...though Sleeping Dogs' classical music station is awesome.

Anyway this game sounds fucking fantastic. Lots of cool, smart ideas. Hopefully the bicycle and the 100 foot bunny hop cheat are in there.

Name a game that came out this generation that isnt overrated? Portal 2, Arkham City & Uncharted 2 are some of the highest rated games that have come out in the last 5 years but none of them were very innovative.

Personally I was more impressed by GTA4 than any of the other sandbox games that came out this generation, there were better ones, sure but none of them wowed me the same way GTA did. (except all of Bethesda's games, but i'm an Elder Scrolls fanboy so it isnt hard)

Anyway. It's weird that they brought stats back but it makes sense when they're trying to make each of the protagonists feel different. And the seemless switching between characters sounds great. I was worried it'd be like Yakuza 4 where who you played was dictated by how far you were in the overall story.

EDIT: Thought i'd clarify 'name a game that came out this generation that scored high and isnt overrated'. There are plenty of great games that didnt get the praise they deserve. (obviously subjective, but what isnt. I'm just curious what people think)

Sounds ambitious and potentially interesting. I like the approach of using three protagonists a lot. I only really love GTA 1 but certainly had decent fun with San Andreas as well. I'd sure like to get an open world crime game that is either plain old fun (GTA V probably isn't going to be that) or otherwise one that finally nails the execution of a more "realistic", serious tone. Good PC port is mandatory for me of course but I'll keep an eye on this one.

Good format for the sort-of-preview by the way. Well done!

I'm personally not too interested in this game. I have a pretty spotty track record with Rockstar, but GTA especially. I played 2, 3, Vice City, and 4 and finished none of them because I grew disinterested. Vice City i might have finished but i hit a game-breaking bug on PC. I really liked Bully, i liked Red Dead overall but was tired of it by the time it finished, and I really liked LA Noire (though i hated the out-of-nowhere writing at the end of the game).

I was trying to make myself excited by checking this video out, but what i'm hearing doesn't sound like what I want. Maybe gameplay footage will change my mind later though.

And I don't think someone needs to be trolling to call GTA 4 a bad game. Jeff thinks Red Dead is a bad game. GTA4 annoyed me to the point that I stopped playing it. I thought the writing was terrible, and the gunplay atrocious. After a few 10 minute shooting missions were failed with no checkpoints like 12 hours in i just decided "you know what? i'm not even enjoying this game. I'm going to stop playing it."

He's right about the driving physics, music selection, and the well-established cities. Nobody has done all of those things in one game as well as Rockstar. You may not like the driving--which is fine-- but the physics are undeniably fantastic.

Saying that Sleeping Dogs had better driving physics than GTA IV is an absolute joke. GTA IV has a car enthusiast community on the PC that has made tons of modded cars and handling scripts. No other game (much less open world) has attracted that kind of audience.

GTA IV's driving mechanics haven't come close to being matched by an open world game, period.

They are not 'fantastic'. As someone who drives around in a very large city, I can tell you that the streets are not made of ice. They are pretty good and it requires you to be a lot more careful than other more arcadey systems, but the physics are still pretty goofy. They are exaggerated in a different direction. It was cool that stuff like smashing in your body to the point that it was grabbing the wheel was actually a thing, but that's about the only part of that that really impressed me that much. It was cool that it had so much "physics" involved, but it wasn't ever accurate. Hopefully we will see a tighter, but still just as interesting version of the GTA IV driving model.

Sleeping Dogs does have Ninja Tune as a radio station, so props for that.

Yes let's go compare mods, to release code that's how we do it right? Right?
