W.D. Gaster is a character in Undertale. He is referred to by a handful of special NPCs called "Gaster Followers" that can only be encountered in the game world under certain conditions. More specifically, these NPCs only appear when a particular variable in one of Undertale's configuration files (referred to as the "fun value") is set to specific numerical values. When spoken to, each Follower offers a few tidbits of information about "Doctor" W. D. Gaster.
Gaster was allegedly the former Royal Scientist responsible for constructing the CORE, an advanced geothermal power plant that provides magical electricity to the entire Underground. Though Gaster was a brilliant inventor, his life was tragically "cut short" during an experiment after he "fell into his creation"; as a result, Gaster was "shattered across time and space". Following Gaster's demise, King Asgore apparently kept his old position vacant for quite some time before finally appointing Alphys as the new Royal Scientist.
An NPC widely believed to be Gaster himself can be found in a secret room located in Waterfall, the entrance to which appears only when the game's "fun value" is set appropriately.
Though not fully revealed, Gaster is also believed to be behind the world of Deltarune, but at an unknown capacity.
