Used by protagonists when opening a door that is locked, or just for looking really cool.
A protagonist who lacks some or all of the qualities traditionally seen as heroic.
The inverse of an anti-hero. An anti-villain is a villain that portrays him/herself as someone who is just and altruistic while is secretly working towards an otherwise nefarious and villainous goal. Common archetypes of anti-villains are politicians and religious figures who craft a wholesome and good-natured image to hide their evil intentions; this may even sometimes include doing good deeds, but only as a temporary measure to potentially further their true ambitions.
Video game controversy revolves mostly around the psychological effects that games with graphic violence or sexual content in them can have on players. Other sources of controversy can range from racism, sexism, politics, or religion.
A person serving time in prison or an escaped criminal on the run from the law.
A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
One or more events from someone's past that negatively affected them. Plenty of video game characters have such pasts.
A type of affliction or injury that has caused severe damage to the character's appearance.
Scarring over the eye. Used by game developers to make a character appear more rugged and 'badass'.
A grief beard is facial hair that appears on a character after something tragic happens to them in a storyline. The amount of tragedy and how the character is handling it can often be seen in the beard itself.
Sometimes, players experience an unfortunate event that results in all their weapons and items being taken away from them.
Kidnapping is often used in videogames as a motivation for the protagonist to venture into unknown worlds and fight seemingly hopeless battles.
The act of breaking the law.
Mercenaries, Soldiers for Hire, have been found fighting in conflicts since the dawn of human warfare. These hired guns show a desire to turn their talent in the art of death to a more profitable profession.
Murder is the act of ending the life of another living thing against its will without the sanction of a higher governmental authority, such as the casualties that result from acts of war. It is generally intentional, at least in a legal meaning, but not necessarily.
Criminals banded together with a common goal in mind. Can range from a band of thugs to the Mafia.
Any character you can control in a game is a Player Character (PC), as opposed to a non-player character (NPC), which is a character that can only be controlled by the game.
Police are paid protectors who enforce the law through legal use of force. They are supposed to help ensure public safety and social order. Their motto is to protect and to serve.
Revenge is an act of violence, financial ruin, or emotional torment that one person or group carries out against another, in response to some perceived wrongdoing.
Larceny by threat of violence. In video games you either plan and executes such robberies, or your job is to prevent them.
Shakey Cam is the use of shaking the camera in a game in order to give the feeling of chaos, disorientation or realism. It is usually used in action games when moving at fast speeds or when a large impact or explosion occurs.
Whether it be cigarettes, cigars or pipes, tobacco or otherwise, everyone knows that smoking is bad for you - and that it makes you look undeniably cool.
Many games that feature a theft mechanic also include a some form of risk or punishment. Other games just let players steal things as if it's a perfectly normal thing to do.
The player character is seen at a distance from a number of different possible perspective angles. There is generally a movable camera but it can also be in a fixed position. It most commonly refers to a viewpoint behind the player character.
Voice Acting is the art of providing voices for characters in games, television shows, films, radio programs, and other forms of media.
