Concept »
Concept in which designers fuse usefulness of multiple classes into a single class. A Jack of All Trades and (usually) Master of None.
Illithids or mind flayers are monsters originating from D&D who use their psychic powers to shatter their foes' minds. Some become their thralls while others are simply a snack as they crack open their skulls and feast on their brains.
Developed by BioWare for the first Baldur's Gate game, the Infinity Engine features an isometric perspective, pre-rendered 2D backgrounds and sprite-based characters.
Kobolds are anthropomorphic dogs/reptilians of short stature that dwell in forests and caves. In fantasy RPGs, they typically wield primitive weapons and command limited shamanistic magic. The term "kobold" has also been used in reference to other types of creatures including lizardmen, spirits, or simply humanoids with various skin tones.
The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points by completing a variety of tasks such as quests or by "farming" such as killing other characters for their experience points.
A lich is a powerful sorcerer who became undead through a magical ritual they cast on themselves. Usually lichdom is achieved to extend their "lives" or give themselves more power. They can control vast hordes of undead.
The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the fundamental laws of science.
Creatures that are usually part fish and part human.
Orcs/Orks/Orques are a fictional race of tough humanlike creatures, often with green or black skin, originally coming from the Saxon word for the Normans during the invasion, meaning demon or foreigner.
Distinct from a battle between good and evil, the struggle between the natures of order and chaos carries greater complexity in which neither side is purely right or wrong.
A paladin is a holy warrior, who gains extra abilities through faith and devotion to a deity.
A system in which the player is allowed to control multiple characters. Most commonly seen in role playing games. Can also be used to describe party systems in the MMORPG genre, which brings a group of players together to accomplish various tasks.
A playable class in many roleplaying games. Rogues are also sometimes known as Thieves. The class in almost all these games center around their stealth capabilities.
Game mechanics traditionally found in role-playing games that are incorporated into a non-RPG title.
Skeleton Warriors are comprised of the animated bones of the dead. Often brought to life to do the bidding of an evil master as mindless and indefatigable soldiers and guardsmen.
A blob consisting of some icky substance, the slime monster is one of the most used RPG monster clichés besides rats.
The Umber Hulk is a massive insectoid creature in the Dungeons & Dragons universe that can cause confusion with its gaze.
Vampires are undead, nocturnal creatures that subsist on blood. They have superhuman powers and are sometimes able to shape-shift. They are weak against sunlight, foreign objects stuck in and left in their hearts, decapitation and sometimes holy water and crosses.
An individual who specializes in armed combat.
Being learned scholars and masters of the arcane arts, wizards wield great power by manipulating magical energy for the forces of good and evil.
Wraith are apparitions clad in dark robes. They are often in possession of scythes, making them somewhat akin to Reapers. Some have magical abilities.
Zombies, more accurately called the walking dead, are reanimated corpses who feed on the living, and have become a ubiquitous video game enemy. They often move slowly, but can be deadly in large numbers, which is unfortunately how they tend to travel. Shotgun time!
