Games I Finished in 2019, pt 2

  • I'm surprised the co-op aspect of this game was not more heavily touted by Nintendo, it works great, but is strictly additive, which is truly impressive. The game is not lessen by playing single-player, but almost always better with a second player.

  • I really enjoyed the anti-capitalist goofs of this game quite a bit. The writing is not subtle, but it's still quite funny. The gameplay is fun enough and I enjoyed the soundtrack quite a bit.

  • Damn, this game rules. Pretty sure this will be a Top 10 game for me. It's fun as hell, has a great art style, ripping soundtrack, and is challenging but fair. It actually does a lot of cool things, gameplay-wise, as well. For example, every time you get a new weapon, the next section of the game will usually do a great job of letting you utilize the weapon effectively and show it off. This is not by explicit tutorial, but just organically as you play.

  • Really cool game in the style of a Valkyrie Profile game. Really liked the game across the board, from art & character designs to the fighting system.

  • This is probably the best game from this studio yet. I really liked the combat mechanics quite a bit. The art style and setting are both interesting. My main complaint is that the writing couldn't really deliver on the core conceit of "what if reincarnation was a real thing, but people could be trapped in our plane due to unfinished business?" The game starts out strong in this regard and is a strong mediation on grief, but it loses the plot really quickly.

  • This game is another pass of polish away from being really great. The controls are a bit too loose and the combat tries to appear complicated, but is just mashy. It's a shame because the art and creativity on display are excellent.

  • I thought this was very fun and charming for a JRPG I had not heard of before. Only took me around 20 hrs to beat, which was great (more shorter JRPGs, please!) - the game did not wear out its welcome. The character designs and art style are very Pixar-esque, there's some good music, and the battle system is simple yet fun. All the bosses are surprisingly hard, as well, and took more strategy than I was anticipating.

  • Really cool genre mashup with a fantastic art style. The last couple boss encounters are absurdly hard though, and made me take a long break from the game before coming back to finish it. There's a hidden weapon early on in the game that lets you heal, and almost seems necessary for the end game (I only found this out after a bit of searching online, I totally missed this initially).

  • Man, this game grabs you early and does not let go. It is thrilling, weird, fun, and just a great time all around. I almost passed on this game after reading how poorly the PS4 version ran, ended up playing it post-patch and it ran pretty well overall. Really glad I experienced this game, it was fantastic.

  • This games slow mo gimmick sorta wore off on me kinda quick. I did finish it, but it was just okay.

  • I had a great time playing this co-op. It's a real shame no one seems to have really played it. The grab controls can be a little finicky sometimes, but I felt like it added to the mid-2000s Sega Dreamcast-esque charm of the game. Catchy music too!

  • Hell of a game. Hard to talk about without spoiling.

  • By far the best modern take on a beat-em-up I've ever played. Tons of moves, cool bosses, fantastic music.

  • I'm consistently impressed with Image & Form's ability to tackle a completely new genre in every game they make, and do a great job with it. This game is no exception, as it is a fantastic deck-building game. I played through on the hardest difficulty, and it was a formidable but fair challenge that really made me think about my strategies.
