Can A Website Make You Better At Headshots?

That's one of the ideas behind Activision's new Call of Duty subscription service.

A webpage posting a picture of a webpage that features an embedded video on it. And they said the Rapture wasn't real...
A webpage posting a picture of a webpage that features an embedded video on it. And they said the Rapture wasn't real...

Though I always thought that Bungie's website did amazing things with Halo statistics, it was always held back a bit by the fact that I'm just not great at playing Halo against others. So it's always cool to see specifics on my play in Halo: Reach, ODST, Halo 3, and Halo 2, but it always sort of comes back with the same basic idea:

"You're kind of shitty at Halo, man."

That's fine. I can take it. The cycle of getting pretty good at something quickly only to never play it again once the review is written sort of comes with the territory in this job. But with all this data collecting, isn't there some way for the game to tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or what I need to be working on? That's the future potential for this sort of stat tracking, and it's one of the potential differentiators for Activision's similar service for Call of Duty called Call of Duty Elite.

Or, at least, Activision's claiming that Elite can make you a better player. The catch is that it isn't really showing much of this "teach you how to be better" potential. I saw an exhaustive presentation for what is, essentially, Activision's version of Bungie's free stats service, complete with personalized heatmaps, and a Steam-like setup that lets like-minded groups commune. "Improve" is even one of the three pillars of the service, which means it was sort of driven into our heads again and again by the presenters. But short of looking at those maps of levels and seeing where you die a lot, it didn't seem like the service was set up to actually systematically tell you what you're doing wrong. It lacks analysis. Even a basic "you need to work on aiming, your opponents are getting shots off on you 0.3 seconds before you're returning fire" would probably help. Instead, it appears that most of that advice is set to come from the community. The "improve" section of the Elite site currently shows maps of all the levels with a bit of descriptive text, as well as articles on every weapon and attachment in the game, which all strikes me as a little basic for the type of person who might be willing to spend time on a site devoted to Call of Duty stats.

== TEASER ==

Groups and clan support will also be present. Groups look similar to Steam groups in that they can be about anything, so they can be for fans of in-game characters to fans of football or Chevys or whatever. Clan support was talked about, but not really shown. It, along with most of Call of Duty Elite's features, will be integrated into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 upon its release this November. But the service will also support Black Ops, and the stats that that game has been keeping since its launch last year will be present when Elite rolls out.

Elite will also have support for leagues and tournaments with prizes for top contestants. Some of these challenges won't require top play, though, with different categories like "best screenshot" or "best video clip." Another one listed the "Most Destroys" for Headquarters mode. Hopefully these goals will focus on team-oriented goals over personal goals, as it would be pretty annoying to have everyone on your team going for broke on some specific objective just to win a Jeep--which was one of the placeholder prizes shown on the work-in-progress version of the Elite site we were shown.

No Caption Provided

Activision's being really cagey about what will cost money and what will be free, and it seems like they actually haven't figured out where to erect the pay wall. Things like stats and groups will, from the sounds of things, probably be free to all players. Considering these services are done for free elsewhere, that's probably a good move. The other potentially interesting thing is that being an Elite member gives you all of the Modern Warfare 3 downloadable add-ons as they're released. That, it's safe to assume, will only be for people with paid accounts. So if we further assume that there will be three map packs released over MW3's lifespan, that's $45 of value right there. How much would you be willing to pay for something like this? Activision will only state that it will be "less than any comparable service." Considering that Bungie does stats for free on its shooters--and that's pretty comparable--I'm having a hard time seeing anything that makes Elite worth more than the raw cost of the map packs alone. Maybe getting all its DLC money up front, while you're still super excited about the game is enough. Activision's claiming that Elite is an evolving service that will grow over time, so maybe it'll have more going on that we were initially shown.

The good news is that nothing is being forced on you. If you want to buy Modern Warfare 3 and buy (or not buy) the map packs, you'll have roughly the same experience you've always had, but with the potential addition of deeper stats. That, of course, all depends on where Activision decides to drop its pay wall. There's nothing wrong with that. And if you're the type of person who absolutely has to have it all and wants in on tournaments and leagues and all that extra stuff, well, Activision will be ready to accept your payment details later this year.

Practice & a good game with decent controls makes you better at headshots. The website will just be good at telling you which guns are better than others than getting this.

The way they handled the map packs in Modern Warfare 2 has guaranteed that I will not sign up for this. I'll be fine with just the core game.

Yeaaaaaaah, not paying for this service. Like the article says, Bungie.net offers most of this service for free. Kind of interesting, since Activision is Bungie's publisher these days (that feels so weird to type).

@AgentofChaos: Same thing as paid leagues, although, perhaps not as full fledged as something like ESEA or ESL.

Why would I pay for something that tells me I suck at Call of Duty, the leader board they currently have already tells me that.  Hell the game summary at the end of each game notifies me of this.

Plenty of people will sign up for this. The question is whether it's worth it. And there's too many variables we don't know to answer that.

god dam activision, i was going to not play any newer cod games anymore. but being a stats whore I can't ignore this. It looks pretty interesting. The only reason i'l pass on this is because I have other stuff to do. I already bought mw2 and blops i have no intention of getting another one in the next years.

Only thing is that, I hope it really offers MORE than comparable services. Now it just looks like a combination of existing things like steam / facebook and a strategy guide or a wiki.

I'm not seeing anything that somebody else hasn't made for free in the past. But it is like XBL, you charge money for something that was suppose to be free, don't give the players any option and with time, the sheep will begin to defend your actions.

It's confidence tricks 101, the mark won't accept that he/she is being played so they create excuses for the conman's actions.

Activision has finally gone mad,mad like the scientist who created frankenstein. I see bobby kotich emerge from the scene. Still can't believe there charging money again. They have so much money from the last years with these game and still they want money? There are very very greedy at this moment. I see the grinch all ready smiling. And i compared that CoD Elite with Bungie.net it is exaclty the same only with a different name. I am so sad to see this franchise going to a death that i can not tell.

Sure it's one person speaking here but activision will not give a damn about you or anything else. They will get your money out of your cold dead body since well you want play with new maps? Give me 15 dollars so you can play or pay around 8 dollars a month. I think this could be the death to many games since a lot of them are doing this for totally free!

My only hope lies with Battlefield 3...really one last hope for a awesome pc shooter. And no i will not buy MW3 since it's running on a engine wich is eleven years old! And it's still the same old game with some new make up nothing more nothing less. But who am i to say? I know people will buy it since they need there k/d ratio fix, since i don't care about that either. I just want go in a game have some fun shooting like Bad company 2 and them i am happy. MW1 was such a great game but the developers have gone crazy since they need to work and shup up from Mr. Kotick. I mean 5 fucking studios are making only a title called CoD nothing more nothing less.

And all the press release it is so full of horseshit you can't even see the shit in front of you. I hate them for talking smak like that really with a big pokerface. They promise a lot but they don't,i think like Black Ops the launch will be flawless for 360 players and again PS3 and PC are screwed like they give a damn. Patching goes even slower then my internet in 1998. So my wish is from now till the end of time do not buy this shit since for 15 bucks you buy great indie games for more fun then 5 maps..... or even a CoD game since the flamers/hackers etc will be there and no 'nice' social community there is only hate in all CoD these days.

Wont pay for stat tracking.

Would pay for only getting matched up with people who fill in a giant sheet with questions like are you rowdy 1-not at all 2-a little and being able to filter people who didnt tick a certain box.

Ok before i grab my pitch fork and torch. i like some more details. if all it is, is access to new maps 1 week early and the ability to share youtube clips. count me out. il go buy a capture card for 15 bucks and then post them to facebook. as for crazy stat tracking. im all for it! but they would really need to out do Bungie first.  still maybe come E3 they announce something really cool and they'll get my money.

But but but then what will I complain to the internet about?

I was really hoping I would never have to be "devil's advocate" especially for Activision of all companies, but considering the amount of information they released regarding which services are payed for and which aren't (they haven't), the majority of the complaints leveled so far here seem very shallow and nitpicky. I guess that makes sense in the end, when you consider that the majority of people who care enough about video games to post comments on news articles about them are shallow, nitpicky people. I certainly am, but I never pretended I wasn't.

Why does anyone need to know where they killed most in a map or where they get the most kills at in a map? Just line up your sights and shoot faster than the other dude. That one's free.

I smell a rat.  It's name is Bobby Kotick.  If they even hint at selling better weapons and equipment for use in multiplayer to give subscribers an unfair advantage against players who didn't pay the subscription fee, the CoD franchise will be dead to me forever.  That kind of nonsense is nothing less than a paid form of multiplayer cheating, sanctioned by the publisher in a foolhardy attempt to squeeze a few more nickels out of a franchise that is being milked to its maximum already.  It would backfire in their faces, though, as millions of players would leave CoD for the Battlefield franchise.  Activision is playing with fire -- BF3 looks amazing, and this is no time to leave CoD to leave an opening for a rival, especially with a game engine that is looking dated in comparison with BF3.

Kudos to Jeff for the balanced and reasonable write-up.  Reminds me why I pay for this site, when much of the same is available for free elsewhere.

Now if only I thought this Elite service would be in any way comparable...
