'Comprehensive' Fallout: New Vegas Patch Is Coming

Bethesda aims to squash save corruption bugs, as well as other unspecified stuff.

Super Mutants, Bark Scorpions, and other Fallout: New Vegas baddies always get the jump on me. It's not because I suck--it's because I run backwards. I've discovered that if you jog while facing companions, it's easier to keep track of them and recover them quicker if they get stuck on geometry (which happens quite often in the wastelands). Obviously, this is not an ideal way to play New Vegas, but it's just one of those things you have to live with if you want to enjoy the fun, yet buggy game.

Better and more forward-facing times are on the horizon I'm assuming, as Bethesda has announced a big 'ole "comprehensive" patch for all three of the game's platforms. According to a recent Bethesda blog post about it, Bethesda mentions that the patch will squash save file corruption bugs and address a "number of other issues being reported" by people. Surely, companion glitches have been brought up to the studio often enough to be fixed with this one, right? Fingers are crossed.

No Caption Provided

This patch is expected to arrive in a few weeks, as it exits final testing and hits certification. A different and smaller PC-specific patch that will address companion woes, save corruption issues, and improve NVIDIA owners' performance problems is expected to drop as early as next week.

Hopefully it addresses the glitch where hacking doesn't work if you have altered the button layout. As of right now I can only get the hacking screen to appear if I change the button layout to "default", which it so friggin' weird.

Good.  Every time I start getting into the game, something weird happens where I get stuck, or it crashes, and I just lose steam and turn it off.

Nice, but I still don't know if I have it in me to support a company that would release a product so broken.  But for the people that are playing this, I hope it solves all their problems and makes their product a more enjoyable one to boot.

I've played the game for over 30 hours and haven't had too many problems. Froze a few times. And whenever companions get stuck, I just wait an hour or 2, and then they're right beside me. But I'm guessing that they're going to fix that "Lucky Old Sun" glitch, so I better get my Hardcore character going and cheat his way up to Level 30.

Not sure a patch can fix a game that is fundamentally broken.

That being said, the game probably sold very well anyway.

Love the game. Couple crashes and I lost my companions (more my fault than the games when i tell em to wait in a dark alley....alone) but nothing game-breaking.

Meh too late for me I just beat it yesterday and it was amazing unfortunately one bug kind of ruined the route I was going with the game lets just say I ended up being "independent" but nonetheless less great game. I'll load it up again when they release some new dlc.

There lies a great game underneath the burnt charred corpse that is this iteration of the Gamebryo engine and the bugs brought forth by the devteam, but this does not deserve even a mention in GOTY talks because of the state it was shipped in. It would be sending another signal that we are okay with this level of quality and stability.

In all the 40 hours I've played this game, I don't think i've encountered many bugs. The occasional FPS drop and the odd bit of NPCs clipping into one another. But that's literally it. Maybe I am lucky, or maybe people like to complain.

It's weird. I haven't noticed any glitches, other than getting stuck
that existed in Fallout 3.  Just don't walk in inclined areas.

post-apocalyptic logic.

@Addfwyn: It really isn't as broken as all the complaining on the internet would have you believe.  Apart from the odd character falling into a rock I haven't experenced any other major problems. Bear in mind this 80hours in on the 360. (Installed with regular cache cleans).  I wouldn't let however a well meaning principle put you off one of the best gaming experiences of the year.
If you like story, character and immersion and ability to actually play a role i'd give it a go. If you need 60fps and a super-polished glitch free time to keep you believing in an experience then maybe its not for you. However, if you liked Fallout3 it is no more buggy than that was (in my experience obviously) but is a much better game in terms of the writing and plotting.
Remember, people on the internet who are unhappy make a lot more noise than the contented majority happily gaming away.

I had plenty of issues with New Vegas, but can't say I ever noticed my companions getting stuck.  It's probably because they're so distracted by their leader running everywhere backwards.

Geez, I don't think I'll still be playing this in a few weeks. According to various guides I've looked at, I'm past the half way point in this game already, even at the snails pace I play at...

Meanwhile, "save early, save often" is working out for me.

I've logged 90 hours in the PC version of this and while there are plenty of small bugs (floating dog eyeballs!) there have only been a couple of showstoppers but most of those have been fixed with console hacks - stuck in scenery, Brotherhood quest being borked and needing resetting, vanishing companions, spawning inside companions (yikes!) - others like random desktop crashes and companions totally ignoring any passive tactics I've just been living with. Usually by making them all wait outside any areas that might be interesting.

Load times on the PC make this more playable than consoles to begin with, so that's a bonus right there.

Patch will be too late in couple of weeks when I've squeeze out every quest drop. So it's lucky that the PC version is already in better shape.

Except for those fucking dumb invisible walls.

Who cares if companion pathfinding can't get past a rock on a hill? Fuck 'em they can take the long way around My character can get past it and that should be all that matters

Patch those out.

PC players should take a look at this list of mods. Some of those mods fixes some of the broken or illogical stuff. The first one was taken down or something unfortunately, but mirrors can be found by searching for "Fallout New Vegas community bug fix" in your favorite interwebs search engine. If you have found a good mod that fixes something broken or annoying, please add it to the list.

I've got the PC version so I haven't had too many problems (Once I figured out that the shitty 260 Nvidia drivers were causing my games to crash.  Screw you, Nvidia.) but anything that could help address my companions sticking with me a little bit will be appreciated.  Freakin' ED-E keeps disappearing and I have to summon him with the console.

Or that we sometimes are prepared to accept a game having some problems if it means we can have an ambitious game with the amount of quality content that this has.

Tbh, I don't disagree with you about this having enough problems to prevent it being a GOTY contender, but on the other hand, an excessive backlash against them doesn't help us much either.  It won't result in them adding an extra 6 months to the dev cycle next time to allow for extra testing, they'll simply make a less ambitious game instead.  It shouldn't have to be an either / or situation, but it is, and I'd rather just put up with the issues than have them start making the same extremely polished, shallow nothingness that most everybody else is making.

They keep telling us that the benefit of a prolonged console life cycle is that by the fifth year, developers really start to know their tools and the platforms they're developing for. So, how is it that so many big titles from big developers continue to come out in such a poor condition (to the point of Microsoft/Lionhead asking retail customers to do their bug-testing for them)?

Medal of Honor, Fallout: New Vegas, Fable III. Lots of major problems, some game-stopping, and all seemingly described as "PreviousVersion . . . . Point Five".

You took the words right out of my mouth.  There does
appear to be a major amount of complaining that doesn't
really fit what is experienced.  It's like some mentality on
the Internet decided they wanted to kill this game or
Obsidian by just spewing out constant & continuous
complaining about something that isn't even a problem.
The same thing has been going on forever with Star Trek
Online. Never mind the fact that they've improved quite
a bit with it over time.

I'm chalking it up to some new style of griefing. The
collective masses are saying there is a glitch to get others
to believe the same thing & make their statement
sound true when it actually isn't & issues being uncovered
are from a smaller minority.

wtf? I don't know what's up with people, maybe people should play the PC version like I do, I get literally no crashes, I've never had a problem with saves, I can't think of any other problem I've had, I'm seriously trying to think of any technical issues I've had with New Vegas and I can't think of anything.

@Lind_L_Taylor: I think there has been a lot of complaining but i'm not sure if it is anything as conspiritorial as you make out. I just think people make a lot more noise when they complain than when they are happy. No-ones going to jump on a forum to rant about how they have been having no technical issues with a game - unless provoked by a lot of complaining as in this case.
I also think part of the problem is that people expect different things from games. Fallout NV is (imo)a triple AAA release (hate that term) I I think for some people that brings the expectation of polished graphics, 60fps etc - however I think Fallout is a slightly different game and I think its hardcore go to it for the writing, story and sense of exploration and are a more forgiving of dusty visuals and maybe are better at suspending their disbelief when I supposed bustling gambling hub looks like a suburban highstreet on a wet Monday night.
Of course it would be nice to have great story and something stunning to look at - I dream of Obsidian writing the story and Rockstars Red Dead team making the world......

Ha, I just have to respond.   Blaming people?
So it's the consumers fault for not getting the "right" version.   (Didn't realize everyone has a gaming PC, let alone wants to play on a PC).  Then because YOU have never had issues on PC that somehow means EVERYONE doesn't have issues on PC.

Self centered much?

I would guess that the majority of people playing fallout probably are like you, they have no issues.  Heck, I've played for a few hours and I have yet to have an issue.   That doesn't change the fact that clearly there are some game breaking bugs that they need to fix so paying consumers have a working game.

When they say "save corruption" does that include my issue of any save past the ghoul mission to space crashes to the desktop instantly when I try to load it? 'Cause if it fixes that whole thing... that'd be great.

I wonder if Brad Nicholson tried the PC version... cause I didn't have any of those problems, really. Oh, I'm lying! There were two random NPCs that ran into a wall once...
Anyway, if the game was like this, maybe they shouldn't have put it out for the consoles at the same time... or delay the PC release, if they wanted to release for the 3 platforms all at once.

@leebmx: I'd go farther and say that I enjoyed Red Dead's story way more then Fallout New Vegas' also and that Rockstar should also do the story. Basically they should just take over the Fallout brand, I'm sure they'd have no trouble including all the landmarks of the series like vaults and side quests, that's really all I care about as far as fallout specific stuff goes.

...imagine if the combat in fallout was fun, that 40+ hours would turn into 120+ hours I think.

These problems on the pc version are somewhat less common.  The only time I've lost my companions is the time I told them to "wait here" and then I proceeded to forget where "here" was... fortunately after a pre-set amount of time the game sent them back to their recruitment locations and let me know I could go re-recruit them again... but that issue was my fault, not the game's.

I understand a lot of folks have had trouble with disappearing companions, one of the most common fixes to that problem is going to Vault 22 and using the elevator there, supposedly that summons your companions to you no matter where they were... just make sure they're still in your party (ie you're still getting their perks).

I don't know anything about save file corruption, I have to assume that's a problem with the console release as I've not encountered it on the pc version nor have any of my pc gaming buddies...

It's a shame the game was released in such a buggy state but I've enjoyed it so much more than Fallout 3 (which I also liked) that I really haven't minded the occasional crash or companion getting caught in geometry... I once had Boone sitting waist deep in a boulder and when I moved on he sprinted off in the opposite direction... he apparently took the long way as he did eventually catch up with me.
