Details On Call of Duty's Future 'In the Coming Weeks' [UPDATED]

Activision apparently not dropping details on rumored Modern Warfare prequel yet.

UPDATED: Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has dropped a few more hints about the next Call of Duty, too, during the same call.

"[We're excited by] the creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making," said Hirshberg, "and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and, of course, epic action. The game has exceeded every internal milestone and we look forward to sharing it with you soon."

---

There have been rumors flying this morning that Activision would reveal the first details on the next Call of Duty today, reportedly a prequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. On Activision's quarterly financial call this afternoon, however, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said anything concrete is a few weeks off.

"This year's Call of Duty has a very high bar to exceed," said Kotick. "We believe this year's Call of Duty initiatives will result in the best Call of Duty experiences we have created to date."

In addition to the expected sequel, Activision will be launching a microtransaction-based Call of Duty for the Asian market and a digital service called Beachhead. It's not clear what Beachhead is just yet.

Kotick said more details on all three initiatives will arrive "in the coming weeks" and the launch of the next major Call of Duty will represent Activision's "largest integrated marketing and retail campaign."
E3 just so happens to be in a couple of weeks, by the way.

@Nedemis: Newsflash: the vast majority of people are fucking stupid.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's actually good (hell I'd argue that this is true in MOST cases); the movie and music industry is loaded with examples of this simple fact.

They talk about scale of the online play and new level of emmersion.

You got two options here really:

1. You do not go totally nuts and just offer bigger maps, players and options - Head down that Battlefield route. Do what you do for call of duty but just do it BIGGER. Tanks, planes, space , gunning a lot of people down or have that nice sniper spot.

2. You go open Living world. You have maps that constantly run that you can tap into. Your goal is to turn the tide. You have maps that is a big huge city and goals and rewards and takes a lot of PVP MMO elements. Your basically going away from maps and more into Zones.

Either way done well will be cool.

"This year's CoD has a high bar to exceed." LOL. Like Kotick knows anything about quality in a game. He couldn't tell the difference between any of the shit he cranks out every year. The only "high bar" he knows of is the financial one the last CoD set. That's it. Fuck him.

i love this post because it shows how much of a joke this industry is
they're spouting out meaningless bullshit about milestones and high bars to exceed, something their annual rehash CoD has nothing to do with, and we're here either mocking Activision or debating whether MW3 will actually be a milestone, and there are tens of millions around the world who believe PR statements like this and buy COD every year

what a fucking mess of a fucking joke
"
or maybe millions of people buy the games because they actually enjoy them.  You ever think of that?Every CoD game has been enjoyable and I've yet to find another franchise that consistently keeps me entertained for as long as CoD has.  Haters will always be around,  but the sales show that the VAST MAJORITY of gamers enjoy this franchise more and more every year. "
Yea you guys are totally right! Fucked up mess.. The mainstream casual don't really dig into video games news.

Silly bastards are to busy figuring out trivial matters like: How to get into college? or my favorite one: I have to pay my fucking mortgage so I don't loose my home.. or even those silly scientist trying to fix the energy problem.

pufff fucked up world.

I want a sequel to MW2... And not by treyarch... for some reason the treyarch games arent as fun to me... I wish infinity ward was still intact. but whatever... I hope and pray that Battlefield 3 is awesome because I am sick of COD and all of its clones. Just my opinion.

Dude, they're video games, this isn't a social battle.  The guy's not wrong, a ton of people do enjoy the games whether you think they suck or not.  I don't buy these games but I don't hate on people who do.

COD has outsold Battlefield from day one.  The same thing will happen at the end of this year too.  MW3 will outsell B3 easily.  The public has spoken year after year.  People who hate on COD are in the minority.

Unless they can really fresh up the CoD-formula --which has really started to grow stale lately-- i won't be buying the next, inevitable Modern Warfare game. Atleast not this year.

Ugh! The word epic is used so much in marketing and so much other bullshit these days, and now its getting dropped by Activision CEOs? Christ - I know its so stupid, but I rage so hard when someone speaks the word epic. It kills me. Worst word in the English language.

But on topic - I really hope they can do something interesting with all this rumored online stuff, I'd give anything to go back to the Call of Duty 4 levels of addiction. The past games just bore me after like 2 months.

A  prequel? Why?? I'd assume people would want a sequel. Not interested in where people from MW came from. Want to know what will happen to Soap and Price.

It was better in so many ways. Graphics, story (still pretty bad though), longer campaign, more enjoyable to play and simply it didn't kill the franchise (or as badly as Black Ops did).
Not to mention the tedious glitches and really bad matchmaking (zombies is the worst I have seen for quite some time). It was a better game.

As long as the single player delivers, i'll buy it. I'm more interested in how they innovate on the single player aspect of the game, like they did with Spec--Ops, than anything they do with the multiplayer.

exactly.....I've never understood why people hate on people that like particular games anyway.  Just shows how immature they are.
