Details On Call of Duty's Future 'In the Coming Weeks' [UPDATED]

Activision apparently not dropping details on rumored Modern Warfare prequel yet.

UPDATED: Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has dropped a few more hints about the next Call of Duty, too, during the same call.

"[We're excited by] the creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making," said Hirshberg, "and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and, of course, epic action. The game has exceeded every internal milestone and we look forward to sharing it with you soon."

---

There have been rumors flying this morning that Activision would reveal the first details on the next Call of Duty today, reportedly a prequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. On Activision's quarterly financial call this afternoon, however, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said anything concrete is a few weeks off.

"This year's Call of Duty has a very high bar to exceed," said Kotick. "We believe this year's Call of Duty initiatives will result in the best Call of Duty experiences we have created to date."

In addition to the expected sequel, Activision will be launching a microtransaction-based Call of Duty for the Asian market and a digital service called Beachhead. It's not clear what Beachhead is just yet.

Kotick said more details on all three initiatives will arrive "in the coming weeks" and the launch of the next major Call of Duty will represent Activision's "largest integrated marketing and retail campaign."
E3 just so happens to be in a couple of weeks, by the way.

Big shocker there. Are micro-transaction based games really that big over seas?

Edit: Third time, I'm a jerk.

Heard that the prequel will revolve around Ghost, one of the supporting casts in MW2.

My guess is that there'll be a lot of guns and shooting people in the next game.

Prequel? Yawn... If it's not finishing off the modern warfare story arc then I'll just let game reviews sway my judgement since this November is filled up.

@cyraxible: Yes, microtransaction games are the main type of games over in Asia.  For one, it helps fight piracy and secondly, they can easily be played in internet cafes which is how most people game in Asia.

Wasn't Black Ops basically a prequel to Modern Warfare?  If MW took place in the present day, and Blops ended in the 70's, then the window of time available is pretty boring.

My guess is that they're going to announce Modern Warfare 3 before E3, so that Activision can own the news cycle.  Activision and Call of Duty are so big they don't need E3 to announce anything.  They can do their own announcement, then show the videos/demos at E3 on stage with Microsoft.

Prequel, so instead of finishing the trilogy and letting it die in peace, we'll be taking a pause to milk out the final chapter even further?

I think I can speak for the entire industry when I say: It's about time for a new Call of Duty game.

Black Ops may have been the single most important video game in the history of video games, so I'm interested to see how they can follow that act.

I love how all of these companies like Capcom and Activision are saying in "a few weeks" or like 4 weeks or something...which is when E3 is. So silly.

I would really like to see a system in the Call of Duty franchise perhaps along the lines of buyable guns, maps, single player levels that persist across games based on your xbox live or PSN account or, with regards to PC, your battle.net profile.

They stated that 50% revenue last year was from digital sales. I wonder what this could mean for the franchise.

I think bobby got his hands on some of that TF2 hat technology.  That must be the the thing that "will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and, of course, epic action."  The TF2 community is still going strong and they haven't got a new game since 2007!  This is the secret Kotick has been looking for since the fall of guitar hero.

A prequel to Modern Warfare? Do I get to play as an up-and-coming Price? Because if they did that, I would totally jump on board. As tired as these games have become, and as ridiculous as the stories have been, I've grown attached to the characters. If they can make good on a that narrative hook, that might just be what I need to get pumped for a new CoD game.
