Driver: San Francisco on PC Marks Return of Always-On DRM

Ubisoft is reviving one of its much maligned DRM policies.

Ubisoft has gone back and forth on its PC DRM policies. With Driver, it's back to always-on.
Ubisoft has gone back and forth on its PC DRM policies. With Driver, it's back to always-on.

Ubisoft's relationship with PC users has been a rocky one, thanks to the company's erratic DRM policies. Sometimes its games require a constant online connection to play, sometimes not.

Assassin's Creed II required an Internet connection at first, even if you were playing single-player. So did Splinter Cell: Conviction. Ubisoft eventually patched out that requirement, instead asking players to verify the game's authenticity through a login screen. After that, the game didn't check for an Internet connection. Ubisoft relied on a similar login method for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Not perfect, but it worked.

Ubisoft is returning to the always-on requirement for the PC version of Driver: San Francisco.

"I can confirm that the PC version of Driver San Francisco will require an online connection to play in both single player and multiplayer modes," said Ubisoft public relations representative Dominic DiSanti to me this afternoon.

The change in DRM policy was noticed on the game's official Twitter account.

On the console versions of Driver, players will have to activate Uplay in order to access the game's multiplayer, as Ubisoft adopts the now regular "online pass" feature designed to combat used games.

"When we first introduced the connection requirement last year, we stated that our decision to implement it into our PC titles would be considered on a case by case basis and this remains true," said DiSanti. "We will assess each future PC title and strive to offer the best gameplay experience possible while also ensuring that we are protecting the amazing work and effort of our talented creative teams."

Part of the reason people react strongly to Ubisoft's DRM policy is out of principle. They own the content, why can't they play it, with or without Internet? The other reason is practical, as hackers brought down Ubisoft's DRM authentication servers, which prevented some users from being able to play Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter 5, two games with always-on DRM.

It's possible Ubisoft will change its stance, depending on user feedback; the company has done so in the past. As it stands, however, when Driver ships in September, it'll mark a return in DRM policy.

Not true.  I am going to buy it.... in time.... when its cheaper.... eventually.  I loved Driver and Driver 2.  Now Driv3r is a different story... I'm REALLY HOPING this game will be good.  Just keep Tanner in the car and I think we'll be good.

Such a dumb move...  It's almost like they WANT to phase out PC games by blaming pirating on low sales.  I was hoping this would resurrect the feeling you got from playing the first game.  Now I'll never know.  I'm not throwing down $60 for Ubisoft to "loan" me a crap game.

I have to wonder what Valve has to say about all this and what efforts they're making to make Steam games safe against piracy attempts. It seems to be an assumption that when it's not on Steam, a proprietary DRM solution is applied much to the chagrin of PC gamers. I wonder if Steam is the solution or what.

Keep in mind Ubisoft made this decision in lieu of their Uplay initiative. The second wave of always-on DRM is likely connected to this on top of the relative size of this franchise. People were forever associating Assassin's Creed on the PC with that DRM and that proved too costly. I wonder if the math worked out that Driver would benefit anyway or they're just hoping people forgot and are trying again. Either way there's nothing to get too worked up about because people can't be surprised.

It requires the people who payed for it to subject themselves to a severe playing restriction.. remind me again how this effects the people who pirate the game? Any justification or reason at all?

I was even mildly interested in this title but I can never support pre-draconian measures like this.

There will be cracked versions of this game within days of it being released, if not sooner, whereas anyone with a legitimate copy will AGAIN BE PENALIZED. I'm not harping on patrick exactly when I say this, but it feels like no one in the press ever gives two shits about this unless it's in like a podcast or random comment somewhere barely anyone will ever really see and is hard to site for use elsewhere. Internet connection always on for singleplayer? REALLY?

Witcher 2 has no DRM btw and apparently did well. Oh yeah, and it's a fantastic ass game, so that helps.

This type of DRM, or painfully obvious DRM in general, is the stupidest shit on the planet. I thought Ubisoft had come to that realization but here we are again. Not like I'm getting the game or anything but I don't feel my outrage is misplaced. It's just so dumb.

UbiSoft doesn't give two shits about the PC gamer. It was noticed in the past with the retardation of the Rainbow Six & Ghost Recon series, turning hardcore tactical shooters which had a huge following into you standard arcade shooters in the likes of CoD, and with their draconic DRMs.

Assassins Creed is like their only saving grace really, and I bet giving the license to someone else, would make it a better game. Rayman is the only bright spot on the radar from them. Well, we will see what the future brings ...

Here's a tip Ubisoft, 'any' form of DRM doesn't do anything to piracy, at all. You possibly add a day? Maybe 3? To the time it takes people to eliminate it from your game so it's playable for free. Why do you bother, it must cost money and man hours to develop these DRM solutions. IF you think it's worth it because stopping people from getting it day one means they go out and buy the game, I don't get that feeling at all from that situation, and it's easy to tell that it frustrates people way more than it helps in any way.

Also, this driver game looks really lame. Driver was one of the few games I played on the playstation at the time and Driver was ALL about being chased through an alley way hitting cones and boxes/paper and then making a cool replay from it or from just dicking around trying to make something cool in the replay etc. Besides the kinda offputting 'coma' idea, the rest of what has been shown from the game looks really terrible and I don't feel like this should be called a Driver game at all. They payed for the name I guess but there are better things you could label this game, rather than tack on whatever names you have floating around just cause you got some lame guy in there called Tanner that almost no one gave a shit about, or jericho etc.

Waiting for the announcement that the PC version of From Dust requires 'always on' internet connection.

Might explain why they delayed it on the PC.

So does this mean that Assassins Creed:Brotherhood sold worse than AC2?  AC:B featured almost no drm as you only had to connect to the server once.  I had presumed it would have sold better because of this, was it the opposite effect?

If so, I am shocked.  BTW, although I have no doubt hackers will crack this game in a week, HAWX 2 has yet to be cracked.  Shittier games don't seem to get cracked, which doesn't matter anyway because pirates would never have bought it because... they are pirates.

Man, I really though DRM-less games had caught up with the Witcher 2 advertising this feature.  After the lawsuit and now this, I no longer believe so.

This is really the key question, everybody else is just presuming one way or another, but, really, why would a publisher take out DRM, and then put it back in, unless they had a reason to? The reason you propose is the simplest one.

I bought Assassin's Creed 2 on the PC, the DRM was never a problem. And it DID put of piracy for that game for a month, which I'm sure sold some copies.
Again. Don't like DRM? Don't buy games that have it. If you pirate it because it has DRM to prove a point, you don't have a point.

Then don't buy it. Simple as that. If you pirate it, you prove that there is need for DRM.

I wonder why no one besides Ubisoft goes through such lengths - running servers 24/7 for mediocre games is certainly not cost-effective. Generally speaking, why Ubisoft of all publishers feels entitled to play the role of DRM vanguard is beyond me. Just don't release PC versions at all, problem solved.

Utterly baffling. Always-on does nothing but harm legitimate customers. It doesn't even stealth attack second hand sales like most DRM. The cracked version will not need a connection. Period. God, Ubisoft is run by morons.

And Ubi lost another customer.... Me!!

And to the guy, or guys that states that piracy proves DRM is needed. I don't think you need to be online all the time if you pirate this game, so making it harder for the supporters that actually shell up cash for the game should be prof DRM is needed? Now thats a strange argument.

In the end, all these games will be pirated, so to make it difficult for the guys that support the product is probably not the right way to go.

As for me, as long as I have to be online to play a game i payed for, especially since the only game i 'play' onilne is CS, the companies will have lost me as a customer, even if the game is fantastic, since this is me voting with my cash.

so what should UBIsoft and other publishers do then. just not even try to protect their software. should they just put out all software with no copy protection at all and just hope that not to many millions of people play the copied version.

First of all, you could play WoW offline if you wanted. It would just be a huge, empty world with nobody in it. Second, the reason that DRM harms the legitimate consumer is because the best we can hope for is that it affects nothing. If there is ever any problem, then the only people who are hurt are the people who actually bought it. Pirates have taken the DRM out so they don't give a crap. Any scenario that harms their legitimate customers while providing only a modest inconvenience to the hackers is inherently unsavory.

I closed my PayPal account after the shit that recently went down. It's not such a great leap from there to Ubisoft.

They really need to learn that the best business is in providing incentives for buying it, not trying to punish people for stealing it.

Wow, there was very little interest in this to begin with. Way to drive that small amount of interest down even further Ubisoft.
