First Impressions: Kane & Lynch 2

The next game from Io Interactive was in our office and we lived to tell the tale.

As game developers attempt to find new ways to make gun combat seem more violent and frightening than ever before, it's only natural that the camera has started to go through a lot of changes. Some games try to make things shaky and unstable, attempting to reflect the unpredictable movement and frantic feel of documentary footage. Io Interactive's latest, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, is taking that grimy feel one step further with a series of video filters that gives the action a lo-fi intensity that makes it hard to look away. Representatives for Io and Square-Enix dropped by our office earlier this week to show off a couple of levels and talk a bit about the setup.

Bright lights will cause the image to streak, explosions will cause it to pixelate.
Bright lights will cause the image to streak, explosions will cause it to pixelate.
Perhaps the biggest change this time is that Dog Days is Lynch's story, with players playing as Lynch in single-player games. At the outset, Lynch and his onetime associate Kane have separated. Lynch lives in Shanghai, has a girlfriend named Xiu, and rolls with a crew of smalltimers pulling lightweight crimes. When his crew stumbles onto a potentially huge job, Lynch decides to call in some backup by contacting Kane. Kane, for his part, sees the big job as a way to end his criminal career, and makes plans to send whatever money he makes to his daughter. Of course, things don't exactly go according to plan, and the game focuses on a short period--like a couple of days, tops--as the reunited duo get into, out of, and back into trouble.

Dog Days ditches the squad tactics from the first game, which feels like a wise move. Though we weren't able to play it, we were told that a lot of work has gone into making the shooting feel a lot better than it did in the previous game. Both of these changes seem pretty key, as both were very much in your way during the first game. Without the squad, Dog Days focuses more on direct action, and the end result looks a lot like other co-op-based third-person shooters, like Army of Two: The 40th Day, which, weirdly enough, also takes place in Shanghai. Though grenades are no longer a part of the Kane & Lynch universe, you can grab fire extinguishers and toss them at enemies while shooting them to create an improvised explosion.

Lynch probably needs his pills.
Lynch probably needs his pills.
Other gameplay mechanics include a "down not dead" system that, sort of like other third-person shooters, puts you in a downed state if you take too many hits. It sounds like you'll be able to recover on your own if you can get behind some cover and not take damage for awhile, though as it's a co-op shooter, you can obviously get a little help from your partner, as well. Also, the fragile alliance mode, which was the online multiplayer in the first game, will return in K&L2.

So far, the game looks like it fits into the co-operative third-person shooter (with cover!) subgenre just fine. But its visual style really sets it apart. It goes beyond basic film grain and other types of camera noise in favor of digital noise that makes the whole thing look like it was shot on a pretty average digital camera. Bright lights totally blow out the view, causing big bands of color to streak down the frame. When you take damage to see violent explosions, the view violently pixelates like the camera is having trouble capturing the image due to the force of the blast. It's an amazingly effective visual style that makes everything look very intense. There's nothing quite like it.

So, yes, I'm very interested to learn more about Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, thanks for asking. Of course, I would have said that about the first game before it was released, too. We'll probably get to see the game again in a couple of months, and it's still scheduled to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2010.

Nice to see Jeff taking the high road. He's a journalist, and true journalism needs impartiality, and nowadays very rarely gets it.

If it weren't for this game, there wouldn't be a Giantbomb. Why do you guys want Jeff to bring that up? Seriously, you all need to grow up and put the past behind. What's done is done, end of fucking story. And why should he hold a grudge about it? He's happy he gets to do his own thing now. I don't think it's a big deal for him anymore. He's doing a preview of the game, and I think that should be enough; a lot of you need to lighten up and let the man do his job.

I never played or paid attention to the first one, and I've been hearing a lot of mixed reactions from it. Some liked it, some didn't. But from what I've read on this preview and seen from the images, looks pretty interesting. If they'll show some footage in the future, that would be great.

I thought they were Dead Men. Whatever happened to that? What, they're UnDead Men now? I think this is like getting back in touch with people from high school you never really liked. So you go to that goddamn reunion and it's all awkward and you don't know what the hell you're doing there... Jeff my man, wear a space suit and a cowboy hat in the review, that's the only way to get through it.

Well I respect Jeff for keeping his dignity and telling the truth about Kane and Lynch 1, and I am quite happy how it turned out because it led into this fantastic site being made. I have no hard feelings for Kane and Lynch 2 either just hope that it becomes a good game and that Jeff doesn't have to give it high scores for fear of being fired from this site that he helped make. It doesn't matter, it's all in the past now. Game spot has become wide known and I don't blame them for taking bribes here and there because as a gaming site it needs to have a good relations with developers and such. (so they can get more content and faster then other sites can). It's a double edged blade I tell ya.

"

Great comparison. Only that it is shit.

Jeff has no reason to explain the whole situation to anyone on the Internet. Who the fuck cares? Isn't NOT posting about the whole deal (which is also not true, as he clearly aludes to the previous game and controversy towards the end of the news) an indicator that he's not making any beef about it anymore? Writing an unnecessary paragraph concerning the whole situation would be dumb, and I bet people like you would start posting that Jeff decided to take a hit on Gamespot and C-NET, and then proceed to blast him for acting childish and being on the same level as C-NET.

Not to mention that we don't even know anything 100% about the case and we won't know until Mr. Gerstmann speaks about. Which he shouldn't do. Give the man a fucking break.

"

take it easy hot shot nobody said nothin about explaining his life story.
not many people have been fired for being righteous, then taken some apostles and built somethin cooler.
so you dont hafta give a middle finger to everybody because they're curious about it.
i'm just sayin a simple sentence about it from Gerstmann is a cool thing to do for the homeboys and homegirls of the Gerstmann fanclub.

if Satan bumped into God at Walmart, wouldn't you be all "yo Satan was that awkward or what?"
but whatever, Jeff'll probably mention it in a Bombcast or somethin.

Also, let's calm down with the whole GameSpot stuff. If Jeff wants to talk about it, he'll talk about it, though I doubt he does. The past is in the past. Let's leave it that way and get over it. Making references to it, I admit, is fun but stupid shit like this:

@Duckbutter

said:

is not necessary. There's no reason for him to tell any of how he feels about this. This is a preview for Kane & Lynch 2. What may or may not have happened with the original has nothing to do with that. "
if you and me and a bunch of friends were sitting around and then my cock exploded with confetti and rainbows and bacon and circus clowns shooting out of it, then yea i dont have to explain it because its my cock. but we're friends. so the least i can do is say "yea i know its weird but it aint a big deal to me"instead of pretending it didn't happen. regardless of whether its a just a Kane and Lynch 2 preview or not, how hard is it to type: "just so you know, the whole Kane and Lynch 2 thing aint a big deal over here at Giantbomb, folks. it's just another game review like the rest."or"i know you're all wondering how i feel about the KnL 1 thing two years later but i cant talk about it for legal reasons.  and i'm sorry for not liking Coldpay."  it aint hard. It's pretty dumb that you feel the need to see that written in this preview. In fact, not mentioning that and just previewing the game like it's just another game better accomplishes the same exact thing.

Not too interested in this game. Seems like it will just be another 3rd person shooter, except with a different visual style. Hopefully there will be a quick look for this game in the next couple of months.

Also, when are we going to let the "controversy" behind this series die? It's really getting old.

haha wow... i said "so it begins..." at the beginning and didn't quite realize what would begin!
Sure GS firing Jeff brought Giantbomb, blah blah blah... but seriously look at the preview and tell me how he's still upset about the situation. It's probably water under a bridge for him and he's doing his job professionally. He doesn't need to justify what happened and how he feels to a bunch of unknowns on the internet. He may not even be at a liberty to discuss it anyway!
Let it go guys and judge this game for what it is and not what the previous one did.

Back to the game, it seems to be coming along ok and i do like those visual effects. We'll have to see how the gameplay holds up

As if this complete idiocy and fucktardery in the comments wouldn't be enough, you can bet that a billion articles are going to show up on various websites trying to be funny with the headline "Jeff Gerstmann fired from Giant Bomb after Kane and Lynch 2 Review!"

And once again with Kane and Lynch 3.

And with the movie.

Jeff's a videogame journalist talking about a videogame. It's not that weird (yes, I know the story - but that was years ago and under different circumstances).

I really wanted to like the first Kane and Lynch but never got on with it... I'd rather they put out a new Hitman before a new K&L but this series does have the potential to be OK. Especially with the two very unique characters they've created and partnered up. I don't really have very high hopes for it though. Even if they fix a lot of the issues with the first game it could still end up being just a very generic third person shooter. We'll see!

(... I think my low-enthusiasm for this mainly comes from me wanting a new Hitman game.)

I really enjoyed the first one, despite all the controversy around it. The cover system was the only real annoyance. I actually quite liked the aiming, made it feel more realistic and unique. I hope they don't make it rock steady so you can pull off head shots on everyone. As long as the cover system works and the friendly AI is as good as it's supposed to be then this will be a very good game.

How old are you? I mean really. Grow the fuck up.

@Everyone else:The only reason some of you are still bothered by this is because the inside story never went public.

Kevin Van Ord, Brian Ekberg and Ryan Navarro were all there at Gamespot for as long as Jeff, Ryan and Brad were. And are still there now(EDIT: I forgot to say, except for Alex of course). They are STILL cool guys, and I listen to both of Gamespots weekly podcasts because of the quality that continues to come out of these podcasts. Some of the new people are cool too, Tor thorson and Homer Rabara being a couple of them.

Yes it was contraversial, but now it's just old news. And I'm glad it happened. As good as Gamespot is, it could never fill the whole in my heart that Giantbomb fills.
The Bombsquad and some (Some=A large chunk) of the Giantbomb community are really awesome, each contributing in their own way to the experience that we know today as Giantbomb.com.

So please people, stop hating and start forgetting. Because you only hurt Giantbombs rep if you bitch and grudge over this stuff.

Ah ah ah. Don't be so brash because it got Jeff fired. The gameplay was mediocre, sure. But the characters and "raw" feel to the story was a breath of fresh air. They didn't mind taking risks that would be "offensive", it's like the "No Russian" level on MW2 except more controversial. "
Since when did I mention anything about Jeff?  I found the first game to be very middle-of-the-road, despite it's "gritty" premise.  Attitude takes a back seat to compelling gameplay.

I really, really, really want to see the outcome of all these fancy filters and effects they are using for this unique effect. It sounds really cool, from the sound of Giantbombs and Gamespots (I know, I know...) first looks, and I've actually been thinking of that sort of style camera for a while for one of my own projects. Would be nice to see what it looks like.

" Why all the sensitive talk around here?  Fuck Kane and Lynch 2... Fuck Eidos... Fuck Io Interactive...  MildMolasses you are completely right. Jeff and his story completely overshadows anything anybody has to say about this game, and that's exactly the way it should be. Everybody that has subscribed to this site knows exactly why they came here. We all love it and we all visit it for a reason. We know the reason we're here. The people that work at GiantBomb and their personalities are a huge reason why many of us came here. They are as important to many of us that visit as the games they cover.  You really think people come here for their coverage? To be completely honest I don't really care for most of the content as far as previews and pre-release information is posted here. I care about the way it's presented by the people that work here. Jeff, Ryan, Vinny, Brad and the rest of the crew have amazing personalities that give a unique twist to alot of the content produced here. I can get better coverage on bigger sites. I don't even need to name any sites out there that are bigger with better coverage and huge amounts of information in them. I come here for them. I and many like me have come here and migrated with Jeff and the crew because we like what they offer in way of personality and charisma.  "
Just to want to say this post hits the nail on the head for the most part. Well, I happen to like the previews for a few games but other than that, these are just the facts. As for a few other commenters:

Jeff's coverage of Kane and Lynch is hurting Giant Bomb's integrity? Please. I highly doubt he is sitting there writing this up like, "Oh man, I'm totally gonna get back at these dudes by like, pretending to take their game seriously."
