First Impressions: Kane & Lynch 2

The next game from Io Interactive was in our office and we lived to tell the tale.

As game developers attempt to find new ways to make gun combat seem more violent and frightening than ever before, it's only natural that the camera has started to go through a lot of changes. Some games try to make things shaky and unstable, attempting to reflect the unpredictable movement and frantic feel of documentary footage. Io Interactive's latest, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, is taking that grimy feel one step further with a series of video filters that gives the action a lo-fi intensity that makes it hard to look away. Representatives for Io and Square-Enix dropped by our office earlier this week to show off a couple of levels and talk a bit about the setup.

Bright lights will cause the image to streak, explosions will cause it to pixelate.
Bright lights will cause the image to streak, explosions will cause it to pixelate.
Perhaps the biggest change this time is that Dog Days is Lynch's story, with players playing as Lynch in single-player games. At the outset, Lynch and his onetime associate Kane have separated. Lynch lives in Shanghai, has a girlfriend named Xiu, and rolls with a crew of smalltimers pulling lightweight crimes. When his crew stumbles onto a potentially huge job, Lynch decides to call in some backup by contacting Kane. Kane, for his part, sees the big job as a way to end his criminal career, and makes plans to send whatever money he makes to his daughter. Of course, things don't exactly go according to plan, and the game focuses on a short period--like a couple of days, tops--as the reunited duo get into, out of, and back into trouble.

Dog Days ditches the squad tactics from the first game, which feels like a wise move. Though we weren't able to play it, we were told that a lot of work has gone into making the shooting feel a lot better than it did in the previous game. Both of these changes seem pretty key, as both were very much in your way during the first game. Without the squad, Dog Days focuses more on direct action, and the end result looks a lot like other co-op-based third-person shooters, like Army of Two: The 40th Day, which, weirdly enough, also takes place in Shanghai. Though grenades are no longer a part of the Kane & Lynch universe, you can grab fire extinguishers and toss them at enemies while shooting them to create an improvised explosion.

Lynch probably needs his pills.
Lynch probably needs his pills.
Other gameplay mechanics include a "down not dead" system that, sort of like other third-person shooters, puts you in a downed state if you take too many hits. It sounds like you'll be able to recover on your own if you can get behind some cover and not take damage for awhile, though as it's a co-op shooter, you can obviously get a little help from your partner, as well. Also, the fragile alliance mode, which was the online multiplayer in the first game, will return in K&L2.

So far, the game looks like it fits into the co-operative third-person shooter (with cover!) subgenre just fine. But its visual style really sets it apart. It goes beyond basic film grain and other types of camera noise in favor of digital noise that makes the whole thing look like it was shot on a pretty average digital camera. Bright lights totally blow out the view, causing big bands of color to streak down the frame. When you take damage to see violent explosions, the view violently pixelates like the camera is having trouble capturing the image due to the force of the blast. It's an amazingly effective visual style that makes everything look very intense. There's nothing quite like it.

So, yes, I'm very interested to learn more about Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, thanks for asking. Of course, I would have said that about the first game before it was released, too. We'll probably get to see the game again in a couple of months, and it's still scheduled to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2010.

You clearly misunderstand my point.  Jeff is a good reviewer, but he didn't like the 1st game. Granted, MOST reviewers didn't like the 1st game.... but Jeff's review generated a lot of bad press for the game as a result of him getting fired.  No doubt Jeff's impression of the sequel will hold a lot more weight than most reviewers as a result of that controversy.   So if the Dev's were just spitting out a re-skinned version of K&L1 then chances are Jeff will not like it yet again.  However, the fact that they went out of their way to give him an early look, indicates to me that they are confident that they made a much better game this time around.  We will see how it turns out... but I just think that if this was going to be a half-hearted sequel, then they would try to avoid showing the game off to a reviewer who's likely to have negative things to say about it. I think that they expect Jeff may actually LIKE this game. If they weren't confident in this game, then they would probably give the first look to another outlet that would give it a more positive spin. "
Though I did misunderstand what you initially meant, you are right.  Everyone is going to be paying close attention to what Jeff has to say about this one. Because of that his opinion holds far more weight right now than anyone else.

To be honest, I simply read your comment and posted a quick reply attempting to be... clever i suppose.  To be honest, I'd rather not get too involved in the internet fuss over this until his review is much closer to hitting.

That is, IF he reviews it.

The fact of the matter is Jeff is, and always has been, a professional.  If Jeff is to review the game, I really don't believe he'll let those very unfortunate past events have an affect on how he reviews the game.

I think this preview shows how much a stand up guy Jeff is.  I'm sure there is some hard feelings, but business is business.  Maybe IO will remember Jeff's comments and make a really good game.   And if it is good I'm sure Jeff will be (and always is) a professional and give it a good score.

I hope Jeff Gerstmann reviews this game, not for controversy, but for me to see his reaction to the game and see how mature he can be about (I know he'll show through and give a decent review and prove dumb asses wrong.).

Enough with the "will Jeff be professional enough to review it"-comments. Whatever you guys say, I think this looks like a shite ass game.

And if anyone has some hard proof that Eidos was the reason Jeff was fired, please, share. Conspiracy theories and speculations can only take a subject so far.
I mean... I want signed letters, recorded voices and/or public announcements, not just "it's gotta be - it's fact!"

I trust Jeff's judgement, he is a proffesional, there is no room for "biased" opinions really.

People in Eidos are not stupid, they know very damn well, that first Kane and Lynch wasnt a great game, thats why i think its good to see them taking further steps to improve the gameplay.

The first game looked really promising, the characters Kane and Lynch made the game seem like a movie.  Then the game came out and aside getting horrible review scores it looked like a glitchy late gen PS2 3rd person shooter.  Also some people from IO brought it on button mashing to play against Alex and someone else of the gamespot crew and they CHEATED to win.  Vinny remembers this, he was hosting at the time.

The second game again has captured my intrest with its psycopathic and criminal characters Kane and Lynch.  I want to see more of the game.  I'm curious to see if the shooter/cover controls have been refined and if the graphics make it look like a 360/ps3 game.

I'm actually looking forward to this game because putting the Jeff Gerstmann controversy aside, Kane & Lynch is pretty good. Sure, there are some flaws here and there but overall I enjoyed it. Let's hope Dog Days will be better.

First, this game looks like a game made for people obsessed with The Boondock Saints.

Secondly, I'm not getting too worked up about it. The first one sucked, this camera crap with this one seems like a gimmick.

Third, good job taking the high road here Jeff, but I am interested to see if you review it.

Fourth, suck it Eidos, the only game you guys have had anything to do with that wasn't trash recently was Batman.

Fif, I am shocked that they even BROUGHT this game to Giant Bomb.

So here's the thing... The first game was possibly, the worst game of all time. I thought that "invisible boxes" around objects were a thing of the past... The 20th century perhaps. But, then K&L 1 was released... The only game I have played in YEARS where you can't shoot a guy behind cover... Even if you have line of sight! K&L is a pathetic franchise.... Do they really think anyone will buy 2? Really? So to all you game developers and publishers... When a franchise fails... For the love of god... LET IT DIE!!!

Guys ... I think both Eidos and Jeff are over this whole Gamespot thing. Otherwise they wouldn't drop by the Giantbomb office to show off the game.  It's totally unnessecary to stir that up everytime something about K&L is posted and frankly I think Jeff might be pretty sick of that.

And duders, it's over. It's not like Jeff is going to be fired from Giant Bomb. He's working for a better company. And we know that we will get an unbiased review, so lets not worry about anything. Plus that was years ago. I'm sure that they have made up from anything that allegedly happened.

I think it's okay to not hate on the game right away.   if it wasn't for Eidos, we wouldn't have this wonderful website that i'm sure most of us visit more then once a day.  we shouldn't thank them by any means, but at least give them a chance.  they might do better this time.
