Here's What Won - GOTY 2023

Want a quick and dirty rundown of what all won every illustrious (and dubious) award? This is for you.

No Caption Provided

Now that the finale from the live event in Los Angeles has been secured and uploaded to the site, we now have a (mostly) completed picture of everything from the sixteenth annual Giant Bomb Game of the Year festivities.

Why do I say "mostly"? Well, for one, we still need the second half of each staff member's personal top 10.

Secondly, if you haven't heard, GOTY GUEST LISTS ARE RETURNING THIS YEAR! You should be seeing them pop up on the site during the holiday break. So, stay tuned for that!

Thirdly, the Community GOTY voting will begin on MONDAY! The submission form will go live on the front page at the same time as Game Mess Mornings.

Also, if you want to see a bunch of photos from the live event including many from behind the scenes and after the cameras shut off, you can see those HERE!

Based on this, the community lists should now be Top 5 instead of Top 10. Just a thought.

Great haul for robocop 🤖

Anyway thanks for the write up. Good to see Guest and Community lists coming!

On the other hand, it has never been easier to fill up those ten slots than this year. Plus you get to see more hidden gems in the tally.

Legitimately forgot that Starfield came out until those recent articles about Bethesda going on a jag about people playing it wrong or whatever.

From what I understand, the staff will have full lists eventually. As for your own list for the Community GOTY, you can put whatever you want on it, but it'll still be a max of 10.

Haven't seen the discussions yet, what do the numbers represent in the top ten list? Is GOTY point based now?

Like last year, yes. It's a weighted vote similar to Eurovision.

Huh. I don't remember that at all, but now that I think about it, I don't think I ever watched all of last year's deliberations.

The House of Hope in Baldur's Gate 3 got robbed for consideration for best moment though because it's missable unless you go down a certain path with one character, I can see how they all missed it. It has (BG3 Act 3 spoilers) A MUSICAL BOSS FIGHT IN WHICH YOU FIGHT A DEVIL WITH 666 HEALTH. It's so incredible. The devil jovially sings along to the encounter-specific music that's playing during the fight. It's so much fun and ties a neat bow on all of the stuff involving devils, who are basically a bunch of slimy contract lawyers, in the game. There's a whole bunch of other stuff in this sequence to talk about but it's a lot so this is all I'll say. In a game full of amazing moments, this one sticks out a lot.

The Zelda moment they mentioned would have been up there for me but I accidentally sequence broke the whole thing so it wasn't quite as impactful. Still pretty great though.

I mostly only remember it exists because people love to use that fancy looking Starfield controller as a set piece in YouTube thumbnails. That controller is still probably the best bit related to that game.

@ben_h: I also accidentally sequence broke the reveal in the first handful of hours after leaving the starting area. Still blew my mind at first but I still had over 100 hours of game left. lol.
