Maybe Around The Corner: Pikmin 3, Thief 4

Ye olde rumor mill suggests two highly anticipated sequels are on the verge of being revealed.

Right, looks just like a Pikmin. Surrrrrrrrre...
Right, looks just like a Pikmin. Surrrrrrrrre...
Quick, tell me what the Pikmin and Thief franchises have to do with each other, and I will award you with the cookie of your choosing.

Time's up! No cookie for you. The answer is: both series have new installments rumored to be on the verge of seeing announcements.

First up is the last-page teaser in the latest issue of Edge, which simply shows a full-page spread of grass (the kind on your lawn) with the simple phrase "Next month." GoNintendo busted out the magnifying glass, and points to a small purple shape on the right side of the page that they claim indicates the reveal will be related to a new Pikmin game. That seems like a small leap in logic, but then, Nintendo did mention briefly at last year's E3 that a new Pikmin is in the works. With the next E3 looming and the previous Pikmin games appearing in enhanced form on the Wii, now seems like as good a time as any to bust out a new one.

Shifting gears to a series that's about as different from Pikmin as you could possibly find, Shacknews offers a trail of evidence via various Eidos comments and advertisements (the latter again appearing in Edge) that the company will announce the next Thief game, said to be in development at its Montreal studio, a week from today on Monday the 11th. This one seems like way more of a sure thing; the clues offered by Eidos itself are almost irrefutable.

I'm going to be painfully honest here: other than some brief prerelease preview coverage, I've never played a game in either one of these franchises. Go on, judge me. Better late than never, though, right? Are you excited for either one of these, if they get announced?

Thief?  4?

*eyes tear up*

Really?

I won't judge you Brad, but you're missing out.  At least with the first two.  Which makes me wonder if 4 will be like 3, but oh well.

Pikmin was fun, too.  At least when it didn't go all STUPID-RTS-A.I. on you and make everybody drown in the damned water.

I played a bit of Pikmin but never any thief. I've always been interested in thief though so we'll see how this next one looks.

I am going to be very excited if there is a new Pikmin. And a new Thief for that matter.

I'm not a 'fan' of the Pikimin series, but I too would say that looks like a Pikimin in the grass. Sorta.

Let's just say that Thief: The Dark Project was using how much noise you were making, how fast you were going, and how well you blended in to the shadows when all you punks thought Metal Gear Solid was amazing for using vision cones.  Thief is the stealth game all others try to be like at this point, at least when it comes to how the game handles detection and stuff.

If the Thief series is ever going to make a come back then it has to be built from the ground up, names like Warren Spector and Randy Smith are not on the list of makers anymore and they were the people who made Thief a star in its own way.

I think it's safe to say Pikmin 3 is very close from being shown via screens, I expect a few shots in next months Edge at the very least, and for the game to be playable at E3.

Miyamoto has a good relationship with the magazine. He drew this cover art for the 100th issue.

I'm playing through Thief II right now. 4's announcement does not interest me as I have no reason to be confident about how they handle the franchise. The same goes for Deus Ex 3. Maybe they'll be a pleasant surprise, but I'm not letting myself get hyped over the possibilities after Invisible War and Deadly Shadows. I was extremely pleased with what they were showing of IW, then it was such a let down, yet I slowly got hyped for Thief 3 figuring they might have learnt from their mistakes. In the end, it was a marginal improvement in terms of the engine, with just as many design flaws and only barely saved from one person's work (The Cradle) which didn't really make up for the rest of the game's quality. Yay for Pikmin 3 (how do you even pronounce "Surrrrrrrrre" btw? Maybe it should say "Suuuuuuuuure" instead). Also, GoNintendo links to a different source, and that source links to another source, why credit GoNintendo as the finders?

Let's make it new. Combine Thief with Pikmin. Omar uses the pikmin as various tools and weapons varying from arrows for his bow to lock picks to daggers to distractions. As a distraction, omar sends out a yellow pikmin in one direction with a bomb-rock. While the no-good aliens go after the pikmin, Omar slips through the shadows, launches a pikmin right at the bomb-carrier's head creating a gorey mess for the maid to clean up. What is Omar after this time? Food? Gold? Perhaps some more pellets to feed his addiction?

No. A sword.

Seppuku time. Honor must be regained.

The original Pikmin is almost half as sexy as you, Brad, so naturally I jizz in my pants every single time I play it. It's the closest thing to a mate in your league that you could ever find.

Agreed.  I believe I read that the group who may be making the next Thief are the same team that is working on Deus Ex 3.  Since we will see that title before Thief, I'll gauge my expectations for Thief 4 off how well the new Deus Ex plays.  Just because it's being made doesn't mean the final product will be anything we want to play.  I hope it will be good, but I'm not going to get excited just yet.  And, there is a question of what influence new masters SquareEnix will have on the company as a whole.

I played both Thief (not sure which one), and Pikmin 1 + 2, and both franchises deserve a sequel. To bad pikmin 3 will be a Wii game, which means i won´t play it...

Thief is the only game seires that did true stealth justice. Pikmin was always just a simple game that was a lot of fun to play

I would welcome sequels for both games.

Why bump a one year old thread?

And by the way.  That Thief 4 website looks really fake.  Well actually, I'm just hoping it's fake as seeing a 4 in place of a E makes me shake my head in wonderment.
