Mega Man 9 Out Next Week, Proto Man DLC 10/6

North American dates for Mega Man 9 confirmed.

I have a sinking feeling that I'm going to absolutely hate Mega Man 9. On paper, it sounds like the greatest game ever made. Here, print out this next sentence and it'll prove that I'm right...

Hey dude, we're making a new Mega Man game but it's going to deliberately be like the old Mega Man games.

...see? Doesn't that sound like the best thing to ever happen in the history of ever? The thing people keep forgetting, though, is that those Mega Man games--and really, most old-ass 8-bit games--are way harder than today's games. And everything I've seen on Mega Man 9 makes it sound like it's going for "old-school toughness" and all that.

That doesn't sound like a "back in my day, games were better" nostalgia trip, that sounds like "hey, if I die by falling off these disappearing platforms one more time I'm going to go burn down a movie theater and claim that I got the idea because the marquee said Burn After Reading on it!"

Actually, I had that idea while we were driving into work this morning and it has nothing to do with Mega Man 9. Mega Man 9 will probably be OK. It's got three different release dates, one for each platform.

Wii: 9/22
PSN: 9/25
XBLA: 10/1

In further Mega Man 9 news, GamesRadar got the goods on downloadable content for the game. The week of 10/6 will see the addition of Proto Man on all three platforms. His shield can block most standard bullets, but he'll get knocked back twice as hard when he does get hit. Sounds like a rough trade to me. That'll be around $2 on each platform.

I agree, Mega Man is far to punishing for me.  I'll pass on it most likely.

First post ever on Giant Bomb. Jeff, I have to disagree. I think that challenge of the good 'ol days is what gives these games life. The mega man series will really never get old , because you can always make another kind of robot. Hell, you can even make a really funny ripoff of the Mega Man series, and make some insanely funny robot bosses.

I don't think I'll mind the mega man game being that hard, I love those games enough to play through it.  I'll probably have to buy this just because how attached I am to the original series.

It will probably be ridiculously hard, but at least I know that I won't throw a tantrum and cry like a baby once I run out of lives this time around. I'll just drink my self into a stupor! Oh maturity, how I've waited for thee.

It is really hard....That's what she....whatever!

Yeah, Mega Man is difficult and I probably am going to play it, but I am not going to get far and I won't want to probably.

They're still making it like now now, so maybe some of the design sensibility will be more accessible to those who don't want to put in the hours.  Design sensibility is a lot harder to copy than 8-bit graphics.  I guess we'll find out when it comes out.

2 dollars for Protoman? Used to be back in my day that you would unlock these guys instead of buying em.  But I do like the idea of continuing franchises like this instead of making everything go 3d.  Now if only they made Ninja turtles 5.

Personally I know I got tired of NES Mega Man games after 4.  How?  Because I actually rented Mega Man 5&6 for NES and couldn't stand playing the things, BACK WHEN THEY WERE NEW.  Now that they're making a game that's basically the same old crap I was bored of 18 years ago... it's basically just 18 years worse-looking.

To me it seems Mega Man 9 is for kiddies on a retro trip that are going to experience a new NES game for the first time.

I disagree. I don't like the idea of games regressing back to old tech. We've made advancements since the 8bit era, we should take advantage of those advancements. The 8-bit games were great back in the day, but their time has long since passed and yeilded to the 16 bit, and 3D eras. I would have preferred an updated 2D mega man with HD sprites, kinda like Street Fighter II HD Remix. I don't want to play a brand new mega man games thats exactly like the old ones, If I really wanted to play an 8bit Mega Man game, I'll play Mega Man 2.  Hell it also would have been cool if they used the 8-bit art from the games but presented it in an updated and stylized way, like Pacman world chamionchip did. But a full on NES wannabe? No thank you.

Mega Man 9 is just a blatant cash-in on old school "I wanna be just like the angry video game nerd" hipsters, and people longing for nostalgia, as this game probably took little to no effort to make seeing as they largely used recycled 8-bit graphics... and anything new would have been easy to add these days since, as I said, it's in 8-bit.

So yeah.. TL;DR: I'll pass.

This is awesome all around except for that I only have an Xbox and no Wii or PS3 so I will have to wait longer!  Ohh well, I know it will be more than worth it.  Can't wait!  Mega Man 2 was one of my favorite games when I was a kid so I hope to hell it does that game justice.

Ohh and @Mooshu,

You obviously never had the unfortunate displeasure of playing any of the 3D mega-man games lol

Mega Man 1 was stupid hard. Mega Man 2 was just about perfect. Mega Man 3 was also quite good. I never played Mega Mans 4-8. If Mega Man 9 is Mega Man 2 hard, that will be good. If it is Mega Man 1 hard, that will be stupid.

I absolutely loved Mega Man back in the day, it was a franchise that until his SNES debut, you couldn't go wrong with for the most part. All the kiddie anime themes and seriously horrible wussy voice overs of the newer games totally killed any enjoyment for me later on.

Back in the day Mega Man was as bad ass as your imagination would allow, but Capcom took that away later in the series and turned him into a fairy ass pussy voiced over by a girl. (Or if it wasnt a female voice actor it sure as hell sounded like one.) Lets see if they can reverse the trend.

I suppose a saving grace and possible purchase point for me could be if they can somehow come up with some seriously catchy midi music for the game. As cheesy as the old games sound is, I can still hear alot of the stage music in my head at will... its that good.

I am absolutely not interested in Mega Man 9. I hated the punishing difficulty of the older Mega Man games, and MM9 seems no different. I'll stick to my Mega Man X series.

Big Rigs > Mega Man X series

Although I did enjoy X8 quite a bit, but mostly because the way they did the graphics was incredibly high-quality and gorgeous.

Other than that, Mega Man core series is where the real gamer is separated from the others.

In terms of 8-bit era games, I always thought that the Mega Man series was on the easier side. At least all the games were beatable. In fact, Mega Man 2 was the first game I ever beat and still one of my favorites to this day.

When I saw the NES shaped case I really thought they were going to release a NES cart of the game also.. how awesome would that be.. but then I found a blog that showed the cart opened with a DVD inside.. there went my dream. I miss the thumb blisters from the NES controller.

I'm just a little nervous because it looks like they're going to try too hard to be difficult, a la Ninja Gaiden 2 or some of the bad Tomb Raider games.

Mega Man games weren't that hard. Sure, they were harder than almost any game now, but you can say that about a lot of Nintendo games. There were only a couple parts in the old Mega Man games that felt cheap (the Quick Man beams, the falling part in Mega Man 3, some of the block puzzles). Most deaths in Mega Man made you say "I should have done X" rather than "the best 10 players in the world could not possibly do that on their first try," which is why it was fun.

Also, thumbs down on the Proto Man crap. Mega gay. I don't care if it's ten cents, file non-content DLC firmly under "horse armor."

Huh? Jeff, your memory is a little bit rusty. Megaman 2 was one of the easiest NES games to complete. I can still finish it without using a continue on the Normal difficulty setting. Megaman 1 was the only game with "punishing" difficulty. The others in the series on the NES were pretty easy as well...much easier than the PSX's Megaman 8.

People are really kicking up a shitstorm about this ProtoMan costing $2, I say go to hell, $2 is nothing, over here a packet of crips (potato chips) can cost more than that. Besides, over here (the UK) 160 points is closer to $3.50. Seriously, the game only costs like $10 for you anyway (more like $16 here) so just shut the hell up, at least your getting a whole nother character to play the game with, who sounds like he plays a lot different to Mega Man.

At least it's not something totally inconsequential like Horse Armor, and at least it's cheap. I personally wont be buying protoman unless I end up with that many points leftover for some reason and i've finished the game with mega man, but thats because its near double the price here, and complaint is actually justified, but for $2, either buy him or dont it's a simple choice.

I actually miss those old games that are so hard they make you want to throw your console out the window and run over it with your car. They got me frustrated sure but they also made me take my anger out by playing hours on end until I finished the game several times with little problems.
And hey, maybe this will be one of the few XBLA titles that keeps my interest for more than a week or two.

The old Mega Man games are silly easy if you compare to loads of game on the NES, "old-school toughness" doesnt even exist in the Mega Man series. If the games had "old-school toughness" I sure wouldnt have finished 1-6.

Trojan, theres real "old-school toughness".

hopefully it'll be a little easier to play through with proto man, because right now megaman 9 is friggin difficult. as in, delete-the-game-after-seven-minutes-difficult. and it's like trial and error difficulty, not difficulty that can actually be overcome by, you know, skill. i mean technically it's still a solid game but my gosh it's challenging...well it appears as if i've gone off on a rant, so i'll take my leave now.
