Password Changing PS3 Firmware Update Available, PlayStation Network Still Down

The waiting game continues, but the firmware update marks an important step forward.

It only does everything...pretty soon, we hope.
It only does everything...pretty soon, we hope.

PlayStation Network is not back yet, but Sony took an important step towards changing that this afternoon by releasing an updated firmware, dubbed version 3.61, which will eventually force users to change their passwords.

"We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online," announced Sony Network Entertainment VP Eric Lempel on the PlayStation Blog today. "The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience."

Though many would hope otherwise, this update doesn't turn on multiplayer or bring back the store. It does, however, add an additional layer of security for PS3 going forward, as you will no longer be able to modify your account password anywhere but your own PS3 or a separately activated console.

The update, which like other system updates was prompted when I turned on the PS3, took me about 12 minutes to download and install, but seeing as how I was grabbing the much anticipated update alongside potentially millions of others also enjoying Sturday on the couch, your mileage may vary.

Once the update was applied, as anticipated, nothing changed. PSN is still down. Until PSN is back online, this firmware is nothing more than preparation. When PSN does return, I'll have to change my password--and so will you.

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

I'm cutting the cord on my PS3 so I don't really care anymore. Sorry, Download only developers of games I'd totally buy. Hopefully you aren't PSN exclusive because I aint buying nothing or going online with my PSN, possibly ever again.

I have other consoles and a computer, I think I'm good.

Weird... I just went into the other room to turn on the PS3 so I could download the update, and it was already on. I was certain it was off last night before bed. Did anybody else encounter this?

I always wonder about the American psn and how long it takes for you guys to download and install ps3 patches.

Took me about 2 minutes to download the patch over here.

Okay, I downloaded the update. But it never promt me to change my password. Then again, maybe the psn service has to be up first before I can change it. I believe I wrote an email that isn't even a real email, typo, so if I have to restore it that way, then that's stupid. I hope what they mean by downloaded content before on that psn account also includes videos and demos. That would enable me to change my password when it's back up here in canada. Does anyone know what's suppose to happen? Psn is still down and I better not lose my ability to use psn because I wrote in the wrong email due to a typo. If that were the case, i'll sell it right now and get a xbox 360 along with a blu ray player.

Thanks guys, I'm glad that me not letting PSN steal any more of my info bothers you haha

BTW I didn't say anything offensive, you guys can relax. I'm sure you don't actually care what I think- and really you shouldn't.

It needs to connect to the servers to change your password (since the data is stored there), the firmware is just the security update, once PSN comes online we will probably get hit with a phat CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD NOW! popup.

So you could technically wait on the firmware, but they released it a bit early so it doesn't congest the servers so hard, think of it like preinstalling, You can't use it until it actually launches, but you are ready to go!
