PlayStation Network Partially Coming Back Online this Week With New Security Measures

Also, you're getting some free stuff.

Welcome Back, Kotter. I mean, PSN.
Welcome Back, Kotter. I mean, PSN.
After more than a week of downtime, the result of a malicious hacker attack, Sony held a press conference in Japan to update an anxious public with the latest information and steps being taken to restore service to PlayStation Network. Perhaps more importantly, there's still no evidence credit card details were taken.

Sony says the trouble started following a "criminal cyber-attack" on a facility in San Diego. When the intrusion was discovered, PSN was brought down and security firms brought in to investigate. That investigation took several days, which Sony says explains why their criticized first response also took that long.

There are now additional securty measures now in place, including moving Sony's data center to a new location, adding multiple layers of security internally, hiring a chief information security officer and forcing password changes to occur via the primary PlayStation 3 or a verified email address.

“This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry," said exec. deputy president of the Sony Corporation Kaz Hirai in a statement. "These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks."

Starting this week, some PSN services will come back online. The company has prioritized certain services over others, obviously, and the rollout will happen region-by-region. The list is as follows:

  • == TEASER ==Restoration of online game-play across the PlayStation 3 and PSP systems (this includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games)
  • Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
  • Access to account management and password reset
  • Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
  • PlayStation Home
  • Friends List
  • Chat Functionality

Before you can access any of those, there will be a firmware update requiring a PSN password change. Throughout the PSN blackout, users were unable to reset their password or even request to know what their password was. Without that information, it was difficult to determine what risk users were at. Many Internet users had changed all of their password after a recent Gawker hacking, including yours truly.

Sony has also been promising compensation to their customers, the first details of which are now available. We now know it will be part of a larger "Welcome Back" campaign that will see the entire PSN userbase gaining access to PlayStation Plus for 30 days. Existing members, however, will simply receive an additional free month of access. Additional content will be offered for free, but as those will be region-specific, details are not yet available. Cue the bitching over whatever free games are offered!

Existing Qriocity users will also receive an additional 30 days of service. But, uh, who uses Qriocity?

We should know more about when each service element is coming back online soon.

You are absolutely pathetic. Simply because I don't appreciate being called a homophobe that must mean all my friends are homophobes and so am I.

Grow up.

I vote for the latter. It almost put Valve out of business. Imagine a world without Portal 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 2. o_O

"
*/facepalmWho gives a damn about putting one company out of business no matter how badass they are?The scale of this attack is being compared to the TJX information theft back in the middle of last decade. Some 22 million consumers were affected, IIRC. And had their information stolen and sold. At least we don't know if that's happened yet.Or I may have just fallen for a trolling attempt. Whatever. "
I was being slightly facetious, but I should have emphasized the context of what affected the industry the most, not us as gamers. Sony ain't going out of business anytime soon. They're brand loyalty certainly took a huge hit, but Valve almost bit the bullet.

As for the PSN attack: Sony has stated that passwords were hashed(not encrypted though), credit card information should be secure as it was located on an entirely different database, and as long as you don't do anything stupid with spam emails that will no doubt be sent to the email you had linked to your PSN account, you should be okay. They will pay for credit card replacements and whatnot though. That's not a bad deal.

This year's E3. I'm feeling it. I mean.... they have to show something! "
Oh, i am sure they will announce a game with a '3' in the title, and that game will be..................

Left for Dead 3
"
You know, I would be more happy for a L4D3 announcement than HL3.  I've never been a big Half-Life fan :P "

I kid. To each their own I guess. I personally think Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is one of the best games ever made.

@CL60: That isn't what I was saying at all. You made a snide remark at 'Sony Fanboys' I made a snide remark back about 'Immature homophobes." I didn't take the Sony fanboy remark personally even though you have called me a "Sony fanboy" but you took the homophobe remark very personally. At that point you asked me what yous aid was homophobic, I said the comment wasn't just about you, you ignored this and asked again what was homophoic. I told you that other people, yes more than one, had used homophobic speech while also 'Sony Fanboy" bashing. You said it was just 1 guy, like that makes it ok, and I asked you why it bothered you to be lumped in with homophobic people. You suggested I should 'grow up and 'stop being condescending." Which I loved by the way because it was the most condecending way to tell someone not to be condescending I had ever read.
If you're worried people might think you are a homophobe well then I am sorry, stop identifying with homophobic people.

Stop identifying with homophobic people? What the HELL are you fucking talking about.. and I'm not the one that was being condescending, you're just being a condescending prick for absolutely no reason. Calling everybody homophobes if they dare call anybody a Sony fanboy. You started all of this for literally absolutely no reason other than to be an ass.

@CL60: Cl60 when I mention homophobic people I wasn't specifically talking about only you. DO I think you are homophobic no not really. Where there homorphopic comments slung around this past week about 'fanboys' and Sony Corp's non-existent genitalia. Yes. Not every comment about one of your posts has to be only about you. This one wasn't. Relax, keep calm and carry on.

Moving takes some time. I knew they'd spend the time fixing the service rather than just putting it back up but this helps a lot.

My major worry is that they might lock PSNIDs to a PS3, which will not bode well with me, as I gotta make do switching between my friends' PS3s until I get my own. which means, I might get screwed over trying to go online.

Here's hoping they just credit everyone's PSN account with $20-$30 and let us buy what we want. I know it will never happen, but a guy can dream.

Finally Sony comes out with confirmation that the passwords were hashed. With any luck they're therefore highly resistant to mass-breaking and so I wouldn't expect mass-intrusions into email/facebook/etc based on this data.

I think smug people who preached PSN's superiority over XBL are kinda taking a day to evaluate their arguments.... I saw this train coming for years, PSN's security protection was horrificly low. Regardless this is, much like the "cloud fall" an act that anonymous is taking credit for, so how bout this, if these morons want to take credit for taking out things that make us happy so bad, we have the feds ban them from the net permanently?

The real question about password security is going to be whether they were sufficiently salted. It'd be nice to hear something more specific about how securely the passwords were stored. All this non-information just leads me to think they might not have been stored so securely.

It seems as though Sony Online Entertainment's portal at  http://www.station.com has also now been taken offline. The site is currently displaying the following outage message:

"We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."

Really? A month of PSN+?? That's it??

Don't the "free" games become inaccessible when your subscription expires anyway? How exactly does that count as "free stuff" as a reward for threatening millions with identity theft?

"Most people underestimate the great Xbox Live outage of a couple years back that got us that copy of crappy Undertow....I had no or minimal connectivity to Live for almost three weeks. Getting a copy of Undertow and some time on my Live subscription did most certainly not make up for missing one of the busiest gaming periods of the year with my friends....
            "

And most people exaggerate that "outage". The issues started on the 25th because of a huge influx of new users. All issues were cleared up around January 4th, a week and a half later. There was no outage for 3 weeks. Live wasn't completely down, others like me had zero problems, others couldn't sign on while others could sign on but had slowness. And the whole world wasn't effected either, it varied region by region. But good thing that was 3.5 years ago and hasn't happened since.

Personally, I would rather a service have some connectivity issues for less then 2 weeks then a service being completely down for over 2 weeks AND my private data being stolen. I would gladly trade the latter for the former. And Sony is saying full services will be back "within this month" so potentially we could be looking at 3-4 weeks total for full services to be back.

For me, a free month of PSN+ and a download or two does not make up for losing my private data.

Motorstorm Apocalypse just might have the worst timing off any game in recent memory.  First, the tragedies in Japan put the game on ice and now when it comes out tomorrow, the PSN still might be down.
