Sony Responds to Criticisms of PlayStation Network's 'Welcome Back' Lineup

If you already own all the PS3 and PSP games on the list, you might be a little peeved.

After promising to earn back some goodwill with the community through a little thing called "free stuff," Sony yesterday detailed its "Welcome Back" plan for the return of PlayStation Network. There are some terrific games being made available at no charge, but if you already own all of them, that's a bummer.

The head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's communications division, Nick Caplin, actually responded to a fan who expressed their disappointment over this very issue on the PlayStation Blog.

"I’m really sorry tha [sic] there is nothing there that you want," explained Caplin. "We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD [Blu-ray disc] games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84%, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone."

If you've already forgotten what games are in the "Welcome Back" package, I've got you covered.

I think the main problem with this is that they're just giving us stuff that, if you wanted, you most likely bought by now, and if you never got it, it doesn't mean much to you. And this is supposed to make up for having personal information stolen. Not to mention you can tell the reason they picked some of those games was just to drum up sales for sequels (InFamous 2 and LBP2). I didn't want or ask for free stuff, and hey, I'm sure I'll enjoy playing InFamous, since I was casually interested but never enough to get it myself. But the way they're handling it just kind of feels like a man in a suit tried to think of the cheapest way to get everybody to like them again.

as opposed to what? Giving players games they either already have or that are cheap to come by anyway? In the end they're still giving stuff away for free so whether it was wallet cash or a free game, they're still not getting those sales

Just give me that awesome cardboard box hat in the picture and I'd be happy!

But as for the free titles, I'll probably never play them anyways...

INSANE that the people who had all these get nothing.

INSANE that a few old games makes up for leaking personal information and CC info.

Should have offered a voucher of some online money equivalent to the current value of games available so people can choose to spend on what they want on PSN. But no, that is just too sensible for Sony.

Cool. I don't own Wipeout or Stardust, so I'm happy. Maybe they should just give credit, but come on people, who else is handing out free games?

If Sony gave everyone say $20 and they went and spent that on a game not published by Sony than Sony would have to pay that company. 77 million users x $20 = $1.54 billion. They are giving away first party games because they are neither making a profit or losing money, well except that they are losing potential sales, but it's not costing them. I understand you might not like the games offered or you have all of them, which is terrible and I do feel sorry for you, but expecting them to hand out money is crazy.

I am one of those that has most but not all of those 5 free games. Dead Nation is what I don't have because I never wanted it in the first place. I have inFamous, LBP, Ratchet & Clank QFB and WipEout HD so I am kinda out of luck.

Maybe a pick 2 games or pick to have some money put in your wallet scheme would have worked a treat for those who own those games already.

As already mentioned, a vast number of you own multiple accounts and would completely rape the store of all profit.

Definitely agree, especially considering people have multiple PSN accounts and would get credit in all of them. It's impossible for Sony to give away credit.

I don't think he even had to do that much. I'm sure for 90% of the population, this offering will be just fine. They did what they could to offer actual valuable games that people would want to play, but that still won't work for everyone. I don't own InFamous (though I already borrowed it off a friend and played it to completion twice) or Dead Nation (which is apparently meh), but I guess that's what I'll be taking, cause I have the rest of them. And hey guess what? That's still 2 free games for me.

Yeah I know right, we all should put up and shut up as our credit details are SONY's property and every hacker's property as well. So therefore we should'nt get a choice of of games we want over very high risk possible loss of complete life savings, but hey that dosn't matter when we get a couple of old free games.

Also there is still no proof that the hackers got credit info other than those on the SOE games....Even if they do, all you have to do is get a new card with a new number....most banks allow you to do that online without even setting foot into a bank.

Seems gamers are misdirecting their anger here as it seems the hackers are more to blame than Sony is.  It just seems as if there's nothing Sony can do to win short of letting gamers have full access into some sort of Sony money bin.

Iam one of the people that owns every game except for the DLC for Wipeout. I find it hard to believe that they could not pick a collection of games that not everyone owns. I want to state that I fully appreciate what they are doing but sadly for me I am not getting a lot from this promotion.

There are legitimate complaints that can be made about that selection.  How hard would it be for Sony to toss in a few more first party titles?  Maybe offer a discount on a newer first party title.  People still only get to pick two, but if you offer a few more games it is less likely that people already have all of them.

So. Who's most likely to own all those games? People who we're actually the most affected by the outage. The hardcore sony fans.

Honestly, this package is great for me. I don't own 3 of those games, but I wasn't even affected a little bit by the outage as I mostly play on my Xbox anyways.

Sucks for the loyal customers.

Well everyone is getting a free month of PS+ and that has discounts of games from time to time. Maybe they will have some discounts on stuff like Modnation Racers when the store comes up? I dunno I'm just guessing.

INSANE peoples' sense of entitlement...

I previously owned infamous and LBP but traded those in a while ago.
Now that Infamous 2 is coming out, I'm probably getting Infamous to get hype for Infamous 2.

I've had no problem with my bank account, no weird transactions or anything.
I think Sony has done more than enough. 2 free games, that's more than I expected

Don't forget that these free games are meant as compensation, if people aren't happy with what they're providing, I don't see why they shouldn't complain.  It's Sony that screwed up, remember?

Now,  I'm not completely unhappy with the list, I think the PSP offerings are pretty good..  But the PS3 choices weren't exactly the best, they're all extremely old games - even if you don't own them, things like LBP and inFamous can be picked up for very cheap.  People would have complained either way, but I think their selection could have been a little better.

Siren: Blood Curse
Joe Danger
Shatter
God of War 1 & 2 HD
Pixel Junk Shooter
MAG
Warhawk
ModNation Racers PS3

Add those titles to the PS3 list and I think you'd cover everyone. First-party/exclusive titles that Sony won't lose money on, all old(ish) games, some of which (Warhawk, MAG) could probably do with a nice boost of new players online (who would probably be graped in the mouth five seconds in).

I don't feel thanked for my patience. I feel barely recognized for my patience, which in turn gives me less patience than I had before when they needed my patience.

But it's honestly not a big deal. I'm glad I will be able to go online again, and for those who don't have the games on the list are a) way late to the party and b) in for a treat. Hopefully, if nothing else, this helps boost interest for Infamous 2.

Sony's offering to cover any losses you might entail from this situation, so that's not even the issue and if that's your only problem, you're more than covered. Stop trying to make that an excuse for your bitchy crying about not getting the free games you wanted. You sound ridiculous, leech.

The man is right. The games on that list are all amazing, which is why I bought all of them when they came out.
What they should have done is offer a larger selection of games and/or more recent titles. It certainly feels like a kick in the nuts to people like me who already own everything on that list... For example I wouldn't mind Warhawk and it's expansions (to prepare for the sequel) or even something like MAG.

Actually if Sony offered free versions of games with sequels coming up, it'd probably be decent marketing for those sequels.  (provided that the first games were good of course.)  I'm sure Infamous 2 sales is gonna get a boost now that every single PS3 owner has the ability to get a free copy for the first game.

I think a wider selection would have made redundancy less of a problem.  But I am 100% fine with getting LBP and Pursuit Force for my PSP since I hear they are good and never planned on  buying them.  I'll probably get Wipeout and Dead Nation just to have some different MP games to play with my brother!

 @MordeaniisChaos:
The reason these are the games they picked is because they're all SCEA games. In other words they don't cost Sony much to give away. They can't very well give you a credit for the store because you might buy a Third Party game which would cost Sony a ton of money.
