The Community Spotlight 2022.07.23

Consuming this content may turn your tongue bright blue.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am honored to be your host this week as we look back at the best creative endeavors from the community! Hopefully all of you have a competitive spirit because the big news this week relates to an upcoming friendly competition the Giant Bomb community will be having with the MinnMax community. On Monday, July 25th at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PST, MinnMax will be hosting a video game trivia competition. If you have interest in joining you can either subscribe to MinnMax's Patreon to join their Discord OR you can join Giant Bomb's Discord and find the referral link in the "News" section. If Giant Bomb wins, then Dan gets to pick a game under ten hours to force the host of MinnMax to play to completion.

As many of you may recall, Jess was away on vacation following the Bombcast, but if you miss her already, consider checking out the episode of the Super GG Radio podcast she guested on recently. If you were wondering, the Super GG Radio program is a gaming podcast produced by NPR Illinois.

Finally, some of you may have experienced issues with saving profile setting earlier this week. The good news is that the problem should be solved, but if you continue experiencing this issue, please notify panicswitch in the bug report thread. Speaking of bug news, some people in the public beta of iOS 16 on iPad are experiencing issues with the Bomb Cyclone, a Giant Bomb video app for iPhone and iPad! The problem is an OS issue without a clear workaround. With all of that in mind, let's jump into the Spotlight!

Shin Dan & Dan and Mike Mahardy as Beavis and Butt-Head (By: @jearum)

It goes without saying that Dan has no shame and is happy to discuss all of his bodily function in public as well as live on-air. For whatever reason, Dan's toilet habits have become a frequent talking point during the Voicemail Dump Truck. As such, jearum took that and ran with it in the form of two wonderful works of art.

Mento certainly had a productive week.
Mento certainly had a productive week.

Mento has a new episode of their "Indie Game of the Week" feature on the site and this one is all about Eldest Souls! Read why they think it is a game designed for those that completed Dark Souls a dozen times over, but not for them. Likewise, Mento continues their journey into the world of video game-based animes and OVAs and vice-versa with a look at Ghost Sweeper Mikami and 1993's GS Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body! How well does the humor of this poltergeist comedy hold up? Finally, they wrote a review and deeper dive into La-Mulana 2, its mechanics, lore, and oddly immersive world. If you dismissed it as a simple sequel to the first game, give this a read!

As a kid, bigsocrates remembers the gory visuals of 1993's Night Slashers creeping them out. So, they decided to return to the game and see if its visuals and gameplay have held up.

How important are the laws of physics to a video game? And I'm not just talking about a good physics engine with that question! Continuing with their deep looks at Outer Wilds, moderator Gamer_152 looks at how the game represents blackholes and quantum mechanics from a purely scientific lens.

I guess you could say it is about time Darkstalkers gets some love from Capcom.
I guess you could say it is about time Darkstalkers gets some love from Capcom.
  • @doomocrat's Rogue Legacy 2 review extensively examines the game's mechanics and argues why they think its difficulty curve is close to "perfection."
  • @retrogimp's Capcom Fighting Collection review discusses why they think it feels more like a tribute to the Darkstalkers franchise than a celebration of 35 years of Street Fighter, but why that's not that big of a problem.

S'more

It has been a while since I last did this, but this week's Wiki Page of the Week is a call for help. Giant Bomb's wiki object page for S'mores only has two games, and the page could do with a nice deck explaining what the food item has done to players in games in the past.

Wiki Page Of The Week Recommendations

If you can think of any wiki pages that are "worthy" of showcasing, send them to me however you can. Also, remember, self-promotion is ENCOURAGED! Also, if you can think of pages that need help, feel free to suggest those as well!
