The Simpsons Arcade Game Is Coming to XBLA/PSN Alarmingly Soon

"'Tis a fine enough beat-'em-up, but sure 'tis no classic, English."

Rumors have been kicking around about an XBLA/PSN release of Konami's sort of classic The Simpsons Arcade Game for a while now. Initially we all dismissed them given that EA most recently held The Simpsons license, and maybe wouldn't necessarily be so into that kind of thing, but the rumor persisted, and became more and more realistic. Once achievements started popping up, the rumor was all but sealed as truth.

Finally, a whole new generation can be introduced to the barely tolerable concept of Bartman.
Finally, a whole new generation can be introduced to the barely tolerable concept of Bartman.

Now Konami has finally gotten around to outright confirming the game's release, acknowledging that players will be able to download the arcade classic in the immediate future. How immediate? How about the day after tomorrow (February 3) for Xbox Live Arcade downloaders, and this coming Tuesday for PSN users?

Yes, Microsoft does have a bit of exclusivity on this one, but the bonus for PSN players is that if you happen to be a PlayStation Plus member, you'll get the game for free. Everyone else will have to pay $9.99, or 800 Microsoft Point Dollars.

For the uninitiated, The Simpsons Arcade Game was an early '90s beat-'em-up featuring up to four players taking on the roles of Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa as they tracked down the dastardly Smithers, who kidnapped Maggie for some reason. I think it involved a diamond of some kind. Anyway, the point is that you beat your way through the game's various levels, knocking around various grunts in suits, other grunts in suits that also had hammers for some reason, and the occasional bear. It was also really short and deeply repetitive, and existed more as an extension of the Simpsons merchandising blitz of the early '90s than anything else. It was still way better than Bart vs. The Space Mutants, at least.

Like most other four-player arcade games that have come to consoles as downloads, this port will feature online play. It also comes with a few pieces of extra content, including a Japanese version of the game that features some different scoring mechanics.

And also like most other four-player arcade games that have come to consoles as downloads, this port will undoubtedly seem like a really awesome idea until you and your friends beat it in less than an hour, and then immediately forget about it like those digital copies of X-Men Arcade, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, and Final Fight you still have on your hard drive, yet haven't touched since the week you bought them.

Look, I'm not judging you. I'm just saying, if there were such a thing as digital dust, downloadable ports of arcade beat-'em-ups would be the second best of all digital dust collectors, behind only all those Game Room games you remember only with scorn and disappointment. It's okay. You're not alone. We've all been there.

Turtles in Time showed me just how much nostalgia is talking when I demand an XBLA release for all those classic Beat-em-ups. Played it for a couple of hours and was over it ... OVER IT.

I don't think people realize how not fun this game is going to be. Especially if they give you infinite lives.

I think after playing the latest Simpson's game that has some great parody moments in it that I'll just stick with that over the arcade game, good to know they are putting it out in other formats for other people to play it.

And with this, our holy trinity of X-Men Arcade, TMNT, and The Simpsons is complete.

I wish you people would get over yourselves

And I wish people shitting on perfectly servicable & fun beat-em-up games would get over themselves.

From the article:

"...this port will undoubtedly seem like a really awesome idea until you and your friends beat it in less than an hour, and then immediately forget about it like those digital copies ofX-Men Arcade,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, andFinal Fightyou still have on your hard drive, yet haven't touched since the week you bought them."

So what? If I haven't touched them since the week I bought them it's because I got as many achievements as possible (or as many as I wanted to) on them, and got enough play out of them at the time. I also haven't gone back and played Mass Effect, Saints Row, or Halo ODST since the "new-ness" wore off. The Simpsons is 10 bucks, like X-Men. which I easily got 10 bucks worth of play out of, and the TMNT Arcade game is only 5 bucks.

Quit reaching so hard to find reasons to bash these older games.

I feel like people are thinking about this too much.

Like any other <$10 game, you buy it for a few hours of fun then move on.

I don't think that's much of a reach. The general consensus I hear when people talk about beat 'em ups is that they were amazing in the arcade and significantly less amazing on home consoles. Alex writes snarky articles. He always has. I enjoy the tone; some people don't. No need to justify it by making up reasons like "he's reaching."

This is about four years past me caring. This would have been great when XBLA was young and we hadnt realized classic beat-em-ups aren't fun at all anymore.

$10 for an hour of two of nostalgia fueled entertainment sounds good to me, even if the game collects digital dust after the fact. Money better spent than a movie ticket, if you ask me.

You want to tell me looking back at this old school beat-em up will be disappointing, I will say I don't give a shit. I'm not buying it expecting 12 hr of brand new stuff. I just want to see the game again through my modern day eyes. No harm in that. Although I will say I am writing this while wearing a Simspons shirt so I may be a bit bias....

Also, no matter how "bad" you may think this will be when you look at it again, it will still be 1000x better than Simpsons Wrestling. That was barely even a game.

I love the old beat-em-ups and definitely felt like I got my money's worth from X-Men and Turtles (even if Reshelled was a fairly poor re-envisioning) but Simpsons wasn't even that good when it was new. The fact that it was Simpsons related was the only thing it had going for it. Pretty ugly and aged even worse. I may pick it up just for the fact that I love brawlers in general but I may wait for a sale on this one.

I think you can justify an opinion about a game that came out 20 years ago. This isn't a new game or an HD remake and the devs have been pretty transparent about what is being included in the package as far as modes go. Its hard not to agree with Alex on this one. For the experience at hand, I would be hard pressed to pay anymore than 400msp.

If this is too much opinion for you, there are places you can go to just read the press releases that come out.

I agree with the author, though maybe he should have made a separate article to illustrate his point. Ports of old games are weak and this game wasn't even that good at the time. It was fun, because it was Simpsons but people expect more from games nowadays and these things are best left in the past. If they wanted to make a new Simpsons sidescroller, wiith modernised gameplay and graphics, then great, but yeah, people who pay 10 bucks for this are suckers. You can play it via emulation right now and get it out of your system. BUY ORIGINAL XBLA/PSN GAMES!

The fact that this has been announced and put out in such a short time is awesome. I loved this in the arcade so hard. Hope some of the magic won't be lost with the lack of joy stick and big cab buttons.

Not to be a dick but It's been known about for a while (http://www.co-optimus.com/article/7224/the-simpsons-arcade-coming-home-at-long-last.html - article from early November).

Ever notice how when someone says "not to be a dick" they wind up sounding like a dick? Dang.

While Alex is completely right about this, at the very least with my experience, Xmen Arcade was only $5 / 400 points and I bought into Final Fight for $10 / 800 points when it was paired up with Magic Sword, so there price value there. $10 for this Simpsons game is over-priced, it should have been priced at $5 instead.

Screw you Alex, I loved Bart vs The Space Mutants.

That game was fucking awful. I knew it was bad even when I played it when I was 8 or 9 years old, when I had no real discerning taste. It was that terrible.

I said I loved it, I didn't say it was good. At age 5 or 6 I don't think I got past the second level, but I played those 2 levels over and over again.

Maybe those empty promises still can be fullfilled, Gameroom is still included with the latest version of the Dashboard update. Just maybe Microsoft will come up with something.

@Nugget: The Game Room developer went under. I'd be surprised if anyone tries to take over that train wreck, especially since most of the games that were being clamoured for are being released as XBLA/PSN titles singularly (and, thereby, with a larger profit margin).

Oh... Yeah now that you mention it i remember reading about it. Still i have had lots of fun with Gameroom. But if they keep pumping out retro titles on XBLA, such as The Simpsons Arcade and more i wont complain.=)
