Uncharted: Golden Abyss & NGP Hands-On

We peer into Uncharted's Golden Abyss.

No Caption Provided

With all of these unconfirmed "PlayStation Vita" reports swirling around, I'm not even sure what to call this thing. I mean, that's probably going to be the name, right? But let's just play it safe for now, because back when I actually played with an NGP and around nine different games, we were all still calling it the NGP.

It's an interesting device that straight-up looks expensive. Like the PSP before it, it's got a stunning screen on it, and it's capable of some pretty fantastic-looking graphics. The controls feel like the way you'd expect a PlayStation product to feel, with a nice D-pad and a couple of analog sticks. Of course, it's also ready for touching and tilting, with Sixaxis-style motion sensing, a touch-ready screen, and weird touch-sensitive rear panel. About the only thing that keeps it from totally matching the current PlayStation controller is that it only has one set of shoulder buttons, something that some games mitigate by placing virtual buttons on the sides of the touch screen, where it's easy for your thumb to reach out and tap them. It's seems like a solid platform.

It also looks like Sony's readying a good and varied collection of software for the NGP, covering a few standards, some new games from franchises you already care about, and some left-field stuff, as well. Though it didn't do much to sway me from the thought that I'd rather be playing all this stuff on a television, the NGP is pretty cool.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is clearly the star of the show. Sony Bend is working on this one, and their presentation tossed out a few numbers, like their ability to put 160MB of textures on screen or the notion that Drake has 3,000 separate animations. That aside, the game looked good--not quite console-quality, if you were to hold it up against Uncharted 2, but close enough that it practically doesn't matter. The game appears to be a standalone adventure set before the first game, but that doesn't mean that it's a prequel that's designed to lead into the core series.

The game controls roughly like you'd expect, but it brings in a lot of the NGP's additional controls as mostly optional additions. When you get into a scrap with an enemy, you can go into a touch melee mode, allowing you to tap enemies to attack or fight by tapping icons that appear on-screen. Climbing can be done by touching the next ledge in a sequence to hop there, or you can just swipe up along a series of ledges and Drake will quickly make his way to your end point. This initially seemed like some kind of awful auto-pilot, but after thinking about it a bit, I realized that those Uncharted climbing sequences are always completely obvious and never difficult, which calmed me down right away. The ledges quickly flash as you swipe over them, giving you a visual indicator to let you know that you're getting ready to move. Tilt controls also come into play when climbing, as you can lean the NGP away from surfaces to get Drake ready for a jump from one wall to another.

Other NGP-specific controls include the ability to tap enemies while hanging from a ledge to grab and yank them over. There's also a sniper sequence in the demo we were shown that lets you tilt the device to aim. It's worth noting that this stuff is optional, for the most part. If you want Golden Abyss to play like a regular Uncharted game, it will.

Oh, and yes. Nolan North will return to voice Drake. I probably should have started with that, huh?

@beeftothetaco: Actually the battery life will be pretty good. Xperia Play is more than twice as powerful as the 3DS, and it also has better battery life. It'll probably have a huge battery

as one of the seemingly few people who really enjoys their PSP, i'm incredibly excited about this platform and game.
Word. That system gets so much hate, but ends up being crazy useful for watching maybe-not-totally-legal copies of the Daily Show, South Park, and so on on the bus, and playing actually full-ass games at home or on my way to and from work. People can hate on it if it's not their thing, but for those of us that actually used it for everything it was worth, the system was amazing for quite a while.

This is one thing I am curious about, too.  Now, I don't really take my DS Lite out and about much either so a short life wouldn't change my gaming habits much, but on the same token, I'd like to know that it can last at least 1 cross-country flight.

Considering I just spent 1100 on a 3DTV to mostly play Uncharted 3 in all its stereoscopic glory I'm probably not the best person to tackle the question of "What are you willing to spend to play a game?" but I will say that Golden Abyss appears to be justifying my inevitable purchase of an NGP.

I bought a PSP on day one also and I was happy enough with that purchase to upgrade to a PSP-3000 a few years later. Sure its not the greatest system ever made but its served me pretty well over the years. The initial problem with the PSP was the bevy of PS2 ports but as the system went on that wasn't so much of a problem; lack of games due to the most rampant piracy I have ever seen was the problem. That and most developers don't understand how to develop for one analog input anymore.

I feel that with Portable systems they give the ability to adjust consumer expectations so that developers are not always beholden to try and develop something to compete with current generation AAA console titles. I am a tad worried though that with the power of the NGP there is going to be the need to spend the same kind of budget on an exclusive NGP title as there would be on a big multi-platform release. In which case Sony will be the only ones willing to do that, but I think Sony is going to push hard and I'm willing to take that ride while it lasts.

I hope the battery is doing at least 5 hours of play with 24 in standby. I want an NGP.

Sony Bend? Does this mean Naughty Dog plans to continue the trend of making the first three then handing the franchise off to move onto the next one?

Obvious or not, there is a decidedly less tactile sense of interaction if you can tell Nate Drake to auto-climb a cliff face rather than specifically telling him to grab each individual handhold.

See Nintendo... how hard is it to show off a game that people instantly has people excited about the system and the game.  All that is missing is a Twisted Metal title and and good ol RPG.  Hell, I hope we get ports of older PS3 games that might be possible on it... like say Oblivion?

Damn it!  I could have resisted just about any game in the world, but this Uncharted business is going to make me buy an NGP.  No question about it anymore.  I can't miss out on Drake.  It better be on par quality wise with what Naughty Dog has done.  I sure hope they're involved in the writing.

The more I think about it, the more the Uncharted touch controls actually sound kind of cool. Of course, I'm not dropping hundreds of dollars on a new handheld anytime soon, but... it sounds cool.

I wanted to get a PSP last year until I realized there weren't really any games I wanted for it, especially now that the God of War PSP games are coming to PS3, but I've been itching to buy a handheld, for reasons unknown. Hopefully the NGP isn't too expensive, and has a decent battery life, so I can pick one up. If the price is too high, I'll easily pass on it for a year or so though.

I wish it had an HDMI port right on it so I could just sit down and play it on TV. I don't understand why they don't also sell the games to work with the PS3? Because if they did, no one would buy an NGP?

I'm more interested in the Vita after the press conference, but not 100% sold.  I wonder if thhis will be ported to PS3 as every first party PSP game has been ported to the PS2.
